Precision Shooting General

The thread for talking about all things precise, from .17 HMR to 50 BMG

Old school belted magnum edition, since I just mounted a 6-24x50 on my hunting rifle, a Remington 700 Sendero SF II in 300 MAG FOR THE WIN.

how many inches is considered decent with irons at 100yrds. I can shoot maybe 5 moa with irons.
>>

This is /PSG/ Its sorta required to be accurate to some degree.
>>
>>34876519

I'd say you should be able to get 2" groups with a rifle that shoots 1 MOA using a magnified optic.

Has anyone here ever gotten good hits at a mile with a standard magnum round, ie 7mm Mag, 300 win mag, 264, etc?

I've got some load data that will JUST BARELY touch a mile with my 300 WM, if I can find a place to take the shot, I might try it.

Opinions on a tripod setup?

Really worth it over a set of good shooting sticks?

I've never tried one, they just seem like a niche hunting product.

Right? I'll try match ammo next time.

Would be easier if I had a QD high magnification scope to borrow from another fun.

I have a CHF 16" middy pencil barrel, and it's god damn accurate; easily under 1 MOA with hand loads and shooting VEEEEEERY slow.

I just got and haven't tried it yet. It's pretty sturdy and has a really good height adjustment range

Has anyone seen these new eotech scopes in meat space yet?

http://www.eotechinc.com/precision-rifle-scopes

They're the latest in imported Asian glass optics with US names stamped on them, SIG being the one before.

They're priced a little high for what they are, in my opinion. Vortex, SWFA, Burris, and Bushnell's Elite line seem to have this market segment on lockdown, I don't see Eotech making much of a splash. Their name doesn't hold much cache these days anyway.

>LRB Arms M14SA
>Sage EBR Mod 0 stock
>Primary Arms 4-14x44
>ModPod
>Good Iron muzzle brake
>Smith Enterprise op rod guide and spring

The way the scope is mounted now is super jankey but I'm waiting for some ultra low 40mm rings to put on a Sage DCSB I have. Havent tested it's accuracy in the build yet but I'm expecting it to be very good for an M14 at least.
>>
>>34876717
I'd personally probably just get a different name brand because of the name brand
>>
>>34876717

$1400 MSRP is a direct competitor with the Vortex Razor 1-6x, which is beyond proven and even SOCOM used.

If they priced it at ~$1k MSRP, $800 street, they'd have my attention.

How is this group at 200 yards? Rem700 (PPU Gold .308 Match) in AICS with pretty meh Nikon P-308, on bipod off of a bench. Definitely not amazing but I think I am getting better. Thinking about upgrading glass.
>>
>>34876967

Unless wind was near hurricane force when you were shoot, then not great, to be honest. I'd try some other brands of ammo; PPU has not been accurate in my experience.

Gold Medal Match is the gold standard for factory ammo, see what some 168 gr will shoot for you.

At 200 yds with an accurate rifle, you should be getting no more than 2.5" groups.
>>
>>34876419
Has anyone here tried the 40mm IOR scopes?

That sexy 40mm tube is calling to me. Plus the prospect of not having to lug my spotter scope and tripod with me.
>>
>>34876577
I have gotten 1.5moa 5 rounds with a savage 110 in 300winmag, i am more consistently a 2moa at 1000 shooter.

Using burger 210 vlds and 75.1 gn of H1000
>>
>>34877020

That 210 berger is exactly what I'm looking at, though I'd be loading IMR 4350 with a 68 gr charge.

I'm pretty competent at 1000 yds, but that load is RIGHT on the edge of trans sonic as 1 mile.

The real issue for me will be finding a place to shoot at that distance.

I think I found a spot where I can finally shoot long range and not get hassled by people
>pic related
>it's at ~13,000ft elevation
>only ~1 hour from my house
My 6.5CM only drops like 6.2mils at 1,000yds.

Fuck I better try it out before winter comes but humping my targets out there is going to be...fun.
>>
>>34876988
I'm on mobile and it flipped the image 90 degrees, this was when I was figuring out scope elevation adjustments for different kinds of ammo. It's actually low.

I'm still fairly new to precision shooting, but I am improving and it's just a matter of experimenting with shooting technique and ammo right now. Will order some Gold Medal Match to try that out
>>
>>34877042

That elevation will really benefit you.

The low air density will decrease drag on the bullet. You can probably put 20% on top of whatever data you have at sea level.

The upward slope I see in that picture could be a problem though. Do you have a rangefinder that will measure it for you?

I know my Bushnell CONX rangefinder will give you the deviation angle.

>>34877052

I noticed it was flipped. Trust the Federal Gold Medal Match--I have not found a rifle yet that doesn't like it.

If you're shooting for 1000 yds, the 175 gr FGMM 308 load is better, but make sure your rifle has a 1:10 twist rate. A lot of rifles in 308 have a 1:12 twist rate, and the 168 gr shoots a lot better in them.
>>
Are fixed magnification optics out of style? I want to find a USO ST-10 for my model 70 in .300 win mag. It's rugged enough to handle mountain hunting, and the controls are big enough to manipulate with gloves on.

On the other hand, I might go with a mid-tier Vortex just for the warranty. This model 70 is my hunting rifle, and that warranty will pay for itself if I lose my balance While packing out 100 lbs
>>
>>34877040
Ive seen people load the 210 with 78gr of h1000 but that seems stuoid high.

I saw pressure signs (bulging primers) at 77 so backed it down and found a good point.

Trans sonics is the issue as always.

You might want to try rotombo . You can get 2900+ fps using if and amax208 gn.

That's the start of where I have to hike out a bit, though there's some other areas. I'll have to position my stuff in a mountain side essentially; not exactly that one. There's one other guy on here that rode out there with me and he'll probably call me a fucking retard for even thinking of shooting out there but I think it'll be fun. Getting a range finder now will be something worthwhile for me; I think I'll do the Sig Kilo 2k but not positive.

I've been shooting at ~5800' already, but this will be a bit different.
>>
>>34877084
Fixed is still fine. But not as pooulat as the new hottness is ffp variables. And every manufacturer is dropping new ffp scopes.

That said. If i was buying another fixed. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another swfa 10x HD
>>
>>34877095
81 grans of rerumbo is a compressed load btw.
>>
>>34877084

Fixed is good if you want to save some dosh and still have good glass. SWFA has a bunch of great options, and the Bushnell Elite 10x is a great scope.

But, in my opinion, a fixed mag scope limits a rifle to being a range/bench queen. It is much less versatile than a FFP variable.

>>34877095

4350 has been a great powder, and I have 10+ pounds of it, so I'm in no hurry to change.

>>34877106

I'll push that CONX when it comes to rangefinders. It's really a great piece of kit. It'll even bluetooth to your phone.
>>
>>34877106
The kilo is nice .

but a trick ive learned, if your using metal targets paint them with a crome paint or attach reflective tape to them ( hvac tape or safety tape)

If your using a paper target, attach a signal mirror to the target stand, and angle it towards you. Or better yet a 18×18 sheet of polished metal that is slightly concave ( i used a scrap piece of light gage aluminum)

On matte targets i have found the max range of the kilo to be about 1100 yards depending on lighting .

4350 is a nice powdwr, and very economical compaired to other option for the 300wm.

I find it interesting that at the same pressure, the retombo eeks out 100fps more. ( but at 13 more grains of powder)

Worked up a load for my Rem 700 AAC-SD 308. Tested a few powders (pic) with good results on IMR 4064 and CFE 223. Win 748 got stupid so I zeroed with plinking loads rather than worked on groups.

.42 with 43.5 grains of 4064, CCI Primer and Hornady 168 grain amax.

Apparently Hornady discontinued the amax and went with eld. I picked up a box of elds and a box of ssts and loaded to the same specs to hopefully duplicate the results. The load test was backed up with a Chrono and then another set of 5 shots on 3 targets, 15 total.
>>
>>34877353
>Hornady discontinued the amax and went with eld
yea, I think the polymer tip was deforming and causing inconsistencies
I suppose you'd see it more on a 300RUM than a .308
>>
>>34877353
The amax 168 is still in production. You can order them from Midway and graffs.

The eld is a bettwr design for long range target, but the amax isnt a slouch

Where'd you read that they're (SE) Asian? I thought the selling point was that they were US made. Is it just the glass or something, assembled in US?

>>34877008
I had a 35mm, 3.5-18 second generation. One of the features boasted for the new gen was more elevation adjustment but since then the market has been saturated with high quality, mid-range optics with more adjustment, so it didn't age well.

I haven't used the newer 40mm tube IORs but what I learned from my 35mm is that rings are difficult to find and the scopes are H E A V Y. Holy cow. The 40mm ones even more so, and even harder to find rings for. I think that deserves more priority than 5 more MOA of elevation.

IOR glass is excellent though, that's their best feature imo.

Also why wouldn't you need a spotting scope anymore?
>>
>>34877516
They have upto 52x in the 40mm line.
They also ship with rings.

52x isnt practical for shooting but good enough to replace my 60x spotter
>>
>>34877516

>Where'd you read that they're (SE) Asian? I thought the selling point was that they were US made.

http://www.breachbangclear.com/eotech-is-jumping/

"Very clear, Japanese-made glass"

I've been tracking those eotech optics since before they dropped.
>>
>>34877353

Interesting results.

I actually used Win 748 for the past 6 years bc it meters so well in my turret press. I've had great results with it in 223, 22-250, and 308.
>>
>>34877538
If you've got that kind of money surely there are other options that tickle your pickle? Mine came with rings too, doesn't mean they'll be the right height or configuration for your setup. With a 40mm tube and big fat ocular, you're going to be further limited to where and how far forward/back you can mount it. Food for thought

>>34877560
Oh that's not something to drag the price down, a lot of great scopes use nihon glass. I put more stock in where they're assembled and warranty than anything.

They certainly appear to be good quality on paper. I'd like to inspect some.
