There are a few legit reasons to do that, or even a beanbag first round.
First, it makes you less likely to freeze up. The first shot is "less lethal", so you will be willing to pull the trigger and not freeze up because you're unwilling to kill/afraid of the reprecussions.
2. A less-lethal shot allows better analysis of target action. A petty thief who doesn't want to die will GTFO and later be caught hospitalizing himself for birdshot injuries, a case of mistaken identity will resolve quickly (we've all heard the stories of the unannounced innocent visitor getting shot) and so forth. If he's clearly aggressive after getting shot, shoot to kill.
I'm personally of the opinion that if you're pointing a gun at someone you had better mean it, and shoot to kill, but the less lethal crowd do have some logic to what they say.

AK's will run longer than other guns under normal combat conditions. They deal better with the build up of sand, dirt, and fouling that happens in that situation. AR's will choke on amounts of that stuff that don't bother the AK. Getting your gun filled with gravelly mud is not normal, I have spent plenty of time running around the woods with guns, and I've gotten dirt, snow, rain, mud etc on them. I have yet to just drop a rifle in the mud. I really like both AR's and AK's, but the people who act like the AK is not reliable because it choked on fucking pebble soup that wouldn't even fit into the AR is stupid. There are plenty of torture tests on youtube showing AK's beat the shit out of AR's in far more normal scenarios like sand and dirt and normal mud. But then Sperg Ferguson comes along and now anytime I mention I like AK's because of their reliability I get AR fanboys mentioning that one video. I guess if I lived in a muddy WW1 trench an AR would be better.
