Depends where you live. In my state it's basically as long as you can reasonably justify that the person is threatening you with serious physical harm or severely damage your property on your land or to protect the physical well being of another citizen. Basically a beautiful combination or stand your ground, castle, and good Samaritan laws

The basic principle is that deadly force is acceptable when there is a disparity of force that would lead to serious bodily harm. Some things that would fall into that category:

Other person has a weapon and would reasonably use it on you.
Other person is much stronger than you and seeks to cause serious injury (age, size, gender differences).
There are multiple persons who seek to cause serious injury.
You are already in a compromised position--they have the positional advantage and seek to cause serious injury.
Also sometimes castle doctrine: if a person is crazy enough to break into your home, even if they don't fit the above descriptions, you have every reason to believe they won't hesitate to cause you harm.

So generally, if some stupid drunk slut is slapping you, you can't shoot her, but some juiced up chad roughing you up can legally be put down.

The fact is, it'd be pretty hard to convince most juries that the burden of proof is on the homeowner in a legit "some dude I never met broke in at 3:00am and I shot his ass when he didn't immediately flee when challenged" trial, no matter what some law says.
