I thought the hammer was badass but then I lifted a small handheld sledgehammer and it was pretty damn heavy and this guys hammer looks like it would eat the hammer I lifted for breakfast so I was just asking if it would actually be practical?

It's really not that much more exaggerated than the oversized axe Euron uses.

>>
>>34887852
A pine and plastic prop? No. You should not attempt to fight in life or death combat with props.

Joking aside, that looks like the ballpark of (if not a plastic prop) a 40 pound hammer. It would be utterly useless as a weapon.

>>34887857
Sadly, bio-mechanics don't work like that. To swing or thrust a weight that large at the end of a lever generates a tremendous amount of momentum that would make it's path very predictable. It would be hopelessly clumsy in a fight, to the point that a person would be better served by dropping it and fighting bare handed, no matter how strong they were.
>>
weapons is all about force/area, big fucking fantasy hammers are heavy, but they have a large contact area too, so not only will it be a bitch to handle, its wont do more damage than a much smaller lighter hammer

Call me a retard but if I was fighting a fully armored samurai that somehow dropped his spear and was using a Katana I think if I had proper knight armor and a shield I would have an advantage trying to beat the shit out of him with a small hammer over using a sword. How accurate is this assuming I've never held a sword?
>>
>>34887985
Just look up war hammer
>>
>>34888002
As far as I know samurai armor wasnt really armor in the sense that european armor was
I would say that his katana would be pretty much useless againts your armor if it was late style and from proper metal
And as far as hammers they are only really good againts heavy armored opponents so to say so I think a sword would be more proficient againts a samurai
>>
>>34888021
>And as far as hammers they are only really good againts heavy armored opponents
So if I hit you in the head with a hammer you'd be alright as long as you weren't wearing a helmet?
>>
>>34888021
retard
>>
>>34888021
This. If an opponent isnt wearing armor, you would have to land a pretty solid hit into someone before you could start hurting them. With a sword, at least a small hit would cause a cut. With the hammer, you will get a bruise or nothing without solid and forcefull contact.
>>
>>34888056
Nice rebuttal
>>
>>34888021
>>34888060

My logic was that I have no clue how to use a sword and I'd probably hit the samurai in places where his armor would completely negate most of the damage where as with the small hammer no matter where I hit him I'd do quite a bit of damage.
>>
>>34887852
what were they thinking?

it's such an obvious movie prop, you could tell it was plastic immediately, the hack fraud actor doesn't even pretend that it's heavy
>>
>>34888075
I kinda thought the same thing but at the same time that hammer looks pretty sweet and instantly made me a hammer guy.
>>
>>34887852

is the head is solid steel, not at all, if it is hollow, although I see no reason why, it would spread it's kinetic strength over too wide area to make it effective against armor while simultaneously make it harder to control the pike, all in all it's a cartoonish weapon is series that so far showed weapons quite realistically

I feel it was done as not to be disappointing to the wider audience with a representation of a realistic war hammer that in reality was quite small

I'd be ok if he was wielding an actual forge hammer
>>
>>34888067
Ye but samurai armor is just fucking bamboo mainly
So if you just stab him the sword should guide itself between the bamboo sticks and slide right into him
Sure you can hit him a million times with the hammer or just manage to stab him once and gg
>>34888047
Ye but much easier to stab someone anywhere than to just aim for the head with a short war hammer
>>
>>34888103
What if he made it hollow like you said but specifically to attack unarmored opponents and I'm pretty sure the end of that thing even if hollow is at six or eight pounds so it should work fine for that and the spike end was something he added in case they had light armor? Would you consider it decent at that point or would the style not make up for it because I think that might be the logic behind this weapons this kid made because he specifically says he's not a soldier.
>>
>>34888115
Yea but you've got to think I have literally no training with a sword while the samurai guy would know all kinds of ways to parry me and maybe even disarm me. I think coming at him with a shield and small war hammer like a crazed gorilla would have to be my best bet.
>>
>>34887852
He's a big guy
>>
>>34888133
2/2
Another reason I say this is because I think I'd have a size advantage over a samurai which I imagine to be small so why wouldn't I just use it? I'd likely die either way but I really think the hammer/shield combo would give me and most unskilled swordsman the better shot.
>>
>>34888150
Sure charging with a hammer would work
You seem to think that samurais were the shit or something
They had horrible armor and katanas were only good for beheading
They mainly used spears so I would say that you have a pretty good chance to fuck his shit up if you get close
He wouldn't be able use his katana which means he cant do shit unless he has a a dagger or pokes your eyes out
>>
>>34888180
I actually chose the samurai as an example because I know I'd probably be taller and more muscular and it's probably the only warrior I'd be able to take because of my complete lack of experience with swords or anything similar.
>>
>>34887985
A 8 pound sledgehammer is too heavy and clumsy to make a proper weapon, but you could fight with one if desperate. Heavy hanners would be better served putting a hand just under the head and using the handle more then the head. Big, dramatic swings look good, but they are extremely dangerous.
>>
>>34887852
Head of the hammer is WAY too big.
Hammer is not nearly long enough.
Hammer is lacking a spear point at the top.

why cant americans into film or photography?
>>
>>34888311
No reject the hammer itself has dragonfire in it which causes it to vibrate like crazy which is why the hammer is so deadly. That's why it's blurry.
>>
>>34888060
Swords don't cut through mail or armor. You can try to force the stabby end through weakpoints (gorget, armpit), but slashing at an armored opponent gets you exactly nowhere.

A Hammer, on the other hand, could seriously cripple a plate armored opponent if you can hit the joints of his armor - and a blow to the head will knock anyone down, the helmet just transfers the kinetic energy to your skull (if it's not top notch)
>>
>>34887985

There was a battle going on in this particular scene and everything was shaking. They were about to head outside and fight.

No, it's a typical comically sized fantasy weapon. Pretty weird in a show where weapons were mostly realistic so far.

Head is far too big and heavy, even if it is hollow. That thing would be extremely unwieldy and slow.
Head is also unbalanced, combined with the rounded handle it would cause the whole thing to turn in his hand and he could end up hitting with the side.

It's two handed but barely longer than a single handed hammer. Since he's going to have trouble carrying that thing around (no way he'll hang it from his belt) he might as well go with a pole hammer like pic related and have reach.

You'd be wrong, there's a reason they developed striking weapons over there too. At minimum you're looking at chainmail over a series of silk robes in a fashion similar to mail & gambeson. Depending on circumstances the samurai you end up fighting may just be wearing modified Yuro armor.

>>34887985
Also shit. If you want to hit people with a hammer pick up one of those long Estwings or a modern piece based on a design that was actually used. Cold Steel's tomahawks aren't awful and the people who make them make a hammer so that hammer is probably not awful, you might want to start there.

What if its re-enforced aluminum?
So its soft and light but rigid enough to cause wounds?
>>
>>34888914
Nice, you actually made me laugh.
>>
>>34888925
The problem is that aluminum is easy to produce if you have access to electricity, and nearly impossible to produce without it. That's why aluminum was extremely valuable before the second half of the 19th century, but is trivially cheap now. The upshot is that in medieval Westeros, getting enough aluminum together to make a hammer like that out of it would be nearly impossible.
>>
>>34888940
I think if that hammer was hollow it would beat the shit out of people just fine and the spike would help against light armor.
>>
>>34887873
Well then there's your answer. Hammers are still very useful for things like breaking down doors, but for actually fighting they're too limited.
>>
>>34887932

Correct. Warhammers' most important feature would be the spike- used to break through plated armour/chainmail. The "hammer" part would be used as melee to strike the head, might do very little unless victim didn't have a helmet.

Baratheon men are know for retarded strength. His father King Robert was known for effortlessly using a hammer even larger than Gendry's. While in full plate.

in the real world. This hammer would tire you out after a few swings and leave you open as you recover from and set up the next swing.the lack of points on face of the hammer and the hammer face's rounded head would cause it to glance off targets, especially armored targets. so not all the energy would be imparted. your swings would also probably be slow. So you aren't hitting harder than a light hammer going faster.

In real life you'd never carry a hammer like that because it would be too heavy and difficult to wield. Real war hammers were generally much lighter. If the hammer in the show had been real, then that character would not have been able to swing it about as quickly as he did.

I dunno, maybe there's some sorta magic at work. I mean, some houses have occasional magic abilities that pop up in certain members- the Starks have wargs every now and then, the Targaryens have draconic affinity and fire resistance- maybe the Baratheons have something similar that just makes them incredibly strong.

Or maybe it's just a silly show prop that they made really large so it'd be visually striking, I don't know.

Surface area of the contact surface, weights, and length of the moment arm (handle) are all factors effecting the force at head of the hammer.

A light head was used with a long arm since it was the most maneuverable and with a small striking head could pierce or crush bones.

Modern hammers are big since a nail is a snaller target than a human head. Small arms are used since compactness is more useful as a tool while having a long arm allowed you to grapple and parry certain weapons while delivering enough force to strike through plate armor while being lighter.
>>
>>34896647
Big ass hammers still get used as tools for things like driving shafts in large machines, or driving things into the ground.
>>
>>34892965
Why do they even bother showing arya parrying her, it's clearly impossible considering her weapon can't block any weapon larger than itself given the blade is so small and the guard is basically nonexistent.

Even if Arya had a normal sword to parry with, her small stature and inferior strength would mean she would just be overpowered anyways if she tried to block. She should have just dodged all the attacks, while it's obviously not realistic it's at least plausible unlike her block

Useless. "Warhammers" are useless when spears and polearms exist. That thing he's holding would be way too heavy to be practical in combat and it looks too short.

How useful would this sword be in actual combat?
>>

I wonder if hafthor bjornsson or guys like him would be able to swing it once or twice.

Personally I think the handle would bend just under the weight of the blade.
>>
>>34887852
way to mucg heavy unless it's aluminium in which case it is probably too soft or does not have enough pressure to cause significant damage besides direct neck and head shots.
>>
>>34900529
i guess you could drop it on someone's head in a siege
>>
>>34900548
It's roughly tent times the weight of a normal sword, so you'll need someone ten times the strength, and probably at least five times the weight, of a normal person to swing it a functional way.

Try a hundred.
https://www.albion-swords.com/swords/albion/nextgen/sword-medieval-danish-2-hander.htm

That's a huge sword, and it's only 4lbs 10oz.
>>
>>34900905
I just mean like lift it and smash some target with it or something.

What i meant is that if someone is trying to dodge you, and you are swinging at an arm or other part of the body that is moving away fron you. If they stand still, it would be hard to not get a solid hit.

Mathematically, if that was SOLID steel, it would weigh at least 50 - 60lbs. Not exactly a quick and efficient weapon realistically.

Pic related however is what was used historically to deal with knights and heavily armored infantry. It's comparatively light at 10 lbs and the thinner and longer spike means a smaller surface area for better penetration.

If you were strong enough to wield it, maybe

But you were strong enough to lift and swing what looks like 40lbs around, you're already the Mountain and you'd be better off with a zweihander

Nigga you don't need to be particularly strong to wield any sword, even the biggest

Now as a HEMAfag, allow me to educate you:
If you need to be especially strong to wield a melee weapon, it's a shit melee weapon.
It doesn't take much to kill or at least incapacitate a human - weapons were made to be as light as you could feasibly get away with, even those that relied on blunt impact.

Waaay too heavy.
