Mossberg is good.

Hipoint 9mm carbine is also good. It is reliable, consider getting a spare magazine and the stock mag-holder (or two or three, they are like $15--20/per). Very minimal recoil, pretty accurate out to 100 yards. Very economical.

Eh, 9mm out of 16" isn't bad, iirc from a website it ballistically comes out near typical .357 Magnum at the muzzle of a 4" barrel, and very few people have ever complained about .357 Mag not having enough stopping power. It isn't a BAD choice, at least.

A single blast of 00 buck is comparable to hitting somebody with 9 rounds of 9mm fmj. When the time comes to put down a crackhead popping rounds off at you from across the room with his jennings a shotgun really blows a handgun caliber weapon out of the water.

OTOH if you're a little girly man and cant handle the twelve then pick up a 20g. If you can't handle that then pick up a rifle in 5.56x45 or 7.62x39. If you can't handle that then go back to the 9mm.

What the actual fuck is going on here? OP, what do you even want? A 9mm rifle is not self defense, it is a range toy. I have a pair of 9mm SBRs. They are tons of fun but not particularly practical.

Buy a shotgun, any listed in this thread is fine. You won't regret the purchase later. It will be a fine 'defensive weapon' that you don't shoot for fun much.

Save up for a handgun and accessories for when you turn 21. If you feel an itch before you are 21 get a 22lr rifle. That will get you shooting on the cheap. Once you have a shotgun, handgun and a rifle, then expand your collection to 'just for fun' (aka 9mm SBRs, NFA items, oversize pistols with ammo that costs $3 a round).

Don't fall for the memes. Start basic and work up.

16" submachine guns were pretty standard well into the 90s and early 2000s, they seemed to do alright back then. I personally would use a shotgun, but 9mm carbine > 9mm pistol for HD if we are talking pure energy.
