I've tested it with my friends using airsoft. It definitely works to get the gun from them, but if you don't do it perfectly you have a good chance of taking a bullet.The trick is to make sure you quickly pivot completely out of the way. Also you should try and drive the gun so it's pointing as far away from you as possible. If it is a semi auto, grab the slide. It will stop it from cycling, then they can only shoot you once. It's a really risky maneuver, but it's easily executed with a bit of practice. Definitely would not recommend doing it unless you have no other options.

I'm spinning yarn here but I think you can use sniping as a defensive measure. If youre putting accurate fire onto an enemy unit it is likely to force them to:
a. Stop and fight
b. Find another route
c. Commit support assets to try and kill you

In all circumstances you're denying them freedom of action as well as removing support assets from other parts of the battlefield.
