The answer to why you would want a "rifle" in a pistol caliber in a compact form factor is, surprise, they work really well in and around vehicles. Carbines were meant for mounted shooting, meaning they had to be lighter, easier to maneuver, and balanced in a way to allow easy handling. As for fun, I would say a pistol caliber carbine is a pretty economical way to get some rifle time.
