I bought my first handgun a couple months ago, a Ruger .357. Great gun. I picked it because I hang out in the woods a lot, and I wanted something that could take on black bears, feral hogs, and
skinwalkers.

My priorities have changed since then. Due to a personal issue that requires an increased level of personal security, I've been carrying more. I want to get small automatic so I can carry it more easily. I'm a poorfag though, so I'll have to part with my revolver first.

My question is: does .45 offer enough of an increase in performance against larger animals to justify the reduced magazine capacity compared to 9mm?

I don't mean to start a caliber war, but I want to hear other people's thoughts on it.

10mm

They both suck.

No, but neither is ideal for aggressive four-legged animals.
>>
10mm, .357 Magnum, or some flavor of .44
>>
>>34903302
Love both, own both. Depends on where you live and your "personal issue" that requires carrying.

>walk on two legs and run as a pack?
9mm extendos

>single nomadic bipedal critter or lone wildlife encounter
45 Fudd Fix

I wouldn't worry about it.

Subtle, very subtle

9mm is just as good as .45 ACP given the right loading. Both are fine against humans but against lions, tigers, and bears oh my you'll want at LEAST 10mm in an auto and .357 Magnum in a revolver. Preferably longer barrels as well.

I might be a 6, date a 7, but God made man equal when he gave us the 10.

OP here. Basically, I'm getting a carry piece to protect against some watermelon Americans in the city, but I'll also be carrying it in the woods sometimes so I'm trying to figure out which is the least shitty for animals.
>>
>>34903631
Just drawing should resolve most random encounters. If not hope you have a few potions and full hitpoints.
>>
>>34903631
Everything is subjective. Tell us what platforms your using/considering for both calibers.
>>
>>34903302
.45ACP is more powerful than 9mm up close and personal.

>>34903631
Get 2 different guns

.45 FMJ does a pretty good job on bears, almost 100% penetration

10mm glocks are pretty cheap

See ammo prices, why most people buy online or reload.

which sucks more a bear raping you with it's mouth or spending a $1.25 per round?
>>
>>34904097
I don't practice getting raped by a bear but now that you mention it...
>>
>>34903302
One word of advice. NEVER part with your first handgun.
>>
>>34903361
This. Next purchase gonna be a G40 for innawoods.
I don't know enough about 45 to give a good answer.
>>
How about 357 Sig? Seems like it would give reliable feeding and good penetration without as much recoil and expense as 10mm.
>>
>>34903302
If you're limiting yourself to a handgun round you're best off with whatever overs the best capacity since performance is similar.

9mm with FMJ and a hot loading will offer the best penetration versus 45.

Get a glock 17L with 33 round stick mags.
>>
>>34903568
Glock 17 or 19. 18+1 is a generous capacity. The 17 shoots a little softer with a little more velocity and sight radius but 19 is comfy and can use 15 round mags.
>>
>>34904717
124 or 147 gr fmj?
>>
>>34904753
15 + 1 of 10mm is comfort for all seasons. Get your G17/19 weaksauce the fuck out of my face.
>>
>>34905169
Heavier rounds will penetrate deeper.

>>34905304
Firearms technology has come a long way we've killed with much less. Penetration will be king with a pistol round.

OP is better off going with 9mm for higher capacity and ease of shooting. He'll be able to afford to train more, meaning he'll be more effective with the weapon which is more important since if you can't shoot well any caliber is near useless.

>OP is better off going with 9mm for higher capacity and ease of shooting.
I normally agree with this argument, but not for a woods gun. 9mm is severely underpowered for bears and other things larger than humans. A Glock 20 is in the same price range and offers twice the muzzle energy in a heavier bullet. And if he can't handle full power loads, he can always go with FBI loads and still have a 50% edge over 9mm with not that much more recoil.
>>
>>34905542
Then might as well get 230 grain 45.
>>
>>34905685
Then might as well throw a quarter pound rock.

Anyone own a Sig P227?
>>
Which is more effective against spoops?
>>
>>34903361
if you're moving away from wheel guns with their fat fuck bores and swinging magnum dicks, you got the 10mm loaded hot and in hard cast lead.
Hell, you can even swap in a heavier recoil spring in the g20/40 if the hotter loads knock the gun around.
>>
>>34905542
a 10mm is NOT that stupid snappy out of a g20. Train with a 9mm until you iron out the bugs and establish fundamentals, then sink some cash into 10mm. It'd be ultra stupid to go 10mm from the get go, unless you got tons of cash, time, and willpower.
>>
Don't sell your first gun
