Alright, /k/, it's time to redpill me on the Arisaka.

The usual gun show I go to typically only has 2-3 Arisakas in the whole lot, but the last time I went there were about 20 or so that I saw, most of them with mums intact for $300-$400. One guy explained to me that the WW2 generation that brought them back is dying out and a lot of them are going into trade circulation because of it.

I've always casually wanted an Arisaka for my collection, but with the variety that seems to be available now, I'm really considering putting in the cash for it.

I saw type 99s, navy trainers, carbines, etc all with different types of markings and some with woodburned Japanese on the stocks. Is there any type of Arisaka in particular I should go for? Something that would be decent quality with mum intact but nothing so valuable or rare that I would be hesitant to shoot it every now and then.

Arisaka thread.
>>
Like all milsurp, they're cool to have because of all the history behind them. Get one if you love that history, but keep in mind that you won't shoot it a lot because ammo for the Arisaka is rare and expensive even when you can find it.
>>
>>34851366
Get one with the dust cover and monopod intact if possible.

So, I technically don't own an arisaka, but, I did use the reciever and bolt off one to make that. Chambered in 7x57. Thing drives tacks at 200m with the old peep sights I took from my grandpa's parts bin. I personally think it looks good and as a plus, it is really light weight.

I actually just finished restoring my Type 38. Mines a lil rough considering it sat in a garage for 50 years and survived a pineapple grenade that killed the nip who originally used it.

Should i save my shekels for a type 2 paratroop rifle?
>>

Longs ones with bayonets.
>>
>>34851366
Do some research on factory markings to find the flavor you want and use the serial number/visible parts to figure out how late in the war a rifle was to fit your liking. Do you want an early war trophy piece with airplane sights and monopod? Or prefer late war last ditch with a more rough personality. Paratroopers are neat and very portable but expensive. Long type 99s are also rare and expensive but the longer rifle is seen as slightly better. Scoped arisakas are cool as fuck but Good luck finding one. I avoid ones without mums as they lose a lot of the history in eyes. Arisakas are fantastic rifles and arguably one of the best bolt actions of ww2, it's up to you on what you want as there is a lot of variety.

If you don't like the type 99 or its varients you could go with a type 38 but they are technically inferior earlier rifles that cost about the same so make of that what you will.

Avoid trainers as they are garbage and half of the time not even rifled. The were used to teach japanese school children how to march and how to hold a weapon, not to actually shoot. Also if you buy a sporterized arisaka you will bring great dishonor to the emperor. Don't do it.

Bayonets are an accessory you simply must get if you choose to buy an Arisaka. It would be a shamfur dispray if you didn't. Once again different factory markings offer different flavors. Find one to your liking. Almost all Japanese bayonets of this time period are interchangeable as well.
>>
>>34857783
I should also mention that all Arisakas are of the same usability In shooting. A last ditch rifle will shoot as good as an early first run. Only the aesthetic and ease of life features were skipped out on.
Buy a last ditch for plinking (hope you find ammo as it can be scarce) if you are worried about damaging a nicer one

Dumbshit, ammo is not rare or that expensive, Midway has it and many other online retailers have it also, google it.

I recommend getting a type 99.
The round is much more capable with ballistics similar to a 308.
The Type 99 is slightly more balanced, but this may be my opinion.
If you want to get into actually reloading for it, as I highly suggest as 7.7 Jap is rather expensive you can very easily form brass from 30-06.
And the Type 99 has friggin Anti Aircraft sights.

Or you can just buy ready made PPU brass.

That brass cost more than most other caliber factory ammunition tho, maybe Im just being poor.
>>
>>34864314
Where are you finding most milsurp calibers for cheaper than $29/50?

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1016838844/prvi-partizan-reloading-brass-77mm-japanese-bag-of-50

Not to mention PPU brass has a very long life to it, AND you save time because you don't need to form the cases from other brass.

I just resized 50 .30-06 cases, ups delivers the bullets tomorrow. After four years of owning this thing I will shoot it!

It holds a special place in my heart as my grandpa helped me put it together while he was still around. I personally don't feel it was bubba'd as I tried to keep it tasteful while making something practical for short range ranch work. The 18" barrel might have been a bit short though.

How rare are Arisakas with mums intact vs mums ground out? Does it make the price jump up a lot?

That mum isn't intact. It was overstamped for when it was taken out of Imperial service. You better not have ruined a Russian or British WWI contract one. They all had those same overstamps.

>>34867930
They aren't rare at all. About half have them intact so they only increase the price by about $25 or so unless it's some super rare variation, or super pristine original condition.
>>
>>34868514
I dunno if it was or not. The original barrel was shot to shit, and the stock wasn't any better. So as a result, I made it what it is now.

So you took something with some collector's value (or an extremely lot of value if it was that) and made it into something that has no value? You're the exact reason why everyone hates bubba. They don't know, nor care to know what they have, but still have to ruin it.

And FYI, Arisakas have Metford rifling. The rifling wasn't "shot to shit."
>>
>>34869895
When I say shot to shit, I mean pitted and corroded to the point where it could barely hit the broad side of a barn. The rifle was my grandpa's and we know exactly where it came from. He was more than alright with the route I took to get it up and running, he even helped. I keep all my other rifles that are working properly in original condition, this was the only one that was modified to make it work.

Where did it come from?
>>

>>
>>34870558
Mail order catilog post war. Don't know if they had WWI contract ones, but I highly doubt it.
>>
>>34870918

Just because it came from a mail order catalog a few years after the war doesn't mean you wouldn't have had something valuable on your hands, especially 50 years later.
>>
>>34871247
At most, it would be worth $200, if I'm lucky as it was in poor to fair shape (if I'm being generous). In its current configuration, it is worth about $350 (at least what the LGS offered me), and it actually works. Plus sentimental value. If I want an unmodified collector, I have literally everything else in my grandpa's collection now.

I can buy 3 bubba'd Arisakas for that much.
>>

This >>34873949

The value of a collector's rifle doesn't go up when you bubba it. Most Arisakas in my area go for $400-$450 unless they're bubba'd, in which case you'll get $200 at most.

You remind me of those people who throw their Norinco SKS into a Tapco stock and try to resell it for $700.

>>
>>34854111
What all did you do to restore it? I just picked up a Type 38 and the stock is in bad shape, not to mention the thing was a rust rod when I bought it. Nothing I've done has been able to get the deep pockets of rust out.
I really want to touch up the stock as well, there's practically no finish left on it, but I really don't want to be bubba.
>>
If memory serves, the stocks are made of Sumac. Seems I heard stories of people sanding down the stocks and getting poison sumac in the lungs from the dust.
