The original CE and 2 Marine helmet. From Halo 3 onward they either had jaw protectors that fucked the cheekweld or were fully enclosed, but originally they were lit.

God I miss the heavy plating of Bungie era Marines.

Halo is my favorite unrealistic universe, they do goofy and well done designs without completely shattering the suspension of disbelief.

It's not overdone like Killzone and it isn't autistic neckbeard shit like 40k.

Nice balance, between fun and realism.

Fun fact, Sgt. Johnson was in the Orion program. Also known as the Spartan I program
>>
>>34819840
Is that why he's immune to the flood?
>>
>>34819859
Probably. Also explains how he is league's above other marines and even ODST. The Orion program was ultimately a failure. Most of the candidates suffered extreme mental degradation. The program was scrapped and the remaining subjects were then integrated bank into rank and file. Most succumbed to extreme ptsd and the like and were institutionalized. Others made their way to special operations groups. And were sworn to secrecy by ONI. Orion was erased, until it was started back up by Halsey under a new name. The Spartan II program.

That's a good point, the cheek weld serves to help the entire upper body stiffen and increase stability with the lower body. Cameras help around corners and over barriers only.
>>
>>34819859

I've got the concept books, and he wasn't part of the Spartan program, he's immune to the flood because due to fighting the covenant for so long, the plasma grenades have made him radioactive AND cancerous. Due to the radiation, the flood can't get a biological grip on him.

Can't tell if it was a retcon but from what I remember the whole radiation from fighting Covenant thing (Boren's Syndrome they called it) was a cover up by ONI to conceal the existence of the ORION program.
Also lets be honest, if it was true there'd be at least hundreds (somewhere around 100-200 marines out there I'd say, attrition rates are still fucking high in the Halo universe) would be completely immune to Flood infection.
>>
>>34816065
nobody posted the DEVTAC Ronin? disappointed.
>>
>>34820171
It's from a single large dose not long-time overexposure.

Originally Johnson had Boren's Syndrome, a radiation-induced CNS disease. He was the last man standing in some ship-board action and used literally crates and crates of plasma grenades to repel waves of Covenant troops. It made his CNS janky and the flood can't take hold.

it's since been retconned to >>34820274

It comes from vast exposure to plot armor and shoehorning.

Also, Halo 1 was the only good Halo, and the first three books were the only ones worth reading.

I think 343i did a retcon on a bunch of stuff.
Though I think the whole ORION project/Boren's Syndrome retcon was from way back. Like around Halo 2/Halo 3.

May have something to do with the books, IMO. Plus, like I said, if they stuck with the Boren's Syndrome explanation then logically humanity would have hundreds of people they could use to fight the Flood as they could never get infected.

Personally I sort of like the ORION explanation. It gives a lot of reason as to why Johnson is a badass other than him just being a badass.
>>
>>34821692
That's what I'm sayin dawg
>>
>>34819935
Nah he was immune to the flood because of a neurological disease from overexposure to plasma grenade wash. Its covered in "first strike" his nervous system was so damaged that the flood couldn't force its way in.

It's more of a gesture of symbolic takeover like how Disney bought over Star Wars and killed EU but gave GA Thrawn an honorable mention in rebels.

And fuck 343 for killing off the rookie. I don't even see much sense in it.
It's basically like how they killed off Jul Mdama in the beginning of Halo 5. It basically fucked over anyone who even remotely liked Halo 4 Spartan Ops.

I swear they based some of the units in ArmA Apex off of that. The helmet looks like a CTRG Stealth Helmet crossed with the CSAT Viper Helmet.

>>34825829
I can't find anything on it thats objective and not by some shitty rag of a newspaper.

Almost everything thats out there is from the company, and the "testing" they show doesn't list ammunition loadings or proper testings for BFD. There's no reviews, no discussion about how they hold up to use and the people in the videos don't inspire confidence in their knowledge of firearms.

Very skeptical, especially given that they don't seem to have addressed the problems that have kept ballistic face masks from use in the past.

Like that even fucking matters. There isn't any reason why you couldn't use that helmet and those sights together effectively, it just might not be very comfortable. That said if it becomes an issue just raise the sights a tiny bit and then viola! Problem fixed.

You don't need a cheek weld for infantry marksmanship at all, we're not talking about tack driving precision. Even a general "shoot in that direction" is good enough, infantry rifle fire is not some incredible thing that wins engagements, it's the thing that ties down some retard up in the hills until artillery/CAS/mortars/rocket/grenades can actually make the kill. If you really want it to be possible to look down the sights without any encumbrance whatsoever, settle with a helmetcheek weld, because all you're doing is stabilizing the weapon in relation to the head/body. (hence the effectiveness of the chin weld in certain positions)

So in short, fuck your cheek weld. That's not even the thing that should concern you about all this sci-fi stuff. You should be more worried about what that stuff can be used for when exposed to the lowest common denominator.

Simply thinking that physics don't apply in the future..

More over the biggest fucking annoyance of all is the implication that encountering an alien species no matter how far future flung it might be, we as a military and a species in general would last in any drawn out campaign, let alone encounter one to begin with.

I believe he is saying that much like we as a species have not waged war on fruit flies, alien species too have not wages war on humans.

The fact that we have not detected signs of intelligent alien life does not mean that it doesn't exist. What if they are hiding from us, and we are simply unable to detect them? Who is to say that there isn't a self-replicating swarm of satellites programmed to ram themselves into planets of intelligent life?

In space, the only move is first attack. If you don't, the enemy can just launch the biggest projectile they have as fast as they can towards your planet, and there is nothing you can do to stop it, ensuring the complete obliteration of your entire race. The only winning move is to spread and propagate as far and as fast as you are able to, and destroy anything that could be a threat to you before it decides to fight back.

What resources do we have that they can't find easier from asteroids floating around? We have absolutely nothing an alien species would want, especially if they have to fight us for it. It's simply easier to instantly genocide opposing alien factions than have to deal with them chimping out on you.

tl;dr other anon is correct, you come off as a highschool summerfag who has done literally zero reading on space interactions. we might have already doomed ourselves because some rogue broadcasting stations launched a shitload of messages out into space a while ago for no reason in an attempt to contact aliens, without thinking that the aliens would just nuke us from space.

Actually one of the more prevalent things in space interaction is that we simply don't have the tech to understand what aliens are saying to us. You could blast radio waves to africa, but unless they have a radio, they can't hear it. Perhaps aliens are blasting us with space-jams, but it just looks like background noise to us with no pattern to it. Time will tell.

Especially the farther and farther our civilization progresses scientifically.
> no matter how far future flung it might be
>>
>>34831308
And where would these young aliens be?
If they have comparable tech to ours, then they don't exist withing at LEAST several lightyears, as in they effectively do not exist as they are too fucking far away that you couldn't get there in a dozen lifetimes.
If they are close but hidden, then they are obviously not comparable on a technological level.
If you are going to be pedantic and spout some this like
>"lul u fuckin idiot i was saying that we could kill on the bateria on MARS r u retarded???????"

We are one of the youngest galaxies, in a young solar system.
The odds are that if another alien species exists, it has been around for far longer than we have. Once you are able to harness the power of a sun, you effectively have unlimited power, and are free to float around sucking up other suns. The one saving grace that we have is that the universe is so fucking vast as to be effectively masking everything from aggressive species.

Lets go over some assumptions of meeting another alien species:
>any species that is spacefaring would be an apex predator, as it was able to out-compete every other species on the planet
>it has managed to get past a great filter that allowed them to engage in vast spacefaring expeditions
>they have managed to manage their own environment to be hospitable to life after any damage they have done to it, or have managed to start collecting resources from space/nearby planets
>they have not decided to just upload themselves to a planetary AI and life forever in the core of a planet, which means that they are not complatent
>they have seen how humans interact and feel confident they would be able to defend themselves against us and our weapons

The chance of there being an alien civilization that is close enough to us to interact with, on a similar technological level, and not hyper-aggressive (like humans are) is so exceedingly small as to be zero.
If we ever meet aliens, one of us will be wiped out before the other is killed. There is literally nothing to be gained.
>give dindus space-tech and they chimp out on you
>anything the dindus have you can get somewhere else easier
>no need for slaves when you have robots, no need for any physical goods when you can just synthesize them
>if they for some reason have something you want, it would be easier to just infect the planet with a virus and then collect the raw materials you want
>"its impossible for an alien race to launch a nuke the size of the moon at us because i say so!"

>>
>>34831433
what purpose would aliens have with us?
look at colonialism, all it did was fuck over europeans in the end, with essentially no benefit past spices and sugar and slave labour. aliens have no need for shit like that if they are able to come to earth, as there are probably a million other planets with water or iron or whatever the fuck else they need, and there isnt any pesky humans running around to fuck things up. they wouldnt need slaves if they can warp across the universe, hell HUMANS dont even need slaves. we have tractors and factories to do slave labour, slaves are just too slow.

You have this idea in your mind that it would be the covenant vs humans, when it would be something like the covenant vs a pen of swine. there is literally no way that the pigs can fight back, and if you are a vegetarian, there is no reason for you to even interact with the pigs. they have noting you want, and are just an annoyance. either you just kill them from afar or you just leave them alone
>>
>>34831533
>That stipulation
>when the original argument was humans will never ever ever ever ever beat aliens for ever and ever

>statistical unlikelyhood is impossibility
>"summerfag argument" was we'd reasonably be able to take on any species of the same age or younger

>>

correct, humans will never beat an alien species.
Look no further than fucking Earth.
>country tries to get rid of central bank/develop nuclear weapons/go against jewish hegemony/commit wrongthink
>suddenly their economy crashes/viruses infect reactors/gets sanctions/gets assassinated
why would a galaxy superpower just sit by and watch a potential threat develop? Hell, when fucking DEER start getting too uppity we cull them. ISISreal started mucking about and they were obliterated, what makes you think that when humans start chimping out across the galaxy that we wont just be blown up?

We are a young race. As soon as somebody creates a dyson sphere, or even a dyson ring, they effectively control their solar system and surrounding galaxy, unless another power swoops in and kills them all.
You seem to have never taken a statistics course in your life, in addition to not even reading a wikipedia article on this subject.

>humanity le fuck ye xDD
>we r champs fuk u alien scum this is JUST like my videogames
>aliens are bipedal organisms who breathe air and eat food
>there is no way that aliens are effectively ghosts to us and can synthesize a perfect genophage that kills every single human at the same time without being noticed

how can you look at contemporary genetic engineering and think that a race with an extra thousand years, which is effectively no time at all in space, wouldn't blow the fuck out of us?
compare 2017 humans to 1017 humans, and make them fight. there is no scenario where 1017 humans win. what makes you think that 2017 humans can fight 3017 humans?

what makes you think that 2017 humans can fight 20017 aliens that have 300 planets under their control? summerfags should be the first ones shot into space to find other races
>>
>>34831567
>what purpose would aliens have with us?
they might have a planet we want to propagate the human species.
I literally never said we would not be the aggressors in the conflict

Like anon said we'd apparently all out destroy their entire species as to avoid the problems we had with colonialism

>You have this idea in your mind that it would be the covenant vs humans
no. you have this stuck in your head if we encountered a planet that was habitable to us, populated by a species of similar age or younger we'd either seek diplomacy or attack and genocide them.

go ahead and explain to me how if we found an alien race inhabiting a planet we could use billions of years away, whose apex species is younger or the same age as ours would win
>>
>>34831651
you are so fucking stupid its actually offensive
what is easier, traveling 100 light years away only to genocide a planet, that way you can live in it
OR
terraform the one next to you and spend all of 5 minutes taking a taxi to it

there is literally no purpose to contacting alien races unless you are out to kill them as a preventative measure. none at all. if we decide to play the diplomat with an alien race, we will be exterminated. maybe not by the nice peaceful race, but perhaps a third race is listening in and decides to launch a moon-sized nuke at our planet after watching how shit out planet is, and how aggressive and pollutant we are.

How far away is the next closest earth-like planet? Why the fuck would we go there instead of just colonizing mars? Once we have advanced to a place where we want to spread ourselves out (to avoid moon-nukes), we would want to AVOID aliens, not seek them out

>>34831673
because they are billions of years away. if we have the tech to travel billions of years away in a reasonable amount of time, we would have a gigantic glowing target on our backs from other alien races who are more advanced than us

i fucking hate talking about space because literal highschool summerfaggots read autistic 40k novels and think that it's like some videogame where everybody starts off at the same level and its a battle royale.
the universe is essentially endless, there is another race out there who may not even realize we are here because we are so irrelevant, and the moment we do something crazy we will be automatically dismantled by a swarm of dyson robots who then surround our sun to leech its energy

I can't believe no one has mentioned the battleroid security officer from Marathon, although you're all probably too young and didn't have Apple Mac computers. Now he's totally rad.

The Marathon stories were amazing, yes its a shooter, but the depth it went too was wow, if you read all the terminals you'll know why we don't want AI's controlling anything.

as was established by one of the two people arguing against humanity

the only way for a species to survive is by propogating space over long distances and eliminating the possibility of extinction from one planets destruction.

even if we had a moon base humanity would need to spread out over larger distances.

>a race intelligent enough to travel lightyears away would care about fighting monkeys instead of just making a moon base
We are centuries or even decades away from being able to create a spaceship that could sustain life on a cross generational colonization mission but do not have the resources on earth to build a Dyson sphere.

Altered Carbon- Don't really remember, think I accidentally read like the 3rd one first
Starship Troopers- Classic
Hyperion- Classic
Ilium/olympus- Also classic

>That 80s scifi series that reads slow as fuck and has a similar plot to dune but the alien race are hired as mercenaries on starships and a human becomes one of them

>Another series where Old people are given the chance to die or join the defense force and shot off world given green bodies and fight aliens all over the place

there are no close planets within several lightyears that even remotely show bacterial life, much less intelligent life.
there are no close and young planets that we could go to war with.
even if they were a SINGLE lightyear away, it would literally be
>300 marines vs an entire planet
shitposts, because we arent going to send literally the entire world's military to attack another planet. even if we did, if earth2.0 send like a dozen dropships full of troops, we would be able to repel them, or at least outlast them, if we didnt just send a suicide drone to
intercept them once they were detected.

>"but in my super specific non-existant reality there would be an africa-tier planet where mars is that we could conquer before getting glassed by interstellar peacekeeping robots!!!!"
yeah man the first thing you would want to do as a piss poor retard backwater planet is to show the universe that you just want to fuck things up, surely the dyson-sphere owning civilizations won't want to just moon-nuke you to save themselves the trouble of having to deal with you in a thousand years when you can actually get further than a few solar systems

>there are no close planets within several lightyears that even remotely show bacterial life, much less intelligent life.
I mean, it's not as though almost all of the exoplanets we've detected are gas giants or anything.

We have microorganisms on Earth that can survive in hard vaccuum, it's entirely concievable to think that there are worlds within our stellar neighbourhood hosting complex life. However, we have nowhere near the tools to detect it yet.

>We are one of the youngest galaxies, in a young solar system. The odds are that if another alien species exists, it has been around for far longer than we have
Well actually the Milky Way is one of the oldest galaxies, and whether the age of the solar system is relevant depends on which Abiogenetic theory you ascribe to. Either way, the Mediocrity principle still applies - we're far more likely to be average citizens of the universe than we are outliers. This applies to age as well.

>apex predator
Not necessarily. There exist entire ecosystems on Earth that don't have predators at scales larger than insects. There's also also no reason to assume that intelligent species have to develop from predators nor that those that do would be apex predators. Humans are barely apex predators - only recently (on a developmental time scale) achieving that and only on a Racial scale not an individual one.

You're also making the assumption that they'd come here while we were still taking our first steps, while the other guy seems to talking about a future situation where humans are expanding as well.

The line of thought of "We meet aliens because they FTL travel to us -> they have FTL and therefore are technologically superior -> they destroy us" is flawed. For one its unlikely that FTL is even possible. If we ever even meet aliens, chances are it'd be a slowboat of some form and therefore not need technology much in advance of what we have now.

>>34831567
>HUMANS dont even need slaves. we have tractors and factories to do slave labour, slaves are just too slow.

Banks is soft sci-fi as hell, but it's so ridiculously over the top it doesn't matter. Ships that fight at multiple thousands of c at a minimum? While in an alternate dimension? With their standard armaments being compressed anti-matter and micro black holes? Fuck me, a single shot from either of those could destroy planets, and standard battles involve trying to teleport thousands of those directly onto the enemy ship while they attempt to evade and do the same to you, all within fractions of a microsecond and happening with the combatants lightyears apart. It's fucking absurd.
