Most of those early attempts used existing AR/M-16 upper receivers, cut up and converted to belt-fed. The receiver, bolt/carrier and gas system aren't robust enough to handle it in the long run.
The Shrike is one successful attempt to convert the platform to belt-fed. Ares' business model in selling the Shrike sucked and pissed a lot of folks off. But the product works well. It's robust and is reliable with both belts and mags. The upper was designed from scratch to be a belt fed upper, not a converted one.
