Local gander mountain is selling an "unknown" straight pull bolt action rifle for 150 bing bongs. It's actually an M1888.
I'm considering going back and buying it. Maybe asking them to sell it as a broken gun since they don't know what it is and it's in pretty bad shape but rifling is still very strong. Is it worth 150? What kind of super rare ammo does this shoot? Is it available?

Do it. Haggle if you can, and remind them there's no info about it.

how does the bore look
>that revolver in the case
jesus fuck, you certainly cannot buy taste.

Bore was a little frosty but rifling was strong. I'm mostly worried about ammo.

It's either 8x52 or 8x50. Nobody makes either and it's a handloading only proposition.
For 150 though you can always keep it on hand as trading fodder.

You'll have to make your own ammo. Dies, brass and bullets are available. You should be able to find a comparable action and chambering to get load data.
for $150 buy it, always good to save something from obscurity and appreciate it
Looking at your pic OP it looks a lot like a 1886, not an 1888.

Thanks guys but I'm not going to be able to dive into reloading for a while so this is a deal breaker for me. Been looking for a milsurp bolt action but with more available ammo. If anybody here is interested this is the palm beach gardens gander.

x52 is still in production. It was a pretty common sporter cartridge after the M1895 and M1888 was phased out and put in civilian hands.
It's definitely worth 150. I'd go ahead and buy it if you can confirm the cartridge. One is out of production and unnobtainium the other is still out there but limited. Look up which one, in case I am wrong.

Free money right there if you get it cheap
Goddamnit OP that's one of the guns on my list, been looking for a a reasonably priced example for years now. some guys have all the luck. I'd buy it off of you for 250 if you lived anywhere in the northeast within driving distance
