Anyone here own firearms and live in an apartment? How do you handle worries over things such as overpenetration? I want a shotgun for defense but I don't want anything to overpenetrate the walls and hit my neighbors.
>>
Try not using a firearm that launches a wrecking ball, faggot.
5.56 75/77gr OTM/OHP/TAP exists.
>>
>>34858845
I already have a handgun in 9mm, JHP won't overpenetrate, I want another gun.
>>
>>34858853
Then get an AR and research which bullet doesn't overpenetrate
I know 55s do a good job, but I'm sure HPs would do better

You can literally build ARs for under $400
>>
>>34858874
LGS told me I couldn't get a rifle that doesn't overpenetrate.
>>
>>34858878
They lied

Fuck your neighbors, you don't owe them shit.

Honestly just set your priorities to focus on purchasing a house/land at whatever the cost.

Renting is the ultimate form of cuckoldry.

>tying yourself down to one place effectively permanently
A lot of us are still figuring out where we want to be, or aren't able to be there yet.
>>
>>34858878
He was right, even 55gr rifle rounds fly through drywall and studs like paper. Ignore the ar fags that are convinced their bullets magically stop after hitting any level of resistance because it's wishful thinking. Sheetrock isn't going to make a jhp stop, it's a grade harder than paper mache. 00 buckshot will too. If you want buckshot in an apartment #4 is the safer option. Your best option is to hit what you shoot at which shouldn't be impossible 10 feet away in a hallway.
>>
>>34858999
#4?

>Literally throwing away money every month instead of paying into an appreciating asset
>Tying yourself down to one place effectively permanently
>Being this clueless on house ownership and the housing market

When I was in my late 20's I moved to a new house almost every year, it's not that bad anon. Your only excuse is a lack of funds or timid immaturity.
>>
>>34859014
That's a nice story.
>>
>>34858999
Fly right through like paper, huh? Ever consider the difference in energy the round carries afterwards or why the FBI and LEO use ARs over shotguns and SMGs these days, fudd?

A small, light bullet that wounds with speed is less dangerous because it dumps that speed in the wall, what comes out the otherside is less dangerous because durr, physics.

But no, I'm sure you, basement dwelling faggot, knows better than modern doctrine on building clearing while minimizing collateral damage learned through tens of thousands of real world uses performed by LE on the Federal and local level.

No, really, I'm sure you know better.
>>
>>34858999
Of all actually good defensive rounds, 5.56 penetrates the least
I didn't believe it until I saw the 15 different tests proving it
Go be ignorant somewhere else slavaboo
>>
>>34859014
So you lost your ass on closing costs and fees?
Nice analogy buddy

>inb4 nuh uh I totally made money

Not how buying a house works
>>
>>34859040
>So you lost your ass on closing costs and fees?
Yeah man, literally just over 1% of the entire value of the house just fucking broke my ass.

Spoken like a man who's gone through the buying process many times.

Enjoy throwing away your monthly money while enjoying your neighbor's dogs and loud footsteps in your pseudo-halfway house.

Also, with the enormous bullshit people who own acres of land go through with a defense shooting, I wouldn't even dream of it in an apartment complex.
>>
5.56 is actually really good for apartments for this reason
the light, high velocity bullets tend to fragment on walls (as long as you aren't getting increased barrier performance ammo) whereas shotguns slugs/pellets and handgun projectiles tend to stay together and penetrate more

but, the reality is that any loading that is powerful enough to penetrate 12" of ballistic gel and 4 layers of heavy denim will also penetrate one or more layers of drywall without stopping

try to find a firing lane in your apartment that you are unlikely to hit anyone else
maybe straight through the door will go directly into another apartment, but a hallway ends at an exterior wall
that and practice enough that you reduce the likelihood of missing

if you're still uncomfortable, there is frangible ammo available in many calibers at the cost of reduced terminal performance
>>
>>34858878

>>
My rifle doubles as a spear.
>>
>>34859113
This. I watched the lower of my local mom and pop store try to sell an over priced AR to a 20somthing guy.

Struggled for about 7 minutes trying to figure out how to drop the bolt with the release paddle on the left side of the rifle. Seven minutes.
>>
>>34859106
>try to find a firing lane in your apartment that you are unlikely to hit anyone else
you mean find an angle that's safe?

my front door is steel and a large portion of the walls have cupboards and counters in front of them since my apartment is tiny so hopefully that would stop a jhp 9mm round
>>
>>34858999
I mentioned 75/77gr specialty loads SPECIFICALLY because they fragment to fuck faster than you can say "terminal ballistics" and lose lethality in as few as two layers of drywall, half the stopping threshold of the slowest 147gr JHP. It's not that the bullet stops and drops, it's that it grenades to the point it can do no damage. Inversely, this is also bound to do fuck tons of damage to the bast are you hit with them.

Buckshot of all sizes is effectively a slug at indoor ranges and should not be used at all.
>>
>>34858831
Birdshot. If it's a regular sized apartment it's probably not going to have any distance longer than 30 feet so you can still take someone down.
>>
>>34859161
Anything smaller than #4 shot is a bad idea.
>>
On top of the normal shit you'll get hit with in a defense-shooting scenario, you'll likely also get hit with gross negligence due to the high number of random strangers in close proximity.

This is regularly negated in classical home defense scenarios due to "muh property" basically.

Your best route would be to check with your landlord concerning those laws, of course that could always pop up red flags and may lead to more shit especially your landlord telling you flat out "no you can't do that."

But really in modern america it's generally less trouble to just get shot and have your shit stolen, especially if you have insurance.

Lol GG leftists, well played.

>>
How much would buckshot overpenetrate? When i lived in an apartment that's what i kept for home defense.
>>
Any round that will have a desirable effect on the target will overpenetrate. There's no getting around it; although the degree of overpenetration varies. This risk has to be overcome by thinking tactically about shot angles and techniques to change those angles, e.g., changing shooting positions
>>

I have an AR with a WML and an Aimpoint PRO, but for HD I use a USP45T with WML. The only reason is because of how odd my townhouse is setup, it's very narrow with a switchback staircase in the middle that makes an awful choke point, but my point is that the place is so narrow that my 16 inch AR is just too hard to move around.

However, I'm planning on building a pistol AR with a brace to get around this problem. I'd rather hit them with 77gr 5.56 than 230gr JHP .45. What barrel length with be best for this? I see 8 inch and 10.5, what would be better and what ammo would go best for them?
>>
>>34858831
Birds hot and hollow points.

I live in a *decent* complex in houston, and I'm not worried at all. But I also try and keep myself aware of where I'm pointing when making ready with my defense rounds.

>>
>>34858831
Normally id be happy to wade through a ballistics shitswamp but im in no mood.

OP, disregard the opinions of anybody who recommends:

>Shot size smaller than #1 plated buck. Must be plated.
>LOL 5.56 TOTES FRAGMENTS WHEN IT HITS ANY DRYWALL LOL SOMEBODY SAID THAT ONE TIME

They both work some of the time but are horribly unreliable. No ammo that offers adequate penetration is going to be stopped by a reasonable amount of drywall. Focus instead on accuracy and learning to call your shots. Also keep in mind that injuries let alone deaths from even complete misses are rare when compared to the frequency with which firearms are discharged in suburban or urban environment.
>>
>>34858831
For shotguns, #8 birdshot at fairly close ranges is basically a slug. It doesn't have the distance to spread out and will hit someone like a truck but very quickly disperse on impact with walls.
For your 9mm there is high impact/low recoil ammo that can be found with frangible projectiles. These will very quickly break apart on impact with anything.
>>
>>34862550
this anon is full of shit
>>
>>34858920

This. You could load a shotgun with Skittles and blow someone's head off at indoor ranges.
>>
>>34858831
carry a spit ball gun, anything that doesn't over penetrate wont penetrate the bad guy deep enough.

Best bet is to place strategic bookshelves to slow the bullet down.

Pistol rounds will over penetrate just as bad as select 5.56 or 7.62x39 loads.

A good HD rifle load will have similar penetration to pistol rounds.

>>
>>34858831
No. 4 buckshot. The bigger shot and slugs are what are more likely to blow through walls.

I personally plan to charge intruders with my Kukri with the aim of crippling their weapon arm. This will allow my trained cat strike at their testicles and run off into the night with them (good luck finding him, he's jet black). The coup de gras is paint bucket of cat shit that I shall clock them with and then force over their head. Naturally I will be buck naked.

Why? 3/4 of the rooms would be empty, and the others barely used. If you don't have a family there's no real reason to want one. You can also buy condos, you don't have to rent.

It's about appreciating assets vs. throwing your money in a garbage can, not need or want.

You will be financially much better off if you purchase a house (or condo as you say), granted you have enough money to purchase the house and have about 20% of the house's price in reserve to cover any bullshit.
