There is a 5.56mm version called the microgun which is just usable standing. 5.56mm is also one of the least expensive cartridges out there, meaning you can both afford to buy the gun and the ammo for it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheinmetall_120_mm_gun
>Originally the gun had an EFC barrel life of ~1,500 rounds,[26] but with recent advances in propellant technology the average life has increased even further.

120mm gun barrels are designed to withstand heat. With 12 barrels (a necessary amount for a 120mm gatling gun) firing at a speed of 150 RPM (nearly 3 per second) would mean 1 round every 5 seconds per barrel, a completely manageable rate even for long bursts. This could be accelerated to 300 or even 600 RPM for short and very short bursts.
>>
>>34868105
In comparison the GAU-8 has a barrel life of around 2500 rounds per barrel and fires at a variable rate of fire up to 3900 RPM for 1 second bursts, despite the 30mms' impressive size.
>>
>>34867549
Sharif don't like it.
>>
>>34860208
>>34860215

so, we take some Abrams gun barrels and through unholy cybermancy create a feed mechanism to turn them it to a rotary gun needing a small power plant to power the electrical mechanism, have the reliability of the
T-72 auto loader and is prone to overheating.....

1.) what's the worse that could happen ?

2.) where this thing could be mounted ?
>>
>>34868125
1:) The barrels catastrophically overheat due to a technical miscalculation/glitch, warp, explode and ignite the ammunition supply causing damage to it's mounting.

2;) The M61 Vulcan fires a cartridge weighing ~260 g and itself weighs 112 kg.
The GAU-8 fires a cartridge weighing ~700g and itself weighs 281 kg.

A 120mm APFSDS round weighs 19 kg. Using the scaling factors from the smaller gatling-type guns, this gun would weigh anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 kg.

Land-based and ship-based systems would have no trouble handling this, but if a plane is to carry it, a C-130 has a payload of 19,000 kg and a B-52 has a payload of 31,000 kg.
>>
>>34868125
As for power supply, the GAU-8 uses two 77hp hydraulic motors to power it up to 3900 RPM. This 120mm monster would most likely require a 6000+ hp engine to power it up to similar speeds based on the weight of the barrels and projectiles. However this is not necessary due to the lower rate of fire, and a 3000 hp engine should definitely suffice to rotate the barrels and feed the gun. Such engines can weigh as little as 700 kg.
>>
>>34868169
So we need an AC-5...

Aside from the obvious concerns like recoil, weight, cost, and nothing in existence worth shooting with it, sadly it's impossibru.
Tank guns need the barrels replacing after a few hundred shots. The immense forces warp, wear and scour the barrel. The little doodad on top of the front of the barrel on pic related helps measure this warping. The FCS can compensate up to a point, but eventually the barrel needs replacing. Really bent barrels can make rounds asplode.

Sorry, pic. This is one of the drawbacks to 55 calibre guns, long barrels create more force and need replacing faster.

>pure fucking awesome
>>
>>34868169
For a practical rate of fire that won't destroy the cannon barrels, you wouldn't need that much power. Mount it to a 1500 horsepower turbine engine via a 3 speed transmission.
