They were volunteer militias that fought for Bulgarian independence against Kebab. They were especially notable for the defense of Shipka Pass.

A few later battles happened at Shipka Pass, but the biggest ones were what I talked about. Eventually the Russians took Plevna, freeing up their troops, allowing them to head farther south and remove more Kebab.

Would the peshmergan involvement during Iraq be considered along these lines? I know they're just a group of people, but from what dad said about them, they seemed to be pretty badass.

Fucking merc air forces man, wish we had a lot more private units like that who could go full Ace Combat/Crimson Skies and dominate their personal fiefdoms with the latest in futuristic war machines and aircraft.

32 Battalion of the SADF in the Border War during the 70's and '80s.

And then later, once 61 Mech came in and annihilated the one isolated brigade:

>evade detection and destruction despite an enemy airfield with 20+ fighters literally minutes flying time away and several divisions in the area
>get close enough to bombard Menongue itself at one point
>run all the way back to border without being detected or suffering any loss
