The section density of a 300 grain .458" bullet is pretty low. Combine that with the enormous expansion caused by driving a soft lead bullet at that speed, and the chance of overpen is no more than for any other rifle.

You have to understand human psychology, anon. It starts with one person who is seriously deranged and really does want to fuck a deer. Then trolls realize how annoying it is, so they copycat. It's still a heavy as shit bullet going fast, I mean you can mitigate it by not going for a hardcast or FMJ but unless you're expecting to be burglarized by a lion I can't think of any time a .458 would be practical for HD.

I guess maybe you could go for a really light bullet, like some .45 Colt hollowpoint made from particularly soft lead, but then you have an obscenely fast projectile.
