i was never on a sub but there are positive and negs.
Closer tight knit community, cool so to speak. Faster advancement and better bonuses for some rates.
Cons are shittier port calls usually. No sun light, fucked up air and hot racking.
IMO not worth it unless you have a huge boner for subs.

You need to follow a tried and true routine.
Running:
Couch to 5k
Couch to 10k
Half marathon training program from runners worls perhaps or similar site dedicated to running
Strength:
Beginner PL programs: SS or SL with some accessories
Than choose an intermediate PL program
Flexibility and Mobility training as well.
It really is that simple you just gotta do it.

So, being a poor fag buried in debt, I recommend my son go into the air Force. He finished Gate, and had his AA done by the time he graduated high school. He's about to start college to finish a bachelor's in astrophysics and has enrolled in ROTC for the air Force. He hopes to work in the space science division.

Did I screw my son by suggesting this path to him? He seems excited and is seriously considering career but I worry his talents will be wasted

waht do you do for fun? unless you like writing, intel is probably not a good fit, Intel can get deployed with SPECFOR boots on the ground or get komfy desk job and the likes, but if you go army you can also do psyops and other cool shit. Or you can go to almost any branch and do aviation positions (aerial reconnaissance is still a thing in at least a few branches)

I personally went Coast Guard when I got a score like that, best decision I made, Got to kick doors and chose to get deployed, and hen I went right back to a nice CONUS desk job

no its a console job
On ships they get their own space and monitor enemy coms and signals. On shore they most likely do something similar from an intel command. Its a good job.

If I took anti-depressants for 3 months, but later on felt it was inappropriate/not-needed/a misdiagnosis, would this bar me from becoming an officer in the future? Squatting wouldn't interfere with long distance running then? Also, the main test is off of push ups, pull ups, sit ups, 1.5 Mile Run, and 500m swim
>>
>>34903889
Squatting does not equal destroying your legs so you cannot move for the rest of the week. Thats bro science workouts. Squatting will increase overall leg strength, back and erector strength and core strength. Im not saying become a world record holder but having strong legs is very useful. And just before some idiot says something squats dont give you BB sized legs so dont worry about that either.

PL programs almost always have ou squatting MON WED and FRI. The increase in frequency lets your body adjust to it and soreness mostly goes away. You can lift on those 3 days and run and do mobility work on the other 3 days and rest on sundays.
How bad is your fitness level right now?

Just make sure he signs for the minimum number of years. If he loves it, he can reenlist. If he wants to do better for himself outside the military, he can finish the contract and he'll be set with career opportunities and no student debt. If he's excited about what he's doing, that's better than 80% of college kids by the end of their freshman year.

From my experience here, you don't know whose the quitting type until they quit. Everyone always says "I'll never quit they'll have to kill me" or something to that effect, and they're the ones who voluntarily withdraw. However, most of the candidates who make it past Cole Range are skinny dudes with lean muscle. It's all heart honestly. Some people are just in over their heads. 70 something dudes quit at Cole Range this week.

Different anon here. To add to this, I have a GED and zero college credits, I've had zero issues so far with all the airforce and navy recruiters I've talked to so far, and am about to head to MEPS after Labor Day for airforce. I don't think it's as big of an issue as it used to be, especially with satisfactory ASVAB scores.
>>
>>34905137
Any idea what his score was? I know the Mureeens dont have a minimum req, but the AF/Army are like 60+

I'm really interested in the CG, seems the easiest to meld back into society (jobs) after contracts are up.
>>
>>34905183
To me, as long as your in decent physical shape and have good cardio, you can make it. Most of the guys quit because of trenchfoot. The cadre made them ruck through a knee high stream so their swollen feet got wet and they started to blister bad. The other guys got really severe chafing to the point of bleeding. Other guys quit because tiny hearts. Oh, the heat got some people too. It's 90 degrees almost every day with very high humidity. Heat catting is big here.
>>
>>34905302
So the people who are still there yourself included, did you simply not develop those problems as in the trench foot and chaffing issues or did you just tough through them?

In the navy on ships drinking coffee is a constant thing. Where does that not happen at?
>>

>>
>>34905335
I just got here from airborne. I finished my 5 jumps and arrived earlier this week. I'm watching from the sidelines right now and just observing. I class up in mid September. No idea how I'll avoid the trenchfoot, but some of the quitters have some tips, so I've taken note. It's important you don't linger around or spend too much time with the quitters. It really is contagious and you are who you surround yourself with.
>>
>>34905369
They break you down physically and mentally because they want you to quit. The Regiment isn't joking when they say they want only the most dedicated rangers. It's not the regular army here, they have their own rules. It's a different world here.

Army: more money, better equipment
Marines: better culture, more prestigious (I have no idea where civilians get this mentality from but they think Marines are the fucking warrior elite and that nobody else can compare.)

Personally, I chose the Marines because they're a much smaller branch and that's just the kind of person I am. They don't have the bevy of divisions that the Army has, so Marines rally around the pride of being a Marine first and foremost.
>>
>>34907541
>more prestigious
Let me clarify by saying that they are seen as more prestigious to the GENERAL PUBLIC. Any Marine who isn't motarded will tell you that Soldiers are often times just as capable and squared away. But when you say "I was a Marine" to a civilian job employer vs "I was a Soldier," one has a far more noticeable impact.
>>
Not entirely military, but fairly close. How does one get into the CIA?

I'm thinking about getting a history degree and learning Korean (or similar language) and trying to be a military analyst. What do you guys think?

Apparently to get the real cool jobs you need to be a Green Beret or something.
>>
>>34907558

Helicopters or Fixed Wing, it doesn't particularly matter I just like flight. Slight preference to fixed wing. I'm sitting on a Navy pilot packet until the next board and Marines use the same test so I figured I would ask.

So something I've been curious about.

Everyone I've ever talked to says "DON'T VOLUNTEER FOR ANYTHING" when you're in boot camp. Why specifically is that? Are you almost guaranteed to be doing some stupid shit or something?

Examples would be helpful.
>>
>>34908317

>>

>>
>>34908317

>>

Can I get a specific answer? Sorry to be annoying
>>
>>34907558
>But when you say "I was a Marine" to a civilian job employer vs "I was a Soldier," one has a far more noticeable impact.

If you're falling back on your branch during a civilian job, you're already fucked.

Employers want to know about skills and responsibilities you had in the military. Talking about the color of your uniform is essentially saying "I did absolutely nothing relevant".
>>
>>34908067

WOs are also commissioned officers. The difference is that they're technically focused and do not require a degree.

As already mentioned, the Army has O-type commissioned pilots as well, but they have to balance more leadership duties with flying.
>>
>>34908317

Ultimately it doesn't really matter. Volunteering for stuff will not get you ahead in your career in any way. At best you might have a slightly more interesting couple hours doing some random detail. At worst the detail might be kinda shitty and you'll have to carry something heavy for a couple hours.

It's throwaway advice that people blow up into some big thing because they want to overplan every little thing. Volunteer if you feel like it, don't volunteer if you don't, it's irrelevant.

It's bad for a couple of reasons:

1. You're basically making yourself the go-to boy for ANYTHING a DI needs.
2. You're not blending in. If you cannot remain camouflaged from your DI, how will you stay camouflaged from your enemy?
>>
>>34909323
I have my time spent in listed on my resume (I was stationed at the Pentagon) and job title and they always go wide-eyed when they see it. Believe me, it makes a difference.
>>
>>34910094

Job title matters. Where you worked matters. What uniform you wore while doing it is only going to be relevant if your interviewer is a 22 year old McDonalds manager.

In most of my interviews branch of service doesn't even come up. It's the equivalent of getting brownie points for liking the same sports team as the interviewer. If that's what they're basing their hiring decisions on, it's not an org worth working for anyways.
>>
>>34910108
Oh no, definitely not. I say the exact same thing here as well. Someone who does mechanical work is still getting the fundamental job experience, doesn't matter if it's in the Navy or the Air Force.

8 times out of 10 that it comes out I was in the military, the immediate follow-up is "What branch?" It's like clockwork. This country has a fucking hero complex for military veterans.
>>
>>34908317
The only reason you'd ever want to voulenteer for anything is if you're enlisting as an E-1 going into a branch that can promote up to E-3 for merit out of basic. If your partiuclar rate/MOS whatever guarantees E-3 or higher, or you get it for college credits or some other shit all that volunteering does is make you have to arbitrarily do a bunch of extra shit for no benefit.

Yeah, it's extremely cringy. I'd like to be a Gunner's Mate, but I was talking to some Navy prior service guys and they said I may have to take another job because of my ASVAB score (AFQT 92). Either way, I'm not talking to a recruiter until I can do 40 push-ups in a minute.

You can't guarantee it. You need to do well in A school and even then your class might not even have options for a greenside billet. Source: am in field med right now

They said since I'm kind of at the mercy of the recruiters on this and they might try to force me into a job that needs slots filled but requires a "high" ASVAB.

3. They wake you up at 3:45am, you leave for MEPS at 5:00am, you get done with the physical between 11:00am and 12:00pm. From there it depends what else you need to do.

Short answer: don't lie about it. You will probably need to get a waiver, which will extend the process of enlisting but once you get it done you are set for any future clearance and you don't have to be worried about being dishonorably discharged every time you renew your clearance or reenlist.

myfitnesspal is a great app to help you count calories and keep a food log.

food tracking + eating whole foods and protein + tracking calories (my fitness pal) + working out (free MARSOC program or other) + consistency is 100% of what it takes to hit your goals

i would honestly go talk to a recruiter as well, just be like "hey this is me, this is my goal, and i want to work toward being able to make the cutoff for joining"

most recruiters will work with you and help give you advice and programs and shit

Personally I don't think you should join, because failing your fitness test after fat camp is fucking unexcusable, you are provided a shitload of time to get your shit together.
Secondly, GM has some of the lowest requirements to get into for the Navy and a recruiter can't force you to do shit. Keep in mind that because of the low requirements, a fuckload of people go GM and it's overmanned right now, so there's probably not a slot for you. You also may wait in DEP for a long ass time before shipping out.
Make sure you can pass your PFA by a country mile before you even talk to a recruiter.

It's not a mindset, it's a physical limitation. I obviously eat a little normally, so suddenly eating 50% more felt like I was having a lavish dinner 3 times a day. Or like I was in one of those dumb eating contests where halfway through eating a 9001" deep-dish pizza you realize that maybe it wasn't such a good idea. After ramping it up much more slowly I managed to get to eating 2100-2200 somewhat comfortably, but it was still an effort, also to just prepare this much (good quality) food every day.

Speaking of quality it was really fucking hard to reduce daily calories from fat to 20%, I eliminated pretty much every unnecessary extra source of fat (butter, cheese, switching to 0-fat milk which tastes like shit, etc.) and even then I was still coming out at around 33% more often than not.
>>

It doesnt have to be full GOMAD maybe just drink a full glass with each meal.
>I'm 30+ m8
Then you should be used to cooking, plus its not even hard.

>>34915665
They serve themselves before you, so if your interests align with yours they are your best friend. But vice versa applies.

>>
>>34915715
>Nigger you are desperately trying to gain weight. Overshoot.
What benefit does overshooting fat specifically give you?

>Drinking milk is a dangerous meme?
Drinking a gallon of full milk a day does sound like a dangerous mustard gas-tier meme. If it's just about getting the protein then I can do it in healthier ways, but stir-fried chicken gets fucking tedious after a week.

>It doesnt have to be full GOMAD maybe just drink a full glass with each meal.
For what it's worth, I drink about 500ml of 1% milk a day with my coffee.

>Then you should be used to cooking, plus its not even hard.
I am used to it, just not in such amounts and while trying to preserve both variety and nutrient balance (mainly enough protein). Again, you can only eat stir fried chicken with broc for this long before rage quitting everything.

Good, that sounds in line with most of the advice I've received. Now, when it comes time to actually go to take the ASVAB and go to MEPS, am I able to schedule those two apart or must they be back to back?

I'd like somewhat of a safety net in the event that I bomb the ASVAB (unlikely, as I've heard that it's quite easy and I'm also a great test taker) but if I score below what my job requires, am I capable of backing out before swearing in so that I can have time to find another job that I'm interested in/switch branches altogether?
>>
>>34915847
>You need more calories. Fat is the most calorically dense.
>Again no its jsut more calories.
So wait, are you saying that if I keep eating my skelly-mode 1700 kcal/day and top it up by eating a few spoonfuls of butter then I'll get mega gains?

>Wheres the beef? Pork? Shrimp? Fish?
Yeah there's that too, chicken is just the cleanest of them, save for fish maybe. But anything prepared any other way than stir-fried with minimal oil or baked plain turns out too fatty. So it's either the same few boring dishes with optimal nutrients, doesn't matter what the protein source, or more fancy but less healthy stuff.

What I'm saying is, whenever I try to eat 1.5g/kg protein while trying to reach my 2400 kcal/day goal then it's either fucking tedious and bland, or I actually end up overshooting the kcals due to fat, even if I manage to physically stomach this much of less protein-dense food.

Yes, you can take the ASVAB separately from getting the physical at MEPS. It's just one form to authorize for both and your recruiter should leave the physical section blank while having you sign/initial the test taking part on the bottom half. Also if you don't do as well as you hope on the ASVAB, take the 30 day retest waiting period into account and study the sections that you bombed the first time. Having a second go at the ASVAB with prep time seems preferable to suddenly switching jobs without researching at all, or worse backing out and trying to switch branches. At that point you would effectively have to switch because your recruiter wouldn't answer your emails/calls if you bailed right before swearing in. Just talk to your recruiter and get the ASVAB scheduled well before your "ship date" if you're worried about it. Then if you qualify for what you want, you have time to think about whether you really want to commit before you get your physical and go to basic.
>tl;dr
Yes you can do them separately, yes you can back out before swearing in (would not recommend), yes you can switch jobs and retake the ASVAB before you sign

I'm 23 and American.

At age 19 I got caught with a tiny amount of weed, did the community service, and got it expunged.

I'm currently diagnosed with depression and ADD. I could easily work with my doctor to get off my vyvanse and lexapro medications over time. I honestly don't have ADD and faked it to get the vyvanse that makes my cubicle basement job tolerable and I'm only "depressed" because I'm poor and bored and stuck in my hometown.

I have an A.A degree, been at my current $10/hr office job for 3 years, have a gf of two years who lives with me, and don't come off as some kind of spergy depressed weirdo or anything, just a typical middle class college educated white dude.

ANY chance I could join any branch of the military within a few years?

If not, what should I do with my life? I've been at my best in my life when I played team sports as a kid and in high school with a coach telling me exactly how many pushups and laps to do and pushing me to give more effort and having trammates to be accountable to and go through shit with together. On my own, I never seem to do more than the bare minimum and have been pretty much floating through life since I graduated high school.

I want to move to another corner of the country or to another continent. I'm so fucking bored and tired of never having money for anything I want to do. I need a change, bad. If I even made 30 grand a year I'd feel filthy rich, I hate only having enough money to be able to not live in a shithole, not starve, and keep my beater car running.

I need a change, bad. I need to join something that gives me something productive to do and will allow me to go back to being middle class like how I grew up. I want to live somewhere new, meet new people, expirience new things and feel excitement again.

Only tell them the part about the weed IF IT IS ON YOUR RECORD. If not, dont say shit. The medical shit, you dont need to say shit, no background check actually looks at medical so youre good to go there.

I know guys who got TS clearances with underage drinking and DUIs, so youre good to go on that. You can sign up for any branch.

No diagnosis by a licenses shrink then your ADD doesn't exist. If you're on tricare or something then they'll find out, though. Ask your recruiter and tell him it's been 2 years since you stopped taking it and he'll advise you to most likely not mention it

>>34917116
A diagnosis from a licensed psych is bad news. If you can get it rescinded do it, they will definitely try and weed you out for it. But sounds like you have a lot more problems to deal with, Amigo. I've actually been alot happier lately and my post only highlighted the negative things I was thinking as I'm laying in bed late at night right now pondering existential shit for the first time in a while.

Funny you mention getting outside, in the past year I've really been appreciating going on long walks with my dog in the woods, feeling the sun on my skin, noting and apreciating the sunlight at different times of day and paying close attention to seasonal changes, and noticing what kind of trees, topography, grasses, and flowers are in different areas. I've also really been appreciating that I live in North Florida where the sun is warm and the woods are thick.

i would 100% join active duty if i were you. some of the computer jobs in the airforce translate extremely well to the civilian world when you get out.

i would look into the air force since they have bases everywhere for you to relocate to, a nice variety of interesting jobs, and they deploy.

once you get X amount of deployment time, you will have 100% of your college paid for if you want to go back to school for something.

the /meg/ official response is: if you aren't going for something that leads to TS, you have zero medical history of any kind. you deny any doctor ever has told you something is wrong with you and if MEPS docs see something somehow you say "this is news to me" or something along those lines. for mental history there is no physical evidence, so if you don't tell them you were on pills for 3 months you weren't on pills for 3 months.
pic related is what the TS form asks

>>34920820
/meg/ will probably tell you lie anyway about medical history. but the smarter advice is, go look up the entire form 86 and fill it out truthfully on your own. look at the things that are going to cause you issue and think about how big an issue it might be and how easily they might find out about it if you tried to lie.
some people just can't handle lying knowing there could potentially be a poly, others can esp if told there often isn't a poly and even if there is one they won't ask medical/mental shit

its a matter of some debate how seriously you should take lying on the TS form, i highly recommend you just fill it out on your own time and see how you feel

Physical Trainer here.

I was assigned a student who is preparing for the Navy, and upon having worked with him, have some serious concerns. I have worked with many students, but by far, he is the most difficult.

He is unable to push himself any further than what he deems comfortable, feigns illness, lives in a state of denial (refusing to properly train yet acting as if he'll magically change upon entry into boot camp), and lacks both discipline and attitude to a degree where I fear he may be a danger to himself and others when put into a situation where he won't be able to run from it.

What should I do?

I wouldn't worry about it, he sounds like he'll fail out of the military and someone like that you can never convince of the truth of who they are

Once upon a time there I remember seeing something about a weekend bootcamp lite thing through the reserves that people could go to to get a taste of things, can't recall details but maybe you could convince him to do that if it exists?
>>
>>34925711
>>34925656
>>34925656

He knows enough about the military to not fall for that, but again, not enough for him to realize how fucked he is if he doesn't stop acting like a spoiled kid.

He was referred to me by a family friend, which is why I'm really trying to help him out, and I am beginning to suspect that he's been babied to a degree for most of his life. Like, 'Hmm I don't really like this specific kind of milk' level stuff. Not good at socializing, high levels of anxiety, easily angered. I've navigated around this for as long as I could by distracting him with jokes, and I see some degrees of improvement, but at the end of the day, I am worried.

Telling a kid like him that he absolutely can/must become something he really isn't, and having him possibly fail again (he was denied once due to hyperactivity, and impulsiveness diagnosis from years back) could put him into a very bad state of mind.

I hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Mixing anger issues, difficulty handling failure or conflict, and impulsiveness is not a good combination when you have access to guns.

I'm worried, is all.

If you have higher than like a 70 air guard literally bend over backwards to find you something, but I think they mostly handle enlisted positions. It's like reserves in that it's not full time though. I had a 97 on my asvab, but anywhere in the 85-90s would make you very competitive probably.

They call references, roommates, coworkers, employers, landlords, friends, family, and even elementary school teachers depending on what you need. With a "regular" TS they may not do all of that, but with certain jobs like intel and with SCI clearance, they'll probably do the majority.
>>
>>34925039
Have you taken the ASVAB yet? Recruiters won't talk jobs with you until you take the ASVAB and get your physical done at MEPS. Just study for a few weeks if you need to and try for the best score you can get. 80+ will qualify you for everything and 90+ you'll probably have first pick for almost any job (unless some hotshot came in the day before you with a 99). Air Guard generally has older, more educated enlistees so even though you might qualify for a job with your scores, they'll take the higher scores first. Also they do have guaranteed jobs, which isn't the case with the regular AF.

Alright lads, I've got a conundrum. I plan to enlist after high school, but I don't know what branch to enter. I've talked to recruiters from the army, navy, and marines. i don't want to end with a desk job or get dropped in a combat role. What do?

Your daily reminder that most Mustangs get forced out before they even make senior officer ranks. They're cool dudes to have as a boss when they're junior officers, but they're shit officers overall and it shows.

"Mustangs are good officers" from the mouths of enlisted is basically the equivalent of a little kids thinking teenagers are cool.

You're looking at maintenance or being a cook.
