Local populations can get out of control and eat fucking everything. My grandfather had to do a purge of their local squirrel population years ago because so damn many of them were around. They get into shit and chew on wires and whatnot.

>>
Rock had come, equipped with a gun, to shot off the head of his rival
>>
>>34823249

So over population is OK with you? Again your in the burbs right? In the rural areas cayotes , squirrels, rats , birds and even wolves if the population gets high enough are pests and destroy not just wires but also cattle and crops.

It's rural areas that are a pain to get people to re-wire shit ontop of a long wait. That can cause a lot of problems and cause more damage to the house or items the longer you have to wait as well.So a lot of little bastards can and usually will cause problems of not in check.

Also they do taste good and have a decent bit of meat on them when cooked and prepared right.Again rubbed with garlic salt and pepper over charcoal keeps its moist and tasting good.

Their legs are like mini-chicken legs that have a bit of stringyness to them. I've found it best either pan fried or made as a stew.

I had to commit a squirrel genocide with a Marlin 60 one time when I was about 13 because they were destroying the roof of our house trying to make dens. Also chewing wires and occasionally getting fried in transformers.

The Eastern grey squirrel averages about 1 pound of usable meat per squirrel. It's the largest of the three major species of squirrel in the US, but it's only about 25% larger than the smallest of the three.

Daily limits range from 3 to over 20 depending on location. At the low end, a full limit will feed a family of 5 and leave leftovers. At the high end it's a week's worth of food for 3 people.

Also, they taste good and are one of the leaner red meats even by game animal standards (which are already significantly leaner than commercial beef or chicken).

Fascinating! I have also found that birdshot barely disrupts the skin, the holes are so small. Sometimes you can't even see the wound that did them in. I suppose my next experiment will be a 7.62x54r 203gr Soft Point. Will be difficult, considering Mosin hits about a foot high at the range I will most likely encounter a squirrel. Science is difficult, but I don't give up easily.

Cats actually suck ass at hunting rodents. Small dogs are better at it.

Hawks in my area are picky assholes and would rather eat doves than eat squirrels.
>>
>>34824659
depends on your environment man!

Where I live, Squirrels are basically a plague, but rabbits have actually decreased in population and the local hunters actually leave them alone.

My thinking is that with the drought the grass the rabbits eat is dying out and the coyotes which are for some reason protected by law despite becoming more common than deer in the area are eating the shit out of the rabbits, but the squirrels can avoid being eaten by climbing trees.

Also like I said before, I've observed that the Hawks in my area prefer eating other birds than rodents...don't know why.

Yeah, duck is a pretty fatty bird with being water fowl and all. It takes a bit of skill and practice to cook duck without over cooking it. I know some people dislike fat and want to roast it out, but it protects the meat from burning and is full of flavor. deep frying the skin to make chips is a really rich way to eat your salsa and quac.

Watch the Good Eats episode on duck. Duck used to be a common meat for Americans back in the day, now it's only Chinese restaurants or busting out the shotgun.

>>34824659
I don't shoot songbirds, that's just mean. I have shot a few pest birds, but it is rare. I used to love coyotes, until they attacked my dog. Now I shoot them when they come close to the house, but otherwise I leave them alone. Same for rattlesnakes, I only kill the ones near my house. The ones in the hills, I leave them alone.

Second squirrel's got shot in the head, what better shot placement is there?
>>
>>34833471
You need to stretch it out for it to dry nice and flat. If you don't staple it down, it wants to roll back up into a snake shape (go figure). The plain yellow part of the skin where the staples are (the belly) has no pattern, and isn't valuable. That part will end up being cut off or sewn underneath an edge, so you never see it. Little staple holes are no problem.

Bonus fun facts: cut off the head carefully, and bury it at least a foot deep. A snake's head will continue to reflexively bite for hours if you stick something in it's mouth. This can actually kill you.

Very well aimed, good job anon. As you can see with pic related, I am more of a center mass shooter. These are ground squirrels, no good for eating. Total pest control. These were 55 grain .223 loads, the cheap stuff from Walmart. Inconsistent results as you can see. Both squirrels died immediately, no flopping around, but the one in the background tore open, while the male squirrel in the foreground had relatively little visible external damage. >a whole roasted pig is commonly served with an apple in its mouth. Despite claims that the apple is there to keep the mouth open and let gases escape from the pig’s body as it roasts, it turns out that “it’s purely aesthetic,” says Steven Raichlen, host of Primal Grill on PBS and author of The Barbecue! Bible. “It may be, in the process of roasting without the apple, that the jaws would tighten into a ghastly grimace. The apple can soften the look.”
>Raichlen says that the custom goes back at least 800 years, and may have its origins in how pigs were traditionally raised. In the fall, they would have been fattened on apples, so putting the fruit in the roasted pig’s mouth would have been “a way to portray the life and death cycle.” (The pig would be “eating” the apple in both life and death.) Other than that, he says, “a pig snout is not the most beautiful thing to look at,” and an apple is a way to dress it up.

I think you're full of shit.

Sugar water and slow cook in over.
It makes it golden brown on the out side and nice fall of the bone on the inside.

No, snakes just have a very simple brain, and it mostly relies on reflexes and nerves, unlike our brain which is more like a computer sending complicated instructions to different muscles. When the doctor taps your leg with the little hammer and your leg kicks, that is a reflex. More evolved animals rely less on reflexes, and more on thought pattern leading to actions. A snake has a very un-evolved (reptilian) brain, and a lot of its actions in day to day life are reflexes (bugs are this way as well, but to a much greater extent than snakes). After a snake is dead, it will still reflexively coil into a ball, if you straighten it out. If you put a dead snake next to a stick, it wraps around it. Poke it's mouth, it bites. Google the snake brain, and how it is so different than our own. Fascinating.

I was walking my dog right now, down the long dirt road to my mailbox. All of a sudden, my foot just falls 8 inches into the road, dirt in my shoe. Ground squirrel dug his hole too close to the surface. Asshole

I remember seeing a hunting video in Switzerland

Remembering our roots, as hunters, is really helpful in reminding us of how to talk and think about hunting. In Europe, when a hunter is successful, he or she will put a sprig of grass or a green branch in the animal’s mouth, sending it off with a “last meal” as a sign of respect. Native American hunters offered prayers of thanks and sprinkled cornmeal or tobacco around an animal’s mouth; these were very valuable resources and showed a “trade” for the animal’s life. Today, many American hunters have adapted those traditions and made some of them their own.
At the core of all this tradition is respect for animals and even acknowledging a little bit of regret when we take one of their lives.
