I am an O-3 (Captain-equivalent, but not US military) personnel officer in a staff role for a deployable unit of approx 250 personnel. This includes a mix of logistics, communications and combat force personnel.

Basically, your people will fuck up at any given opportunity. Every afternoon, every weekend, every exercise, every post-exercise leave period, every Christmas and Easter.

Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and (presumably) marines get married (paperwork) then divorced six months later (more paperwork), they hit eachother in the nuts on exercise (paperwork), they say stupid shit to one of the fifteen females in the formation (paperwork), they get drunk and cut their arms open and go to hospital (paperwork). Anything you can imagine.

At the end of the day, their section/platoon/flight/division etc. commander ends up having to do that paperwork, and discipline them, and maybe try not to laugh, and try to defend them and get them out of jail or out of hospital or whatever.

For a young man fresh out of whatever training school, to get posted in to do this kind of job, ages you quickly and exposes you to a lot of experience in a very short period of time -- and that's before we start talking about actual deployment.

I was easy to work with, pulled my weight and took the knocks with a somewhat good banter... As a captain, that kind of evaporated within about 6 months and you quickly realise that if you aren't an absolute cunt every waking hour of the day making sure someone's not fucking up, its going to literally turn into Lord of the Flies meets Deliverance in about the time it takes you to turn your back. Actually deploying isn't as bad as at least then you just have to stop them getting shot and blown up more than usual, but most of them quickly knuckle down and find some focus. Or the great tradition of military peers tends to sort out the slackers without me ever having to deal with it.

I'm going the Academy route so it's basically guaranteed if I pass a flight physical which I should. The Air Force has 1000 pilot slots every year, usually about 500 go to Academy grads and the rest barring a couple will go to ROTC.
