Honestly, if you're innawoods or just in a spread out city even, 14.5 - 16 are your best options. 11.5, assuming it still cycles properly, would only be good in really dense areas like inside buildings or in cities like Hong Kong, New Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, cities where it's essential to keep moving and be maneuverable. In an American city, generally 14.5 is your best bet, SBR wise, but even then I'd trust a 16 most.

For people who aren't restricted to FMJ, modern hunting/self-defense loads allow guns as short as 10.3" to be effective out to 2-300 yards.
12.5" barrels deserve to be more popular because they offer ballistics practically indistinguishable from 14.5" in a noticeably smaller package.

yup, even with a 10.3 barrel the 5.56 get 7-800lb of energy.

that's more than most pistol calibers and with the right ammo, it performs wonderfully
