Look at the picture you posted. The casing is much bigger, which means there's obviously more powder in there. The bullet will be fired with much more energy.

Britfag here, still going through my probationary period at a shooting club, but what is there to defend exactly? The bullets of the cartridges have the same diameter but that's about all they have in common. Is there something wrong with that?

They act nothing alike downrange unless you are strictly shooting paper within 100 yards.
