Why is the Ruger 10/22 considered the best starter rifle?
Reasonably-priced, cheap to shoot, good to learn fundamentals with.

Not to mention how customizable it is. It's not quite on the level of the AR but it's close enough to compare it which says a lot. Don't like your 10/22 anymore? Dress it up as a g36 or an m1 Carbine. Any .22 is a good starter rifle really.

Previous posters are correct and I both own and enjoy my 10/22. However, it is not the be all and end all of 22 LR rifles. Marlin 60s have a good rep and 22 Henrys are an excellent upscale option if you like lever guns. One could also go with an older pump-action. For children, I would strongly recommend a break or bolt action to make it easier to be sure that there is no round in the chamber.

What these guys said.

cheap ammo, reasonably priced, low kickback allows for a comfortable day of shooting, teaches you recoil managment, if shtf it can be used for critter hunting, and they suppress amazingly

I like how you post a 10/22 thread with the pic being of a PPS-50 instead... Nice!

What can he say, it's a hell of a shotgun.
Fun and cheap to shoot and can teach good trigger control
Also fun to modify with lots of aftermarket options
Cheap to shoot, not a bolt action, highly customizable, not a bolt action, Is light and compact, not a bolt action, can kill pretty much all small game, not a bolt action, low recoil, not a bolt action, and high rate of fire because it's NOT A FUCKING BOLT ACTION SINGLE SHOT PIECE OF SHIT LIKE THE REMSHIT MODEL 514 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I JUST WANT TO SHOOT MORE THAN ONCE.

Because people on gun forums repeat what they've read over and over. Marlin 60 is just as good. So is the Mossberg Plinkster.

Can confirm plinkster. I like mine way more than my 10/22
I bought a 10/22 takedown, and it's the only gun I own that I haven't taken apart yet. For some reason, it's intimidatingly difficult to strip and clean. Maybe I'll watch a video and learn how to do it. It's only got maybe 400 rounds through it.
My grandpa bought me one for Christmas when I was 12. Obviously my dad kept it until we went to the range but it was "mine". I still have it and still love to shoot it.
>Cheap
>Cheap to shoot
>Reliable
>Huge aftermarket
>.22LR = no recoil, good to teach younger/newer shooters that are intimidated by firearms
As mentioned pretty much all .22s are a solid choice for a first rifle, but the amount of customization for the 10/22 makes it my first choice to recommend to others. Once you expand your collection it's still fun to plink around with on the cheap and let friends shoot.

You should make it an m1 carbine version
Pretty good thread on it https://desuarchive.org/k/thread/34837788/#34837788
