Because Russia has not so great amphibious assault capabilities that can only be done on shores close to their own (Baltics, Odessa, Georgia, Finland) because all they have in this regard are heavy landing craft, aside the fact that the Russian Naval Infantry is only 4 brigades and one battalion in size. The Mistrals would significantly enhance their capabilities to land Marines and more of them on shores further away and to be able to give those Marines helicopter CAS support.

In the end they didn't receive the Mistrals because Crimea voted to join Russia and France decided they didn't want to sell them to Russia so they went to Egypt.

Russians don't have a great industry in these types of ships and also they don't make ships engines, currently they have very big problem because Ukraine used to make them for them

Egypt needed to buy some new military equipment and they decided to get mistrals equipped with Russian EW and helicopters to control the Sanai desert

Russia wanted the Mistrals because they wanted to build goodwill with France. They have no use for such ships. If they really needed such ships they would've just bought Chinese.

Egypt wanted Ka-52K helicopters so they bought the ships so they'll have a reason to buy the Ka-52K.

this was mostly Serdyokov's move (who was russian minister of defense at the time and wanted more western gear, such as producing the Iveco Lynx and running tests on the Centauro). His succesor, Shoigu, criticized the contract as soon as he got the job and said that the ships were built to civilian standards and were pretty much useless as they couldn't handle icy waters

But that's not the point of the debate.

France was FORCED by pretty much everyone in fucking NATO to not conclude the deal. The russian sailors were trained for the ships kilometers away from them, ready to embark. Then the ukrainian crisis began.
It took MONTHS to settle the case, and "allies" around had to help France find someone to sell these to. Which turned to be Egypt thanks to Saudi money.

Also these ships aren't that great, they're not built on military norms. They should not be front line ships imho.

And he was so fucking right it doesn't even hurts.

Anyway, call me back when they make these under military norms with actual fucking armor and fire protection to begin with. As well as some relevant weapons onboard. And a fully hardened bridge to house heavy aircrafts. Other than that, they're pretty nice ships. But we should have launched a new carrier instead of making these things.

Because the next couple of ship will be built in Russian shipyard. France will help Russia upgrade their shipyard for Mistral. Once that done, Russia can use that modern shipyard for something else.

A "vote" isn't a real vote when a country invades a territory then asks the people there if they're ok with it while they're still under military occupation. If that's the standard for democracy in Russia no wonder their country is shit.
