Theres no denying there was racial segregation, but that's really irrelevant to the circumstances of the conflict, which was an ex-European colony coming under siege by communist usurpers; and segregation was hardly uncommon in westernized nations at the time. The US had segregated fountains and toilets, does that mean that an interest in Vietnam inherently comes from a hatred of gooks? Much of the appeal for it comes from the underdog status (Only a few countries openly supported them under embargo), their extremely positive success rate (20:1 k/d IIRC) and their pioneering tactics borne out of scarcity of supplies. They also advertised in SoF and accepted foreign volunteers, which cultivated a very Dogs of war image in the public perception.

Met a rhodesian vet, I'm a south african brit and even I was surprised to find out that they didn't have segregation, the vote was open to blacks before it was open to women, general prejudice and discrimination was pretty small, blacks could pretty much work anywhere, the only thing that you needed to vote was a certain amount of land, but that makes sense when you take into account it was a full on farming based economy, the breadbasket of Africa, and this coincidentally meant alot of blacks couldn't vote because they didn't have enough land. It's a bit of a long story that I can get back to tomorrow if you want.
