What do I get?
Is it shit?
is it realistic?

Incoming dump of what i have seen lurking.. Here is my dream rifle.
>>
Start out with a 10/22, you cannot go wrong with it and it's cheap and affordable to train and to hone your shooting skills all before "graduating" to the normal calibers as such you've listed.

Reasons:
1) 22lr affords you nearly no flinch (flinches are bad and can be difficult to retrain if you start on 9mm and or so and you flinch away from the very start)
2) it's affordable
3) you can work and focus on the smooth movement of your trigger pull

Alternatively you could work with a bolt rifle if you want too.

Get it. It's not great compared to other rifles, but it's not bad. I have one, and love it. It's really only a range queen for me though. What optic are you thinking of?
>>
>>34884355
Revolvers and shotguns are about as simple as it gets. Get a break action shotgun, single barrel or side-by-side, or a pump. Maybe a revolver in .38/.357? Just go to your LGS and start playing with stuff. Any good gun store will encourage you to finger fuck everything in the store.

>What your god tier rifle then?
I'm not the guy you were replying to, but I totally agree with him. It's an okay rifle just because I think its cool, and so do other people. It's not the most reliable. It's heavy. It prefers ~168gr ammo, which means its not that accurate with cheaper surplus loads. It may or may not be accurate, depending on how lucky you are and how much you're willing to spend. Even the low end versions would be considered expensive by most people ($1300-$1600), and higher end versions will run you $2500-$3500.

I bought a used M1A Scout and it shot about 12 MOA. I spent maybe $500 on higher quality parts and tools and spent dozens of hours learning how to accurize it, followed by working on it. Now it shoots ~1.5 MOA with the right ammo. It was a pain in the ass and very disappointing to learn how shitty Springfield Armory M1As can actually be, and all that work really just brought it up to par with an out of the box AR10. If I could do it again, I'd have just bought a Fulton Armory rifle from the start.

I only like the rifle because of its history and the action is cool. I also have a CMP special grade M1, and that bitch was a tack driver from the start.

That Ruger is fine if you want the M1 carbine look. Personally I have a takedown that comes with me any time I go out of town (I can fit my AR broken down and the 10/22 in the carry bag the 10/22 comes with).

Also, you do know those shorty shotguns are NFA items right? Kinda in a similar boat as suppressors and machine guns.

>>34884551
Recoil is plenty manageable, but it's nowhere near as light as an AR. Even shooting the same caliber, all that mass moving back and forth makes it jump a bit. Still not a bad choice of course.

Yeah man, I would avoid M1A's for now. That's a connoisseur's rifle for sure. Have you considered a palin jane pump action 12 ga field shotgun. My first gun was a Binelli Nova and it is THE most firearm one can buy. Want to hunt big game? Want to hunt forest game? Want to hunt birds? Want to defend your /k/astle? Want to bust clays? Want to safely celebrate by drunkenly discharging a firearm into the open air? Want ammo that's plentiful and cheap? 12 guage has you covered. .22 isn't a bad idea. Also, if you buy one and decide you want something different, you'll have the funds because a 12 ga pump can be had for a couple hundred bucks. Just this anon's opinion.

ATF classifications are weird and dumb as hell.

Any firearm that isn't classified as a shotgun already, that has a barrel less than 16 inches, AND has a buttstock, is automatically classified as a short-barreled rifle by the ATF, and much more stringently regulated compared to normal firearms.

However, that weapons you see up there doesn't actually have a buttstock, but an "arm brace", which is a nice, albeit less comfortable loophole to still have a "buttstock" of sorts on your weapon without having to register your weapon as an SBR. Because it lacks a buttstock, regardless of barrel length it automatically is classified as a pistol by the ATF.

Same with this thing here. By the ATF's logic, this is a pistol.
>>
>>34884672
An older one, yes. Otherwise, a Mossman Mav-88 or 500 will serve you faithfully for decades. Never too late to start huntin, most places give free hunters' safety courses.
If you're some sort of urbanite then you will have indoor ranges with rentals nearby. You can put together a list and rent whatever they have that's on it there.

Everybody should have at least one AR, there is no excuse. Even if you dislike them, it's worth it to get one just because.

The Springfield name was bought out like in the 70s, and the company doesn't make shit on par with the old government owned armory that originally made the M14s. All the original blueprints and tooling were sold to the Chinese (Norinco specifically) so the new Shitfield had to reverse engineer the gun. If ou want a good m14 clone, look at Fulton Armory, but be prepared to pay for it and still have a heavy as fuck rifle with less inherent accuracy than an AR-10 (inherent accuracy, not actualized. A FA m14 should shoot better than you easily).

>>34884383
I have a S&W TRR8
Do not buy it for your first gun. The barrel shroud comes loose easily and you will have to loctite it back on or send it to s&w for them to retighten. Why? Because tightening the shroud unscrews the barrel from the frame because some retarded engineer thought it would be a good idea to make both threads travel in the same direction.
Also light primer strikes so you'll have to install an extended firing pin.

However it has an excellent trigger and is very accurate. I regularly get 2-3 inch groups at 25 yards, which I think is great.

The rails are highly overrated. The bottom rail is too short to mount a proper light or laser. The top rail is pointless when you can just buy red dot adaptor mounta for s&w n-frames that can replace the rear sights.

"best revolver" is a bit subjective.
Having spare parts available is really important to me and I'm also a sucker for certain aesthetics.

Ruger gp100 is the best starter revolver because it's solid and simply built with no obvious problems.
I want the Korth Nighthawk Super Sport for the aesthetics and because it's a Korth AND a Nighthawk, but it's like $5k.
The Manurhin mr73 is widely regarded as incredibly robust and accurate, but I've never handled one.
The S&W 627 is basically a railless 327 (trr8) without the shroud problem, but I think it looks ugly as fuck.

The barrels are parallel instead of having a point of convergence, so you'll have to compromise with your optic on where you want the point of impact to be.
The foreend wiggles from side to side. It's not a fitting problem, it's inherent to to the flimsy feeding mechanism transfer bars. It probably doesn't impede performance but it pisses me off.
It's heavy as shit, almost 10 lbs unloaded. But the outside is a polymer shell so you don't really get to FEEL all that aluminum. Speaking of which their polymer has ugly dye stains. Lastly it uses Trulock choke threads but Standard Manufacturing won't admit it because they want you to buy their special dp12 chokes.

I have a gen 4 Uts15 on the way, I want to see if they've worked out all the gen 1/2 kinks.

SW 686+ holds seven and is available in a variety of barrel lengths. Consider the Ruger Security/ Service Sixes as well, only six shots but they're gems that turn up at affordable prices on occasion and bulletproof functionality-wise. Handgins are only a good choice if you're leaving the homestead. I try not to and keep a rifle and shotgun close at hand, never know when gummint/ blacks/ commies are gonna ram the compound gate...

Not even close. Heavy as fuck. Cant shoot low brass in semi. Some parts can be hard to find. Controls are a little goofy, nothing too terrible aside from needing to hold the bolt release to load shells. Much better options out there, especially for the 1200-1500 you would most likely pay.

The biggest QC issues the 870 has been experiencing since 2006 is mostly contained to the 'Express' line (cut corners to make it cheaper). If you want to buy a new 870 then pick-up a Police model. They can be had on Gunbroker for about $600

http://www.gunbroker.com/All/BI.aspx?Keywords=Remington+870+Police&Sort=13
>>
>>34885239
The 870 Express has pretty bad quality control. Which isn't surprising seeing how it's a budget model and they cut as many corners as they could to keep price down.

But the new Wingmasters and Police guns are fine.

Get it. You don't need /k/ to validate your choices. The way this place works is anything good has a hater, and that hater will devote themselves to making you feel bad for not sharing in their hatred of x firearm.

Additionally scoop up an AR15 because they're dirt cheap right now, it makes antis cry, and you'll have ammo, parts, and magazine commonality with most civilian, police, and military in North America and to a lesser extent Western civilization.

I have one and it is pretty nice. I advise spending an extra dollar for the JRA builds because they have better parts and forged receivers. MAYBE a JRA BM-59 build because they have a few of those and they are a pretty good deal.
If you get an SAI, look for older ones. 5-digit serial number and down have USGI parts. 1500ish and down have USGI barrels. I have one of the latter and it's a fantastic shooter.

As a rule however, modularity is meh and while scopes can be mounted expect to use a cheek riser and SAI mounts are junk. Smith Enterprises and Trijicon make good ones but they are very expensive.
>>34884352
+1 on a .22 rifle, but I think bolt-action rifles are better. Ruger American .22LR for instance. CZ452 if you want the last .22 rifle you will ever want.
>>34884355
Pythons are overpriced for what they are. Walking Dead drove the prices through the roof. There are other Colt .357s that are far less expensive. Classic Smiths and especially Rugers are dirt cheap by comparison. If you want something really special track down a Manurhin MR-73. They are very rare however.
>>34884375
That's a Ruger Mini-14 rear sight. It's hot garbage. Expect to replace it the second you get that rifle.
>>34884391
.357 is the most versatile pistol cartridge. Only thing you could do better on a wheelgun is maybe a 9mm or .45 revolver for ammunition cost and cross-compatibility. Even then, .357 guns can fire .38 if recoil/price is a factor.
>>34884427
For a first shotgun get a full stock. Pistol grips are useful for that one day where you just want to dick around and you will immediately want to stick the stock back on.

Mossberg combo is the best deal. I've owned 12 shotguns over the years, my Mossberg is the first one and it's the only one I still own. For actual bird/clay shooting don't pass up on a 20ga. Low recoil, EZ shooting all day. Also hilariously cheap slugs.
>>
>>34884505
Mossberg Model 500.
12ga 5+1 capacity, 18.5" and 28" combo. Every sporting goods store worth a shit sells them for $300ish.
>>34884525
They're mostly gimmicky. I hear they have problems. Among them apparently no decocker, so if you cock the hammer you MUST fire it. Still kinda want one.
>>34884880
All modern M1As suffer from hit/miss QC. Loaded/Match/Supermatch have better QC tolerances but aren't worth the cost.

I advise going used for an older one (sub 150000 serial range at least) or spending the extra dollar on JRA.
You don't need a breeching shotgun, but just about any shotgun or rifle can blow door locks out.
>>34884975
Their 8-shot also has a 2.75" barrel. I'd want at least 4 if not 6 inches on a frame that big. You aren't going to be concealing it no matter what. Also if you want extra capacity S&W 686 Plus, it's a 7-shot. Maybe a Taurus Tracker.
>>34885005
DP-12 is all gimmick and has horrible function issues. KSG is a bit special snowflake but it's basically a modernized Neostead. I'd get a KSG between the two, although Mossberg 500 is still the best choice.
>>
>>34885354
Having owned one it's the everything else. Their receivers were always cast, which is fine but they gradually went to cast parts elsewhere and gradually started making those cheaper and cheaper. A modern one compared to a 1990s model or a non SAI M14gery is a hot mess.

That's not even holding the standard very high either. Some of the original military M14s had problems too. The fact that I'm all but standing on my head advising USGI parts or anything non SAI should be telling.

Only Norinco and Federal Ordnance were worse. Nprinco gets a pass for forged receivers but their barrels and parts were dogshit and their recivers were often too brittle or dimentionally out of spec.
>>
>>34886091
Huh, I haven't seen mass complaints about the current M1A's QC. Did this just start happening or does SA not give a shit?

They function. They feed, fire and eject. They are safe to fire. Parts last the 1000 or so rounds that people typically fire before throwing them in the safe and forgetting.

The M14 design is one that requires extremely good care and attention to build well. Any cut corners will cause a gun that shoots poorly and will require a lot of work to unfuck. You can't just throw them together like they do with $400 AR-15s and expect to group any better than a warmed-up Mini-14 from the 1990s. It's an older design, parts that shouldn't have an impact on accuracy do and must be fitted with all the others accordingly.

As an example, the operating rod functions as the bolt carrier. It is attached to the barrel by a guide. Barrel is threaded into the receiver.
If the barrel is over-tightened or under-tightened the op-rod will either be off to the left or right. The gas piston will not hit it straight and it will not move correctly, which impacts how the bolt locks up causing an erratic zero shift.
It can also cause the op rod to either periodically jump out of the track or alternatively be so stuck in place that you can't remove it during cleaning.

Un-fucking that requires the gunsmith to either thread the barrel in or out, adjust headspace on the bolt face and re-stake the barrel in it's new position without damaging the receiver, which is a pressure-bearing component.
>>
>>34884439
629 classic Hunter was my first gun! I was retarded and thought I'd buy that for carry. Took my advice from Magnum Force (Dirty Harry sequel) when he said .357 mag can bounce off a car windshield.

Older and less autistic now. Get a Glock for your first handgun. If you're in love with revolvers, Smith & Wesson kicks ass, just not .44 Mag.
>>
>>34886184
M14 seems really temperamental. Was the M1 Garand ever like this?
>>
>>34884588
Yes, used is worth it if you have money. Spending more for new won't get any extra value out of those. You buy'em, they work.

Speaking of course about Mossberg. I've seen multiple Remington's where I had to physically jiggle the slide to get it to feed.

Also, all their ammo I've ever fired had more felt recoil than other ammo.

>Tl;Dr: fuck Remington
>>
>>34886281
In theory yes, but seeing that almost all Garands available were built and re-built to government specifications by government arsenals or QC inspected vendors this is a non-problem.

There are some that were built on cut up/re-welded receivers and cast Century receivers using mixmaster parts and careless assembly. Those do have issues.

It's what you get with a lot of older designs. Century CETME kit rebuilds were dogshit. MAS-49 .308 conversions. Various sketchy-ass FAL builds. Then there were Universal M1 Carbines which would blow up because they omitted an out of battery safety to save a few cents. Even AKs, yes I remember the $300 WASR builds that had canted front sights and gas tubes, dremelled magazine wells that would wobble and warped receivers that weren't stamped correctly.

The reason cheap AR-15s work is because the bolt locks into a barrel extension, bypassing a lot of these kinds of problems. Shit-tier AR-15 builds still have all manner of issues though. Moral of the story is don't buy a gun where the manufacturer has been cutting corners they ought not be cutting. Sometimes they can and it saves cost and that's good. Sometimes it causes problems.
>>
>>34885277
>Second this

If you don't own an AR, do it. I've seen wicked cheap ones around $350. Most functional ones around $400. That's competing with SKSs.
>>
>>34886549
It's actually cheaper. Most SKS rifles I'm seeing are around $500 nowadays.

10/22, mini 14, or an SKS would all be great for first rifles. 10/22 or mini 14 are going to be best out of the box though, and since you're new you may have trouble spotting some of the indicators that a used rifle is in bad condition, as with the SKS.

Also it takes a practice at first to get your eye and the dot lined up with out having to find it, so irons make a good aid in learning where your gun needs to be.
