If it's your first weapon, i'd recommend a Ruger 1022 or a Mossberg 500.

Both can be found really cheap either new or on consignment.

Personally, I think everyone should have a 1022, just a fun plinking gun to get you started on the hobby of shooting. After that, a 12ga for home defence. Then finally a compact pistol for CCW.

Then maybe a fun gun of your choosing to explore your personal tastes.

Mossberg and Remington pump action shotguns typically retail around $300-$350 new depending on which one you get. Pawn shop sometimes sell them used for $100-$200 but do you really trust pawn shop firearms?
Either way, pump action shotguns are incredibly versatile and serve every need besides concealed carry.
