Getting my first shotty soon. Both for home defense and maybe for hunting. Pic related, Mav88.

What's your opinion on it, and what accessories do you like adding to the gun?
>>
>>34869074
Don't get that. It's not bad at all but there's a better pacakage availible called the modsberg 500 field security combo.

It's 5+1 shot and comes with 2 barrels and interchangeable chokes. 18.5" security barrel and a ribbed 28" field barrel that you can use for trap shooting or hunting. Plus u can get it in wood which is sexy
>>
>>34869074
It's fairly nice to have Mossberg quality on a gun under $200 but if you get the model pictured for hunting you will be very disappointed and in some areas may be illegal.

Home defense would be ideal but keep in mind that if you load it with buckshot that there is no recoil reducer in the stock and it will kick like a mule.

No accessories needed, its a plain jane pump gun.

I was going to say this. This is what I did.

Then I just got new furniture from Numrichs, restained and refinished it, replaced the polymer trigger housing with the metal trigger housing, and replaced the polymer safety with the enhanced safety. Now I've got the 18" and 28" barrel and can use any 500 barrel I'd like.

>>34869120
In what area is hunting with a shotgun illegal?
>>
>>34869144
It's the round count. You might need a tube plug to limit the rounds you can carry. The OP's pic has an 8 round capacity.

I only added wooden furniture and a heatshield because I like the looks. Some people slap velcro on the side of their receiver and use shotgun cards for faster reloading. I'd go that route if I was serious about using my 590A1 as a HD gun over something else.

Just wanted to make a Public Service Announcement for this thread:

Mossberg > Remington

Thank you, that will be all.
>>
>>34869074
It'll work. If you want to start adding to a budget Mossberg then replace furniture. Maybe duct tape a flashlight to the end. A weapon light costs about as much as the shotgun. It doesn't need anything really unless you want to put a shell holder on it, but the odds of you needing 15 rounds of buckshot to hunt or stop jamal from crawling into your bathroom window is farfetched.
What you might want to do is get the security combo for that model that comes with a decent hunting barrel. The base is going to be a 18.5" cylinder bore that is not going to be great in the field.
>>
Wood furniture > plastic

On a shotgun at least.
>>
>>34869130
Mind telling me the what shell holder and light mount you have friendo? Looks sexy. Link or name
>>
Get a new 500 or standard 5 shot maverick or an old used 870
>>
>>34869395
I forget what the shell saddle is. The light mount is Elzetta though.
>>
>>34869420
Thanks. I'm more concerned about the light and mount. I have the same gun and am trying to set up for home defense. Are most lights compatible with it?

Mossberg have a shit load of models. Do most if not all the parts interchange? Could I get like a cheap/used fudd Mossberg and put faggy magpul furniture on it, shorter barrel and extended mag tube and all? I'm building an AR now so I don't have much money to drop on the exact gun I want so I plan to do what I want to it in time. Going back in forth to a sexy wooden furniture and magpul sounds nice
>>
>>34869474
That I'm not sure of. It'll depend on the mount and the light. I think it came with rubber and plastic pieces do fit smaller lights as well. Just make sure your light can handle the recoil.
>>
>>34869499
They make bullpup conversion kits for the mossb 500/90 and the mav if that's what you mean. Yes they do mostly interchange between the 500/90 and mav. Most of the difference between the 500 and the mav is the safety I think.
>>
>>34869669

I heard the front uhh pump thingy is pinned so to change you to have to change the pump bars. something along those words.

I didn't mean the bullpup conversation but that does sound neat as fuck Mainly wondering does it matter if I get if I get like a 535 or a 590 or a 500 hunting. Would I be able to change barrels and stocks and stuff?

Will go more indepth with my statements. I don't actually have a place to shoot my guns so I can only base it off technical knowledge and experience

I personally think the design of the mossberg 500 series design is superior to the 870, it was developed 10 years later and it shows.

The 870 has a riveted ejector mounted to the receiver. If it fails you will either need to send it back to Remington, or buy specialty tools as well as the new part. While the need to replace it is rare, it is a problem.

The mossberg design has a ejector that just screws into the side of the receiver and is easily user serviceable.

The 870 bolt only has one extractor, the mossberg design has 2, its a reliability enhancement mostly.

The mossberg's have a aluminum receiver, and the bolt locks into the barrel like ar15 type design. The aluminum receiver is lighter, but will wear quicker, the 870 bolt locks into the steel receiver. Durability vs weight is your choice.

870's have a soldered magazine tube, so if you want to replace due to damage or other reasons, you have to send it to remington to do it. Mossberg's are just threaded into the receiver, so you could replace it at home if you really want to.

The slide release on the mossberg's don't force you to move your grip up to hit it, unlike the 870's, especially easy if you are left handed with a mossberg.

The safety on the 870 is a cross bolt near the back of the trigger guard, the 500/590 has a tang safety which is ambi (bad with pistol grips though). The maverick 88's have crossbolt near the front of the trigger guard.

The 870 has the advantage regarding mag tube extentions since they just screw on, where as you are kinda stuck as is with the mossbergs. But if you don't have a mag tube clamp, the extension is a very good lever to damage the threading on the magazine tube, and cause the tube explode off the gun.

870's are really really long lived guns though,
>>
>>34869985
I've heard of 870's with very very high round counts. The mossbergs have nicer features, but if you shoot super high volumes of ammo, then a 870 is a better choice.

For a new gun, I would go with a mossberg series over a 870. But old 870's are just nicer guns than mossbergs, so I would prefer an old trade in police magnum or wingmaster over a new mossberg if I could only have one.

Really comes down to a matter of personal peference.
>>
>>34870022
the old wingmasters are magical, that's why they could coast for so long on reputation. The best and saddest part is you can find them for less than new 870 Expresses.
>>
>>34869985
>>34870022
Forgot about some other stuff.
The 870 is a old magnum trade in made in 1987, with walnut furniture. The left one is a maverick I bought for $175 when sports authority was closing (before I bought the 870) out of literal bordem, thought I was gonna do clays, but decided to use it for defensive purposes. Sold the field barrel for $100, bought another field barrel with a bulge near the choke for $35 on gunbroker, chopped it down to 20" In like $200 for the 870, $110 for the maverick. Probably $25 worth of accessories on the 870, shell cards and buttstock shell holders are handy and cheap.

I also forgot to mention the loading gate. On the 870 you have to push the loading gate up then feed the shells, where as the mossbergs have an open loading port. It is quicker and easier to load a mossberg vs a 870, plus you can't pinch your fingers on it.

I'm working on moving, but once I got some free time to do dumb shit again, I might mess around with the forend of the 88. Try to mount a rail in it, then just take some cheap flash light mount and light, then put a shell card and stock holder. Use it encase melanin enriched gentlemen try to hold midnight college bible study in my house, worst case be out of $150 for the gun.
>>34870058
I heard the new wingmasters are still fairly good, but why bother when you could probably buy at least 3 old wingmasters for the price of one new one (or old police/magnum models)

>>34869074
If you want to be able to use field barrels, you need to get a 5 shot tube model, the 8 shot maverick it too long to take those barrels.

get a shell card and buttstock shell holder and it should be fine.
>>34869499
maverick's have pinned forends, so you need the action tube to put a mossberg 500 one on and it would work. Some 500's have pinned forends too. Can't extend the tube on a mossberg. Better off just buying another shotgun instead of playing back and fourth switching, since it's not that much.
>>
>>34869985
>>The 870 bolt only has one extractor, the mossberg design has 2, its a reliability enhancement mostly.
If one of the extractor is broken on the Mossy, it won't eject, they work in pairs so it doesn't matter reliability-wise.
>>
>can't extend the tube on a Mossberg

Mossberg sells 8 round tubes with a 20 inch barrel through Brownells tho
>>
>>34869205
On everything tbqh.

Wood > Metal >>> plastic.

And this is coming from a glock lover.
>>
>>34870773
for all practical purposes you cant. unless you really want to spend 200 bucks to replace half of a 2-300 gun. instead of just buying another gun
>>
>>34871011

To get an 18.5 inch barrel it's worth
>>
>>34869176
The 8 round capacity doesn't come with a wooden dowel rod? I know the 6 round does.
>>
>>34871083
except in no way is an 18 inch barrel a extension on a moss 500. if anything its a reduction in capacity from the 20.
all the 18 inch barrels use the shorter magtube.
>>
>>34869074
Despite what people who don't own one will tell you, a Maverick 88 is an excellent shotgun for the price and can take a hell of a lot of abuse. I beat the shit out of mine and it still works flawlessly. Honestly if you had one side by side with a 500 and could somehow cover up the safeties, it would be hard to tell the two apart. The one thing about the Mav though is that some parts like the fore end are not swappable without going through a giant pain in the ass and removing a ton of shit, so if that's important to you just get a cheap 500 since they're practically the same gun. I got my 88 for like $150 practically brand new off a guy who wanted to get an 870 instead about 3 years ago, and I basically use it as a workhorse shotgun for whenever I don't want to dirty up my others.

Unless you get the fun for like free, it's not worth it.

Assuming you find one for lke $150, you still need the tubes. Why not just buy one of these when the get back in stock. Or why not just buy a factory 20" maverick 88 for solely defensive purposes, and pick up another mossberg/870/ithaca for $300 or less for a hunting gun?

Get a 590A1 You'll eventually buy one anyways if you start the bug with a 590A1

The metal trigger guard is worth it.

honestly I'd even suggest a 930 JM pro if you want one for hunting, sports and self defense.
>>
>>34871102
It does not. It is usually marketed as a "security" pump gun.
>>
>>34871307
meant to say if you get a Mav88, you'll eventually get a 590A1.

if you can't make the jump from $250 to $600...dude wait a month and save your money...or get a credit card.
>>
>>34871329
>>34871232
It's more like a $200 to $400 jump

assuming you catch it when it gets back in stock
>>
Get a 500. Attach some velcro tape to the receiver and stick a shot card on it. Put one of those clip-on fibre optic sights and attach a light somewhere.
>>
Interesting thread. Been eyeing this exact shotgun for my first scattergat. I own other things for HD and whatnot, but the added capacity and aesthetic of this one, and the super low price makes it attractive. I already have ARs and other plinkers, so this doesn't need to be high end or top of line/brand prestige. All the reviews I've read and watched have nothing but praise and the aftermarket compatibility is a huge plus. It's either one of these or my first handgun. This is under half the price of any handgun I want.
>>
>>34869074
Get a sling and a good flashlight. I wouldn't tacticool a maverick 88 since you might as well just save for a mossy at that point. A flashlight is a good investment since it can fit any gun you upgrade to in the future though.
>>
how much would a pre-2007 pre-Freedom Group 870 police magnum go for?
>>
>>34869176
Does anybody actually care about that though? Like how many people have been fined for that bullshit?
>>
>>34871720
I bought mine for $170 before fees.
>>
>>34869110
Do this OP. I bought a Maverick 88 for my first gun and I regret it every day. It still goes boom and the resale value is shit so I keep it around anyways but saving a few more pennies and buying Mossberg 500 or even a 590 is a better choice all around.
>>
>>34871726
Fish and game laws are srs business in the US esp with water fowl. Hunters usually abide by the rules for good reason.
>>
>>34869074
Don't shoot it at an indoor range like an asshole.
>>
>>34872015
It just seems like the whole putting a pistol brace to your shoulder thing, or 922r. Yeah they're laws but no one really gives a shit.
>>
>>34872112
No, it's has nothing to do with the atf, It's not like that. Game wardens will check for this specifically if you're hunting water fowl. 2+1 is max.
>>
>>34872112

>>
>>34872238
I could easily take a chopstick out too
>>
>>34872222
No. hunting shotguns with 5rd mags are sold with a wooden dowel in the mag so only 2 shells can be loaded. The rod can be removed and replaced very simply.
>>
>>34872262
>be pwning birds with my 870
>see game warden coming in
>quickly insert government faggotry
>game warden fucks off
>>
>>34872258
the dowel is inserted in the front of the magtube you cant take it out with out disassembling the gun
yeah its easy as fuck to remove the barrel but its not something you could instantly install and remove.
snapcaps would be rack this bitch a few more times then reload for a full cap shotgun.

>>
>>34869110
This is what I did. I was eyeing the 88 for a while, but then I waited and saw the 500 with the barrel combo go on sale. I'll be picking it up next week.
>>
>>34869074
I have a Maverick 88 I bought with an 18.5" barrel, that came with the full stock and a Mossberg pistol grip. I use it with just with the pistol grip for STALKER feels, and it's a lot of fun if not exceptionally practical in that format. What I love about the Maverick with a pistol grip is it's extemely compact and light, I took it with me exploring a big washout in my local woods and really appreciated how handy it was for that.

So that's one way to have fun with a Maverick, it's never failed to load, eject or fire so I have to give it props for that. Additionally because I've played with more Mavs than 500's I like the safety location a little better, I was never overly enamored with the tang safety.
>>
>>34874081
Marincoat implies you want corrosion resistance, so you get the composite trigger group and safety. Corrosion resistant and self-lubricating.

For what it's worth, the safety on mine is beefy. Plus they now use a one-way screw to discourage idiots from fucking with the safety. My understanding is that 99% of the safety breakage is gorillas over tightening that screw.
>>
>>34871354
"out of stock"

They'll fix that price when it's in stock.

Take the Mav88 forend off,its the Achilles Heel of the design. Replace it with a Mossberg 500 forend, made of steel and any forend handguard your little heart desires.
