Alright /k/, it's time for a 1911 thread.

I'm sure it's going to attract plenty of...

>.45 worshipping reality deniers
>1911 worshipping fudds with a complex
>Glock worshipping tryhard shitposters
>Richfags shilling their hand fit retirement delayers
>Poorfags shilling their $400 filipino rattle traps

But I think it's worth the risk.

Post your 1911's, discuss parts, features, and brands.

I'll start things off.

Anyone here have a 9mm 1911? I've been seriously considering picking one up for range use. I've got a gucci polymer gun that I use for shooting IDPA and such, and while it's a great gun in every practical way I find it just doesn't make my dick move.

I absolutely love shooting my bare bones 10mm 1911 but it's expensive to feed, so I was thinking a 9mm 1911 might be the perfect range pistol.

Unrelated, seems like 10mm is coming back big time. Almost every manufacturer now seems to be offering some 10mm options, where just a few years ago they were few and far between. Is 10mm going to assume it's rightful place as the one true alternative to 9mm?
>>
I had a 9mm 1911 briefly and it was a very soft easy shooting pistol would suggest but you might as well just get a .22 kit if you want to save money, the 9 is very tame in a 5 inch
>>
>>34892496

I've got a Ruger MKIII for plinking with .22, 9mm is cheap enough for the most part.

What model was yours?
>>
>>34892574

raped rock island .38 super i converted with a cheap barrel, mags, and springs. Worked pretty good with ball but i sold it once i got my Colt .45 and i dont have any other 9mms
>>
>>34892574
>>34892667

the 9mm made the gun feel very tame with very gentle recoil cycle. Which is why i might honestly consider a .22 kit instead for my 1911 instead f trying to mess with a 9mm. Sucks that 10mm is so pricey i figured .45 was cheap enough for me to not really give a hoot vs 9mil.
>>
So, where's all the single stack steel pistol fags at?

Even the HKfag thread is more active.
>>
>>34893871
I just sold my Sig 1911 TacOps and bought a USP in 45. 1911 jammed on me a few times and disassembly was a pain in the ass. The bushing wouldn't rotate when I first bought it and I took it to the store owner who acknowledged it was much more difficult than normal to take apart. The smith at the store worked it a little looser for me and got it to where I could take it apart without a tool. As I said I had a few FTF and really just had more and more of a negative experience every time I used it.

Long story short, really negative experience with the firearm. Should I have given it more time and broke it in or are Sig 1911s shit?

I've been looking at a 9mm 1911, too. Presently, I've only got a Dan Wesson CBOB. Yes, it's a meme gun, but it's extremely accurate and easy to carry.

I usually carry a M&P9, but sometimes it's nice to carry a slim gun like the CBOB. Although I know the double stack 9mm is a better fighting gun, I still love the 1911. I'm looking at a Dan Wesson Specialist whenever I can talk myself into spending that much money on a pistol again.

Of course, I'm able to admit to myself that, after the first couple, I'm buying guns because I like them, rather than as practical additions to "muh armory!"

Non-Burger poorfag here.
USA 1911's prices are on the sky and scarce here.
On the other hand the Chinese Norinco 1911s are affordable, the ammunition not son much.
What im in for if i eventually buy a Norinco 1911?
>>
>>34896863

Pretty good 1911. 5000 series steel, a lot of gunsmith in the states used them as basis for custom race guns until the ban.
>>
>>34896928
So im getting a solid gun.
>mfw 200 bullets of 45 equals 305 dollars.

I just got a springfield range officer operator and a a target version both in 9mm the past month. I got a ring hammer and a Wilson combat flat trigger for the target. I just need to put them on. These are surprisingly really fun, cheap and easy to aim.

I bought a GSG 1911 22 with a polished slide. Got the CWA upgrades, performace enhancement kit, shock buff, and barrel cap.
Did I do good? All I want to do is shoot paper.
>>
>>34896015

You can consider the first minimum 200 rounds out of a pistol a break-in period. If you didn't get past that and the first thorough cleaning you really didn't even give it a chance.
>>
>>34897176

Nice. I've actually got a polished Ithaca slide and barrel and I've been meaning to assemble it into a complete gun. Any suggestions on who to buy a frame from? I want a 100%.
>>
>>34897786
I wouldn't know. My slide is a stealth arms. It's nice, but they don't sell 100% frames.

I like the aluminum frame though. Good weight savings.

A surprising number of 1911s have feed ramps that are too shallow. Single stacks mags naturally cause nosedives, so you want a deep feed ramp to guide the rounds back up. My Springfield doesn't feed JHPs reliably because of this. All of the Sigs I picked up also have shallow feed ramps so I don't even bother looking at Sigs anymore. A properly made 1911 like a Colt will have a nice deep feedramp that goes down to the bottom of the slide stop window. This is the first thing I look for in a 1911.

Also, 1911s usually come with shit mags. The only mags I found work are the GI tapered feedlip mags that are only available as surplus from the CMP and Tripp Cobras.

My two Colts. Both are 45s. Top is a Wiley Clapp CCO that I use as my carry gun. It's a commander length slide on an officer grip length aluminum frame. Bottom is a Wiley Clapp government.

I have several 1911s and figured out what I want in them:
Fiber optic front and blacked out rear sights
GI style low profile thumb safety
Beavertail grip safety and commander hammer
VZ grips
S&A magwell
Short trigger
Undercut trigger guard
Front strap checkering
17 lbs mainspring for better felt recoil
Deep feed ramps

The Wiley Clapp models were the closest to meeting the above and I just took it the rest of the way.

I also have a Dan Wesson PM9 in 9mm. It's stupidly soft shooting and quite reliable. Also have an STI 2011 in 9mm as well.
>>
>>34898733
My 80% frame was shallow like that. It would cycle fmjs but hollowpoints would hang up on the bottom edge of the ramp. After re machining the ramp the gun feeds much easier. It eats everything when cycling normally. If you let the slide forward slowly it will feed everything except the first fmj in an 8 round mag. The OAL is such that the cartridge has to hop over the rim under it at the same time the bullet hits the ramp. Still working on a solution for this btw.

I guess its about time to get on the 1911 train. I already have a glock 19 for cc so dont give me that shit. Whats a good medum range 1911?
>I dont want to spend more then 5-600 dollars, >certainly not looking for anything custom.

>>
>>34892469
Well I'm finally caving and deciding to buy a 1911. However i cant decide between a 45 and a 10mm. I already have a 45 as my carry piece, so getting a 10mm would be cool because i don't own one but it just doesn't seem practical because the ammo is more expensive and less available in stores. Idk guys I'm stumped, what do yall think? I really want to add a 1911 to my collection so any input would be appreciated.

>>
>>34900599
RIA or norinco, or springield/auto ord if your budget is higher.
>>
>>34898787

I'm really torn right now between buying a 5" 9mm to rice out, versus just fitting some nicer parts into my Kimber 10mm (grip safety, safety, trigger, springs) and sticking with that. 10mm is just so expensive to shoot.

The boner I have for a full size 9mm 1911 with a light and RMR is way too big. Would the extra mass of the RMR cause issues with the lighter recoiling 9mm?
>>
>>34900906

10mm ammo availability / cost is literally the only downside to 10mm. I love shooting mine.

Fortunately, 10mm seems to be coming back "in". More and more manufacturers are offering 10mm variants and that's going to mean more available ammo, at lower prices.

It's up to you, but when I was working at a gun shop and Kimber offered me a free gun I chose the TLE II 10mm over the numerous .45 offerings.
>>
Why not a 9mm 2011 for the double stack?
>>
>>34902542

Because that completely changes the ergos of the gun, which is a big part of the reason I like shooting my 1911 so much in the first place.

I already have a quality poly framed double stack 9mm, so there's no real point to something like that for me.

I've been hearing 10mm fags blare on about that caliber for like 10 years. It's so fucking annoying, they're the Jehovahs Witnesses or Crossfit spergs of the gun world
>>
>>34903267

Yeah, there's a lot of 10mm fanboyism for sure. You literally can't avoid that shit in the firearms community though.

>1911 fags
>Glock fags
>AK fags
>AR fags
>5.56x45mm fags
>.45 Auto fags

Everybody picks a favorite and shills the fuck out of it. 10mm is no better or worse.

Fact of the matter is though, 10mm activity and options ARE picking up. RIA is selling 10mm 1911s now too. Maybe the shills just whined loudly enough, but I think .40 is losing popularity and 10mm is picking up.
>>
Is it wise to get a cheap 1911 first to practice disassembling it without scratching it, then spring for a super nice one?

Also is nighthawk custom worth the price or is it just for people with too much money?
>>
>>34903412

>Without scratching it

Do you want a gun or a display piece?

Nighthawks are great guns, but mostly for people with too much money. Dan Wessons are about the most expensive 1911's worth buying. Anything else is for gucci / status / national level competition.

>>
>>34903695
Retarded design IMO. Why would you need tools to do a FIELD strip?
>>
>>34903844

Because the gun was designed in the early 1900's.

That said, lots of guns need a simple tool for a field strip. Plenty of AK's need something to pry the gas tube lever with, some AR's receiver pins fit tight enough to need a punch, etc etc.

How is the compact Range Officer? I'm able to get one for $550 and it's pretty tempting.

>400 dollar rattle trap.

Did not know that people thought this. Regardless, that's factually wrong. 2,000 rounds through the pipe, and the slightest rattle in the rails in the slide. 1911s are some of the most common produced guns in the world, they don't need to cost the amount they do.

... You didn't pick the most expensive one to flip?
>>
>>34904550

For the record, I'm OP and I think the RIA 1911s are a great $400 pistol.

I was just calling out the fags that think RIA is the end-all be-all of 1911s. The RIA GI is a great example of what an economy of scale mass production affordable 1911 should be.

People who pay more are buying fit, finish, feel, and status. Nothing more.
>>
>>34904621
i feel the auto ordnance gi 1911s are vastly overlooked. made in the usa too, not philippines muzzie land.
>>
>>34903996
The AK BCG does that though. Also bullets can push pins.
>>
>>34904550
Glad to see you like your ATI. I have one on the way to the FFL, paid like $360 for it.

Is rattle really a bad thing? Aren't loose tolerances good for a weapon like the 1911?
>>
>>34904610

No, I never did. I got four free guns over the time I worked there (only one Kimber), and the closest I came to "flipping" any of them is I gave one to a family member as a Christmas gift.

I know some of the other guys were doing that, but the spirit of all those kinds of programs is that you'll more likely to shill their guns if you own one yourself, and that's a strong selling point for normies too. "Yeah check out this gun I bought, the guy at the shop said he has the same gun so it must be good".

So I kept them, shot them, and when customers asked I was honest about my experience with each one.

Maybe that makes me a fag, but oh well. Truth be told, I haven't had any problems with my Kimber. I had our shop smith (an actual qualified machinist and trained smith, not that shadetree shit so many shops have) look it over when I got it and he said it was one of the better Kimbers he'd ever seen. They probably cherry pick their incentive guns. Not even the rust that seems so common with many of their guns, even after it got rained on for a few straight hours when I got caught in the rain storm. That doesn't mean the finish is good, it's got a ton of holster wear for the actual amount of use it's seen. No rust though.

I won't shill Kimber, but I don't have a reason to talk shit yet either. I'll probably replace the safety, grip safety, trigger, sear, and slide stop eventually just to be safe. It's a great beater gun.
>>
>>34904709

And you can use all manner of improvised tools to release a barrel bushing too, including the magazine if you're not a fuckup. You don't need a dedicated bushing tool, it just makes it easier.

My Springfield Mil-spec. Bought it a couple years ago. Lucked out and got one of the US made ones. Replaced the hammer, trigger, mainspring housing, sights (had to get it cut for novak), got some magpul grips (love. Sooo good), and put in a one piece guide rod. Recently gut the trigger guard undercut and the grip checkered, then had the whole thing cerakoted. No malfunctions yet and shoots great. Definitely could have bought something better for less considering all the crap I've done to it, but at the time I honestly thought I'd be happy with it stock. The undercut, the sights, and the mainspring were by far the best upgrades, and for the money, the magpul grips were completely worth it. I tried slim grips briefly, but it makes the grip too small for my hand to hold well.
