Hi /k/,
Anyone able to ID this casing?
Found it while on a hike a while back.
I'll post more pics
On the bottom there seems to be a "3", "5", "S" and an "L" (not sure about the "L")

.30-06 wadded blank (can tell it was a blank from the extremely heavy crimp line in the neck and the rolled mouth).
Probably used for a salute. The military used .30-06 rifles for pretty much everything that required carrying a ceremonial rifle up until after Vietnam, and still uses them in niche situations. Organizations like the American Legion and VFW still use 03 Springfields and occasionally Garands for stuff like funeral details, which would be an occasion blanks are used.

Very cool!
Thanks for the detailed info.
I know there used to be an old fort where I found it.
Sounds cool that it was used as a salute.

Frankford arsenal circa
could be a salute blank, training blank, or rifle grenade blank.
My bet is with the korean war in swing it was a rifle grenade blank.
