Aside from freeze dried buckets and military MREs, I had a crate of humanitarian rations. Turns out they're vegan and meant to be as inoffensive as possible. If I was starving they'd be a godsend but the lentil stew was bland as shit until I baked a pork loin and mixed it in with other spices. I didn't. I have what I need. What is interesting are my neighbors. One slimy fuck told me "If anything happens I know where to go" and I told him "By that time everything in the store will be gone" (hoping I misjudged him) and he said "oh, I will just come to your place and take it"

My primary responsibility in life is to take care of my family. Having neighbors (more then one) that have mentioned they will come to my place for food and water if they need it makes me worried.

I still prepare for disasters and have a solid bug-out bag, but it's honestly simpler to go Mormon-style and have a shit-ton of canned food packed away in your pantry in case of an emergency. Add in a few essential survival supplies and a generator and you'll be good to survive most things that you're likely to run into.
I also found it was way more practical to pick up some useful hobbies that have use outside of an emergency situation. I've taken up gardening, camping, raising chickens, and mead making and can enjoy the benefits without the world going to shit. There's nothing wrong with being ready for a disaster but when it takes over your entire life, you kind of miss out on everything else.

This is where I am too.
I've seen the power be out for a month, in the dead of winter, with an (admitedly tiny) hurricane raging outside so the ferry can't bring food to restock the shelves at the store, and were it not for my own generator I'd only have had power a few hours a week from the rotation the power company did with their generators.
A generator, a generous amount of fuel, a well-stocked pantry, water in areas where it's not too common, a few work lamps, candles/lanterns, a good woodburning stove and some firewood (or a gas burner if you have enough gas), some basic first aid supplies, soap, blankets, maybe some liquor/pop/treats for the morale, a few guns with a pile of ammo because you already have them and you might just need it... Most of this is stuff people likely already have, just that you have a bit more than most.
It's more of being ready for the unexpected (And staying comfortable when it does happen) than waiting for the end of the world so you can feel like a smug cunt while chowing down on disgusting MREs while people are having a bad time around you.
...That's how I feel about it, at least.

It could probably be done perfectly well with a barrel or two of food-grade plastic or wood if you don't have access to fuckoff huge clay pots.

I grew up in the country, north east USA, with an extended family of hunters, outdoorsmen and farmers who all pretty much served a hitch in the military at one time or another.

Summers, the men and boys would fish or shoot rabbits and birds, and the women and girls would gather from the garden and bake. During Fall we'd harvest deer and turkey, and the women would can the garden harvest and bake.

When I turned 18, I moved to the West Coast for college, and to hang with family who were in the military. I had no idea how foolish and stupid city people were, and was stunned by how angry, greedy, and vicious the blacks and immigrants are.

My college roomies thought I was really weird because I always bought a couple extra cans of beans and a big bag of rice when we didn't have plans for it, but they figured it out when we had the occasional bad month with finances.

One roomie moved out when he saw my "sniper's rifle," a scoped Winchester model 70 .243 my Pops gave me for my 15th b-day. Other roomies were interested, and we harvested 3 black tails that fall. We still hunt together most years.

I guess I've always been a "prepper," but I consider anyone who doesn't prepare for lean times as being a fucking fool.

I now live in an isolated area in the mountains of central Arizona, I keep at least 6 months worth of canned food, and a lifetime supply of ammo if I'm only hunting. I have mule deer
and Javelina herds crossing my land most nights, and my next project is a solar powered well.
