So Its just like every other helicopter.

That thing probaly has better survivability than a Blackhawk...
>>
Probably maintenance related... My friend was an engineer on that project and said they had to keep redesigning parts because the military maintenance people were too dumb to put retaining pins back in...
>>
>>34839998
Yes, but a Blackhawk had to be hit with rpg wielding nogs to go down.

This just needed marines.
>>
>>34840009
>implying the rpg is more destructive than incompetent marines
>>
>>34840009

If you hand give three marines an iron rebar each one of them will break it, the second will lose it and the third will hurt himself on it.

No wonder it crashes if the marines get their hands on it.

Can confirm, my last job was designing test and maintenance equipment for the aerospace industry. the major airlines are pretty good about doing everything by the book, but I've heard some horror stories about what goes on at some of the military service depots. protip, don't get on anything that uses parts that went through Corpus Christi army depot

Blackhawks fall out of the sky due to maintenance issues and pilot error all the time too.

The Osprey is the safest VTOL aircraft in US inventory except for the F35B.

It's just that the Osprey carries more dudes so an Osprey crash is bigger news than a Blackhawk crash.

>Create an over engineered, overly complex piece of shit that requires the constant attention of a techpriest of the adaptus mechanicus to maintain
>Wonder why people are having problems maintaining it

It doeasn't matter how good the spec sheet looks. If an aircraft is that hard to maintain, then it is poorly engineered. It's the same with any machine. If you have a car that can go from 0 to 60 in 1.5 seconds but it requires the blood of a firstborn child every five miles in order to maintain it, than it is a shitty car no matter how well it performs.

What is this, 2001?

The V-22 has been the most reliable and safest aircraft in the entire USMC fleet since then.

Can anyone explain why these tiltrotor mutant monstrosities are even necessary?

Why not just build more powerful regular helicopters or some other form of VTOL transport aircraft.

This whole tilt 2 rotor layout seems wonky as hell

The good second is an exaggeration. The blades are long gone before you eject.

This is a classic of example of the "if america doesn't use it than its horrible and is stupid" meme. Can't you just accept that Russia has something nobody else does? It's impossible for this board.

>>34846136
nice projection. Please explain.
>>
>>34845793
I recently found out helicopters can literally crash themselves from just hovering in still air.

>>
All I know is, when I was in the service, everyone talked about the V-22 like it was a flying coffin and Avionics nightmare that would send young Marines to their graves. All of the salty dogs admitted, though, that they said the same thing about the Phrog (CH-46) when it was first introduced, and those things were god-damned exalted by the time they were retired. I dunno, we won't know until its time in service runs out...

>>
>>34846159
The issue isnt so much the speed of the explosive bolts and the trigger, it is the activation of the triggering mechanism. Pilots fixate and do not take steps to save themselves. Rotary wings are not encountering fatal issues at 35k feet. The pilot will go from flying an airplane to dieing 2 seconds before he realizes the transition. Bitching betty is there for a reason and the pilots who think they can walk away dont want any part of the flight parameters of rotary.

Isn't the issue the two rotors causing some kind of vortex that messes with flight stability?

Why don't other twin rotor helicopters have this issue, like the Chinook?

Why can't we just make a really fat Harrier with a troop compartment in the middle? I know the middle of a Harrier is the huge intake turbine, just put that on top. It will make it less vulnerable to ground fire!
>>
>>34849444
Literal death trap
>>
>>34849444
Harrier is notoriously hard to fly on hover and you want to make it bigger with more powerful engine? Also the fuel consumption on hover/vtol is just astronomical without even added weight.
>>
>>34842238
Jody is getting all three Marine wives pregnant because a barnyard only needs one rooster.

USAF maintenance is pretty good. I did that for 26 years. Other maintainers vary considerably.
>>
>>34849705
As it turns out, a hen will take on the duties of a rooster if one is not present. So unless the barn yard specifically wants chicks there is no need for a rooster since hens will lay eggs regardless of whether or not they got their fuck on.

>>

It's not from hovering. It's from having a vertical rate of descent where they settle into their own downwash. It can only happen if without any airspeed (in X/Y axis) you descend too fast and your blades lifting area decreases without the necessary power to arrest the rate of descent
