Thinking of picking up a Winchester 94, preferably used. What should I look for when purchasing this quintessential American rifle?
>>34880270
What caliber are you looking for?
Whats your main purpose for it? hunting? inna woods Camp defense?
Do you care if its a modern version with cross-bolt safety? if so, maybe you want an older one?
Definitely buy used. Go lurk around your local pawn shops and try to find an old one. Pre-64s can be had for relatively cheap if the shop doesn't know much about them. My 1950 94 was $400

And for future reference

"Ranger" model is a long gun
"Trapper" model is the carbine/brush gun madel
modern versions with safety are fine unless you have autism
>>34880309
>unless you have autism
Do you know where you are?
>>34880270
Fuck. I'm hooked. Now I'm wanting a 94 or 92. I just picked up a Henry in .357 and I completely stopped caring about anything but lever guns.
>>34880304
That is nice
>>34880294
30-30. I'm looking at one from the 50's for $500 but my LGS has a few other rifles from the 80s to new. Want it mostly because I've always loved the design and I can always find 30-30.
>>34880346
500 isn't bad for a pre-64.
>Pic was a 14" 94 from the 20s with an ATF exemption letter. Unfortunately I didn't have the 3 grand my LGS wanted for it
>>34880304
What should I look for when buying used? Fit, finish, bore - all the usual stuff?
>>34880425
Yep, exactly. Make sure everything operates smoothly, check for any pitting or cracks in the furniture.
>>34880461
Not him, but I haven't seen any locally around me. Would you ever consider buying one online?
>>34880470
If you're stuck buying online, the newer ones are ok. They don't have the collectable nature of the older ones of course, but they should be perfectly fine shooters.
>>34880501
Are they? I might do that. I picked up a Henry because I didn't really like the Marlins I was looking at and just wanted a fun lever gun to take out innawoods in .357.
Also, what's your preference. Large loops or standard/small loops. I can't tell which I like more. I got to shoot a 92 large loop carbine in .45 colt that was a blast.
Now I want a 92 or 94 in another caliber.
>>34880461
Are you me?
>>34880270
Pre 1964 are considered better made rifles. Some manufacturing short cuts were done in 1964. Google it. Easy enough to spot the differences. Watch for plugged scope mounts. a lot of these were fudd deer rifles. Fudds like their scopes. Fudds frequently fuck up drilling and tapping. Gunsmiths put kids through college fixing shitty scope jobs.

OP here. Waiting on the background check to clear as I type this. From the serial # it looks like it's from '49 or '50. Blueing is worn in a few places and theres just a little wobble on the front handguard, but bore and action look beautiful. Thanks for your help boys.
>>34880270
Buy one made before 1964. Winchester went to shit after that. You should be able to date the rifle by looking up the serial number.

Nice, good job.

Forgot to say front sight hood is almost always missing. Hard to find one with matching blue.
>>34884389
what'd ya pay?
>>34885770
$600. More than I wanted but it was a gift to myself for completing an 18 month long project at work so I thought what the hell.

Pics incoming.

Let's try that again.

Meh, little high for a shooter but nothing to beat your self up over. congrats. Love these fucking guns.

I know that feel all too well. Good buy on the Henry. 357, by the way. They're awesome rifles
>>34886479
My wife's one and only gun is a .357 Henry. Beautiful rifle. Not a fan of the tube mag tho.
>>34886011
Where are your feet?
>>34886505
It takes some getting used to, but you can reload it pretty quick if you know what you're doing.
I think both tube and loading gate each have their pros and cons. I like all of the lever gun manufacturers but I have a soft spot for Henry for some weird reason. I have no idea why, I just really like 'em.
>>34880535
>made in America or not at all
>>34886583
Right, sorry.
>>34885993
You did all right. Pre '64. No scope holes? You will shoot far more than 600 dollars worth of ammo through her that's for sure. Shits expensive. Is a .30-30 correct?

Good job OP, welcome to the club. Congrats on joining the lever action master race. That bluing looks nice, not much wear for a 67-8 year old rifle. $600 is a little high for my tastes, but it's about average for a pre-64 nowadays.
My only suggestion would to be to put a little wood putty on the back of that crack in the handguard so it doesn't spread further (if it goes all the way through that is). Just be sure to only get it on the back so it doesn't show up from the outside. Numrich may still have front sight hoods, and with how intact that blue is it may match pretty easily. If it doesn't, it's really not too big of a deal.
