Because if it's sunk you don't get those missiles anymore. Additionally it's role becomes limited because it can't launch/recover seaborne vehicles (mines, torpedoes, UUV sensors, maintence divers, commando teams, etc) or air vehicles (sub patrol, UAV reconnaissance, resupply, etc) and can't shell nearby targets with regular howitzer gun. Also if there ever is a situation where the government needs 100 missiles onto a target, they will either use an AF bomber launched from the mainland US or a submarine if the mission requires a lot of stealth.

Which is why frigates are dominant: they might not be perfect any any individual role, but as a group they are much more resilient to damage since each can cover for each other.

Also for the howtizer thing you can also include a couple rail guns into the ship as well. No reason you can't.

Helipads, boat launching bays, storage bays, fuel tanks and so forth for those vehicles consumes a lot of space. Any boat can launch and recover smaller craft in a pinch, but for regular operations it's a subpar solution.

Panama (for artillery specifically) I think, and I will admit that this is a niche role. But are all combat weapons placed on ships, hence why the Navy usually opts for frigates that have one of each rather than huge boats with only one type of thing on it.

Those S/MR/ICBMs are going to be collecting dust most of the time as will the rail gun. Most of the combat operations, if/when they do happen, will be from launched aircraft (helos dropping torpedoes or commandos, fighter jets dropping bombs) or boats (commandos, mines, infantry).

I would argue that this already exists, the USS Grayback's tube was big enough to fit a small helicopter. However this is less of a "general purpose" vehicle and more of a commando deployment vehicle, which most subs already are.

Lots of small ships have more flexibility than a few big ones. While the total throw weight is smaller, there haven't been many situations where we needed to concentrate hundreds of cruise missiles on a single target. On the other hand, it's been very useful to have lots of less capable platforms scattered around the world.

Not nearly to the same degree, but yes, that's why I don't like the supercarrier concept, and would much prefer several smaller carriers. If you need more aircraft in one place you deploy them as a fleet.

Why not just launch them from the mainland? It's quicker and has far less logistics.
