Savage Axis is pretty much the king of cheap .308's, and you get a good deal for what they can do. For hunting the Axis and a 1-6x budget optic, few boxes of ammo and other little addons will be well under a grand. Alternatively get a better scope, bipod and good ammunition and you get yourself a pretty decent long range gun as well.

Howa 1500 is a great rifle. Very cheap and ive used very effectively to knock down goats.

i would suggest a .270 win, but im just in love with that cartridge for hunting, in most cases a .308 will do.
