is the whole "your chest has to be bigger than your hips" thing real or just a meme?
what advice would you give to someone out to buy a good gambeson? theyre cheap enough i think i could afford one without much saving but at the same time i dont want shit.

>is the whole "your chest has to be bigger than your hips" thing real or just a meme?
i don't know what you're talking about
>what advice would you give to someone out to buy a good gambeson?
buy whatever the german larpers use. they actually beat the shit out of each other. pic related
where are you from /K/omrade? What's the armor for exactly?
The absolute cheapest armor that I've found on the internet that ISN'T one of those terrible indian made replicas on eBay is this guy here. I don't know how historically accurate the armor is but it looks a hell of a lot better.

If you're in Europe, this site has some good quality replica armor as well for around €3000 or so.

This. Invest in a good tailored arming jack or gambeson, or your armor will just beat the crap out of you.
This is the absolute top-of-the-line armor manufacturer from what I've read. Prepare to spend at least $15,000.

i made a chainmail shirt in high school. unrivited using 5mm diameter rings of galvanized steel. got the gage i wanted as wire used a lathe to twist into a tight 5mm coil remove the coil and cut turning it into 100s of steel rings. start linking, look up link patterns for joints, did a tight weave let my friend charge me with a 18" bayonete after testing with a stab. hurt, a lot, no penetration, no deformation of the rings struck.

my understanding is that off the shelf plate is basically retard tier, because plate armour HAS to be fitted to do its job properly
>>34850873
but where from? im in the UK btw
>>34850792
memes and HEMA related stuff. see above for location.

iirc shadversity said that body proportions matter when it comes to gambeson tailoring, and that it was common for medieval tailors to refuse to serve a customer whos hips were wider than his chest. i assume there would be good reason for such a policy.
lots of idiots with more money than sense beat the shit out of each other in armour though, i want something thats the real deal, not made to keep idiots with maces from injuring each other.
>>34851342
i find it hard to believe you survived a running stab with a bayonet with nothing but shitty unrivveted mail to protect you.
>>34850115
hhhnnngg those knuckle protectors
>>34851394
Only the really top of the line ones, there were also cheaper off shelf armor made for poorer knights. But if you really want proper plate armor fitted to your body, then you're going to need a LOT of money. Lindybeige was able to raise over $20,000 on Patreon to get one made for himself.

fuck, i didnt realise it cost him 20k
im not thinking full high medieval plate as i am a nice coat of plates, a suitable helmet, and whatever goes well with a coat of plates

Brigandine is so pretty.
>>34851616
i want one of these made with just straight brown boiled leather
>>34851584
Is there a specific time period you're after? There's a nice set of infantry half armour here from the 16th century for £785, this was the type of mass manufactured armor for regular foot soldiers

>>34851637
pls no
>>34851616
isnt it just? i inquired about the costs of one producer of the stuff earlier, and they said £1.1k is more or less what they charge for good stuff made with hardened steel plates. stuff weighs between 8 and 10kg, and mobility isnt too bad once theyre broken in apparently.
>>34851637
why would you want boiled leather on a brigandine?
>>34851647
i find the stuff that was brought out at the beginning of widespread adoption of plate armour to be particularly appealing, both aesthetically and functionally, bare plate just looks dull to me.
also, i would rather have something lesser of higher quality, than buy off the shelf shite for an order of magnitude less than what the pros charge.

unrivetes mail was preferred by many factions in the past. Circassians prefered it because if a musketball penetrated it would not send the rivetes into the wound. "poorly wrought" british chainmail with its large links could "fall asunder" under its own weight. source, archeological journal Vol. 23 of the Royal Archeological institute of London.

Can I play?
>>34851667
pretty armor is stupid
>>34851675
because i want it to look plain and durable
>>34851707
all boiled leather coating is going to do is to make damn sure that any oncoming blows get stuck heading in your direction, giving you all the negatives of boiled leather armour with none of its benefits. if anything you would want boiled leather underneath the plates to add a layer of resistance to percussive attacks without getting in the way of the plates ability to let blows glance off them.
>>34851689
then why does every person i ever hear talk about it say that it isnt worth the fucking metal its made with?
if were talking age of the musket, were outside the bounds of effective mail armour to begin with. ive also heard some real fucking bullshit spouted by historians who really should know better, so id need to know the context of that statement to see how meaningful it is.
>>34851798
it was a primary source of the 1600's interviewing an infantryman. the infantry man reports that a musketball may even bounce off the mail. The source talks about the ring diameter and weight of the shirt being nearly twice the weight of the unriveted. You can talk all the shit you want, i made my chainshirt using superior materials than the iron equivalent and it performed just as well as the iron equivalent. By best guess is your armorsmith friends aren't looking at historical artifacts for inspiration?
This guy makes some really professional armor sets

No it wasn't. Riveted mail is fucking useless.
>Circassians
One is not many.
>"poorly wrought" british chainmail with its large links could "fall asunder" under its own weight.
Riveted armor cna and will fall apart if poorly made.
