Can we have another Archery thread?

Yes

I have an 85lb draw longbow I bought from a pow-wow. It's served me well even though the sight is on the wrong side and the bottom limb cracked a few years ago.

I really need to build a shortbow or buy one from a pow-wow for me to use innawoods.

Compound bows are fucking gay. Real niggas use recurves made out of wood or composites.

One piece, Osage orange, 55lbs at 28. My current favorite. I also have a hickory thats a little larger but only comes in at 45. Theres notging more satisfying than bowyering.

Shot of the back. Its got a few character knots on the far end. Kinda wish it turned out a little stronger but with a D cross section and a few knots I didnt wanna push it. 55 is plenty good for anything that isnt protected by metal anyways.

Hunting with crossbows or compound bows and sitting in a stand for hours is gay as fuck. Ground hunting with traditional bows has a bigger learning curve but is much more practical.

Have you ever considered making your own bow? An osage orange bow with a backing of sorts (I recommend bamboo) can make a ridiculiusly strong flatbow, while still being sort of traditional.

>>34877727
That is a beautiful bow! Do you harvest your own wood? I've wanted to make a one-piece orange osage bow like this for a while but can't find a supplier that sells any with a straight enough grain.

While we're sharing, here's the first bow I made. Bamboo backed osage orange, 60" tip to tip, #45 at 28".

Nah i dont harvest my own. I usually buy staves on Ebay funnily enough. The thing with Osage is that its next to impossible to find one that doesnt have some degree of twist due to the nature of the tree and how it grows. Here you can see I'm clamping the stave into a form and hitting it with steam to straighten out a portion of the top limb where I had some lateral twist. I also used this technique to produce the recurves. You csn get away with a surprising amount of wavy/twisty limbs as long as the two tips line up straight thru the handle.

Why do people still use outdated junk when we have this stuff now?

Why do people feel the need to buy these tacticool compound bows when recurve and short boys have worked fine for 50,000 years.
>>
>>34881106
Because that junk worked fine for thousands of years and they can actually handle a high draw weight
>>
>>34881332
Shitting in a hole in your back yard works but don't you enjoy a nice bathroom with a toilet bowl.

>if a poo in loo disregard.
>>
>>34881346
Sure but just like old wood and steel guns have been made obsolete by plastic guns, compounds have surpassed old junk designs.
>>
>>34881106
Well, I'll definitely agree that compounds for the most part have surpassed old self bows and the like in MOST aspects, but only someone who isn't really into archery or a fool would say that they surpass them in ALL aspects.
For example, self bows like my osage bow require much less time and much less resources to create. They don't use fittings and glues that make them vulnerable to humidity changes. They don't use lots of moving parts that are prone to breakage and wear out quickly. They also take up a lot less space and weigh around a tenth or less of the weight of a good compound bow.
Furthermore, if you're innawoods and something goes wrong in your compound, even something minor like string breakage, you could be out of a weapon for a long time. Self bows are tolerant of strings you can make in the wild and are fairly easy to replace if you have a hatchet and a knife and the right skillset. Even more, compound bows usually hit higher draw weights that require better quality arrows to shoot without risking them breaking at release or during flight. A self bow can be tailored to what you have available. That said, compounds are absolutely a lot more accurate and more powerful(to a limit)
To close it out, I've seen lots of archers that use these compound bows that are a lot less accurate than I am with my traditional bows. A better bow doesn't necessarily make a better archer anyways.

I want to make my own bow but I'm nervous about fucking it up. I want to start with bamboo though, I've got a ridiculous amount of bamboo.
>>
>>34882079
Its not really that hard. I dont know much about bamboo but all it takes for a ggod bow is
>draw weight and length/shape dont exceed the limits of your material
>you can draw a straight line from nock to nock that passes through the center of the handle area
>You dont violate the single growth ring that composes the back of the bow(side facing target) OR if you cant do this that your bow is backed by something like linen or fiberglass
>The bow bends evenly throughout
If these conditions are met, your bow will work. You can drill holes in your limbs, your limbs csn wave out 2 inches midlimb, it doesnt matter, as long as these conditions are met your bow will work. Learning the limits of your wood and getting the bow to bend evenly without tillering down to a matchstick is the hardest part but all it takes is time and patience.
