Want to be Signals Officer.
Can join Reserves while in school.

Questions:
1) Why the fuck won't the recruiters call me back?
2) What value can you get from beginning your career as a military officer? Is it just a meme, and a waste of valuable years?
2) If I want to be an Officer for a few years after graduating, will I be serving in reserves as enlisted until I complete my degree?

Nothing cool, just cleaning an unventilated storage like a wageslave. Got lightheaded, took a nap, woke up with the smell of ammonia for a week, and ever since I can smell at maybe 20% what I used to.

It's not that hard if you're intelligent, have good grades, and don't have anything bad in your record. Army OCS is one of the easiest ways to commission (acceptance-wise) out of any military commissioning source.

I don't know, but I would think not. I know Air Force OTS doesn't - the previous SECAF wanted to increase "diversity" and all that, but they stated that they weren't going to accomplish this through quotas. They are going to do targeted recruiting instead.

Let's assume I cannot hide it, due to Top Secret Clearance etc.

I believe I was diagnosed Depressed when it was merely a state of grief due to a sports injury screwing over my plans. I did some research and it is a common misdiagnosis to mistake simple grief for depression, and it makes sense given how fast I got over it once I learned how to heal my injury. How does MEPS look at misdiagnoses like that?
>>
>>34812604
For the last time, they do not dig through medical records for security clearances. It takes lawyers and legal proceedings to open that shit up, even with your consent. Security clearances are for international contacts, legal problems and financial history. They don't care if you broke your foot when you were 15 and didn't tell them.
>>
>>34812604
>How does MEPS look at misdiagnoses like that?
They dont look at all if you keep your naive mouth shut whore.
>>
>>34812604
You would need to go to a mental health doctor and get them to test you and document in writing that it was a misdiagnosis. They're not going to take your word for it.

But like >>34812642 says, they can't find out anything about your medical history that you don't tell them. Don't believe the rumors.

Well, It's kind of dawning on me that I may have pulled the trigger too early, and that I'm about to be fucked in the ass with a 40 foot pole. I just recently talked to a recruiter for the first time, and now I'm scheduled to go to MEPS. The recruiter said that it's just to see if I pass the physical and to see what MOS I can get into, but for some reason I feel he left out some bigger details.
>>
>>34813394
Bump for this
>>
>>34813613
You're not even in the DEP yet, you can back out at any time. Your first visit to MEPS isn't a big deal, but once you swear in to the USMC DEP it's much more difficult to switch branches. They can never force you to ship though.
>>
>>34814024
So when do you swear into the DEP? I'm kind of afraid that they'll make me do it when I go to MEPS for the first time without knowing shit about my MOS. It's probably a stupid concern, but I'm very unfamiliar to all of this, which is why it feels as if the recruit is pushing me too early into the DEP without letting me explore the other branches.
>>
>>34814146
Why the fuck did you agree to go to meps then? Tell your recruiter you want to cancel
>>
Reminder that enlistment is not a zero-sum game: no branch is a bad option. There are only good options and better options.

Reminder also that the military employs shills to prowl message boards and fill you with misinformation. Take everything you see here with a grain of salt.
>>
>>34812050

Iliotibial-band syndrome. A sports injury from excessive running, lifting etc that I read some 20% of recruits get in basic training/boot camp.
It is diagnosed by MRI, and there is likely old scar tissue in my legs that would show up on another diagnostic MRI if I get it again.

That said I shoulda kept my trap shut, no shit, but Gunny kept pressuring me to fill stuff out while I was barely lucidly awake and my logical mind wasn't present.
>>
>>34814251
I agreed because the recruiter told me that I had to take a physical in order to see if I even qualify to enlist in the marines, and that the only way to see what MOS I can choose is if I go and pass the physical and get my AVSAB score.
>>
>>34814416

depends entirely on the job/unit, but it's not like boot camp 24/7. The military is full of normal people doing normal stuff.
>>
>>34814700

Military schedule is 100 % dependent on where you're at. PT for 1-2 hours in the morning, work at 0900, then getting off at 1700~ is fairly typical though. You end up with a good 5-6 hours in the evening to do whatever you want (depending on how much you value sleep), as well as lots of weekends and time off.

I've been shopping around in different branches. The job that I want to do is offered by both the Navy and the Marine Corps. The Navy says that it's very difficult to secure a Mass Communication job, as they are extremely rare, but the Marine Corps says that I have a very good chance of landing it so long as I'm ready at the beginning of the fiscal year.

I've been told that Marines receive a bit less training and deploy more on average, but if they're by and large pretty much the same job with a different coat of paint, then I have no problem with that.

Ostensibly, IS there a whole lot of difference between how the two conduct public affairs?
>>
Relatively speaking is there a high chance of getting deployed as either a heli pilot(army) or a crew chief ?

Quick background:

I was in the Army as 18X and got kicked out because of an erroneous enlistment; I had a fucked up knee. I'm currently in the process of getting that medically cleared and am going to enlist in the Navy this time around.

My initial idea was to enlist as a nuke, however I'll take the OP's advice on that and won't.

So between SWCC and AIRR which would be more satisfying? does anyone have experience or knowledge about the programs?

I don't know about the Navy, but this guy published some of what he did in the USMC as public affairs
https://undertheradar.military.com/2016/09/j-d-vance-learned-marine-corps/

If you're really set on that specific job, your best bet might be to find a Navy PA and a Marine PA online and email them asking about their day to day jobs and what they've done.

My injury wasn't sorted out, as I didn't know about it until I started running at a higher intensity. Essentially my kneecap wasn't tracking right and is on the otter portion of my joint causing cartilage inflammation and muscular instability.

Not all jobs in army have faster promotion than their counterparts in other branches.
For example if you want to be a linguist you're much better off in the Navy.

Generally sound idea, but doing it in a job that doesn't have as much dreary bullshit but still has interesting stuff to write about might be a thing.
You could go straight up public relations and cover a bunch of events or things going on, or crew chief to travel more and see pretty stuff I figure. I don't really know how that all works exactly though.

Hey, guys.

I just got laid off from my job as an investigator, right after I graduated from college with my associate's in criminal justice, and just before I was able to apply for my own PI license.

I'm genuinely considering joining the US military now that my civilian hopes and dreams have been crushed, and I'm wondering where to go from here. Which branches have good investigative/law enforcement positions? Which branch values associate's degrees most?

Thanks, guys.
>>
>>34825062

Why? If your dreams are crushed you must have fucked up. Why not just apply in another state or something? Otherwise id say join the Army and try for that War crimes investigator job, i forgot the MOS.

>>34825062
You should check out Army CID
>>
>>34825090
Laid off because the agency I was working for couldn't afford to pay employees anymore. I put a lot of time and effort into the job.

I guess I'm using hyperbole, but it's pretty devastating to me. I thought this was what I was going to do for the rest of my life. Or at least for a long time.

I'll look up that war crimes investigator position. Thanks.

What RAF ground trades should I consider?
I scored highly enough that every ground trade is available to me, but I didn't pass the CBAT (aptitude test) so no air trades are available to me.

Right now I am struggling to chose which ground trade to enlist in?

Any suggestions?

I'm the guy you originally quoted. I stopped caring about age after high school and I'm sure there are a lot of mature, early 20s NCOs in the military but I also know that a kid who enlisted at 18 and is now an NCO at 22 and has never done anything else besides the military will have a very different perspective than a 26 year old who has held multiple jobs, has some college experience, and has started a business. It doesn't bother me that someone younger will be telling me what to do, but having been 22 and seeing how younger people act makes me believe that some of them might feel threatened by older enlisted by default. I'm just there to learn but a younger guy with something to prove might target the older guys.
Oh and you're not totally correct. Hierarchy may not have anything to do with age, but age has a lot to due with hierarchy.

Asking again: What exactly do people mean when they say that Marines have a bad quality of life?
>>
Guys Im conflicted

Navy CB or Marine Combat Engineer
MARSOC or Rangers
SARC or 18D
Tanker or Heli Crew Chief
Infantry or MSG/FAST
I like doing all of the things above me do, but dont know which. Dont want to go to recruiters and sit there for half the day asking questions.

Also fitness question
Is running a straight mile or two instead of doing intervals like c25k detrimental/beneficial?
>>
>>34827521

The intervals are meant to help you run for longer overall. If you feel it's too easy, just skip ahead a week or two until you feel properly challenged.
>>
>>34825054
Just be smart, don't give the CC's attitude, don't sit with the back on your chair at mess hall. Sound off when you need to and I cant stress enough how important it is to just listen. Had a shipmate get yelled at during night time because he was too loud but he was so used to being loud that everytime he spoke he would slowly try to be louder again. Slipups can and might happen for some people, make sure you dont fuck up so bad you get put on ramp. Simple things like putting your shirt on backwards can warrant an assbeating from your CC's too. Brother company during Basic; CC made a shipmate yell "I cant dress myself" over and over again till the CC got tired.
>>
>>34827584
Its not that I feel its too easy, I get my ass beat by default. But for some reason when I go to run whatever distance I think is associated with that day, I get my ass beat.
how cancerous is it to listen to cadences while running?
>>
How should I spiffy myself up if I wanna be in marsoc? I assume they got 80 million hulk smash dudes trying out.. im 23.

I'm not a credible source but ever since top gun and other hollywood movies romanticised the fighter jets, everyone wanted to become one.
Bomber pilots have been a very low number because there were simply not enough bombers due to the fuckhuge price of the B-2 but hopefully with the B-21 those numbers will rise and more pilots will get their dream of bombing empty buildings

What RAF ground trades should I consider?
I scored highly enough that every ground trade is available to me, but I didn't pass the CBAT (aptitude test) so no air trades are available to me.

My interests are in the air trades. I would like to serve 3 years in a ground trade and then transfer to an Air trade.

Right now I am struggling to chose which ground trade to enlist in?

Any suggestions?

>no air trades
I assume you mean no aircrew roles?
If that's the case then do ATC or WC.
>>
>>34829108
God I don't know the term I'm looking for. No trades that require an aptitude test, just the airmen selection exam.

ATC falls under aircrew man, which I can't do.
What's WC? Aerospace battle manager comes up when I google it.

I really don't want a desk job. I want a job where I'm active and doing something hands on, not sitting behind a desk doing Admin.

I'd rather just join the royal marines than do admin
>>
>>34829125
Weapons Controller. It's under Air Operaions Support like ATC (and they're combining the roles into one soon*).

Hate to break it to you, but RAF is just full of desk jobs unless you're a pilot or an engineer (or a meme Gunner, but you aren't going to get anywhere doing that role). Anything involving communications technology would be advantageous to moving to an air role.
>>
>>34829162
Alright, I really do appreciate the brutal honestly.

Right now I'm lined up for FOA, but after having seen in person what they do on that job, I've just been thrown by the constant admin and desk work.

What advantages does it give me if I chose to suck it up and do it for 3 years anyway?
I'm more interested right now in something like Paratroopers for 3 years then going back and trying for aircrew again.

Not to say I wouldn't do a communications technology job, if it gives me a huge advantage
>>
>>34827413
when the USMC deploys vs the army deploying the amount of logistical support, quality of bases, etc. is much lower. additionally as part of their culture almost they embrace extra suck to prove what badasses they are. shit like that. idk, i'm not a muhrine

>>34827521
i'm pretty sure recruiters won't give you useful answers to that sort of question, for once the internet is a better tool. they will pick whatever their #'s most want them to fill and tell you its the best

>>34827922
>>34827945
what about the upcoming AO-X stuff? if it even happens won't they want new pilots for that?
>>
>>34829185
It depends what you want to do in the long term. You say you want to try for aircrew again or move over to aircrew, but what do you actually want to do?
Paratroopers might be relevant experience if you want to be a Weapon Systems Operator, but it won't give you relevant qualifications or experience to move over to something like ATC. FOA would probably set you up better to move to ATC (if that's what you want).

You should also consider what you want to do with yourself after your career in the RAF ends or if you decide to end it early. Where is 20 years of experience as a Paratrooper going to take you in civilian life?
>>
>>34829263
Funny you say that because I DO want to do WSOp, that was what I was aiming for but I didn't pass my CBAT.

Actually everything you said is pretty relevant because WSOp and ATC were the career paths I was deciding between.
And after having been on a familiarisation visit and being in the ATC tower, I've been more swayed towards WSOp, even though I wouldn't say I disliked the experience.
Perhaps its age, but I can't see myself sitting behind a desk or control tower for the next 10 years of my life.

I am much more inclined to do paras if that lines me up for WSOp.

Although I feel like a dick because my interview is in a weeks time and I'd have to phone him up saying I'm no longer interested.
>>
>>34829326
Give your local office a call and arrange a talk about selecting your role. I assume you haven't locked yourself into FOA yet, and the upcoming interview is to just assess your suitability for the job?
>>
>>34829352
This is my initial interview, after passing the Airmen selection exam.

I'm already 4 months into the application process because the CBAT took up a large portion of it.

I'm a month into the application process for FOA.
Is it not too late to talk about it?
>>
>>34829373
I don't know, like I said, you should call your local branch about it. You're a good candidate and you've already been through most of the selection process, and they generally want you to be happy with what you're doing. There'd probably be a delay in the application process, but you have to do what you want to do, anon. There's no point doing FOA if you have no interest in it.
>>
>>34829396
Alright, I'll see what I can do. The thing is, ultimately I don't mind what I do for 3 years, as long as I can just land myself WSOp, then I'll he happy.

So I'll see what I can do! Thanks for the guidance.
>>
>>34829407
Tell them that WSOp is what you really want to do and they should be able to advise you as to what would be your best route.

Good luck, hope you manage to get what you want.
>>
>>34829418
I should add, I did say that after failing the CBAT and he advised me ASOp.
I spoke over it with a friend of mine who is actually working in ATC and he recommended me FOA.

Perhaps I should take a step back and look at ASOp.
I don't know if my recruiter is just tying to fill a space or actually giving me great advice.

That's kinda been my problem, everyone I speak to says something different and I have to try and guess who's advice to follow lol

Keep running, when I started C25K the 1 minute runs were tough. But I kept at it and now I've run 21 min twice. The second time I felt fine afterwards.

If you feel you need to do a certain stage a bit longer, do it. I did the 10-3-10 stage a few times before jumping to 21 minutes no intervals.

Around week 5 or 6 it'll tell you to make a big jump in your running length to 21 minutes, I think that chart is a bit out of order, but otherwise the program works.

I've been doing it on a treadmill though, so my pace has been 3mph walking and 6 running. I need to pick that up, desu.

>>
>>34831011

What I'm trying to do is go in on a Recon contract and make rank quickly, then go out for MARSOC when I hit E-4 or E-5 since I think Corporal counts as sufficient rank and the Recon pipeline overlaps with the MARSOC pipeline in parts. If I could get them both in during one enlistment that'd be balling.
>>
>>34831011
>>34831032
thats a pipedream and a dumb one. Youre way better off just taking an 18x or SEAL contract. So many things can go wrong while youre waiting for MARSOC. So many things. If youre going for gold go for it from day 1.
>>
>>34830993
Well, not as a primary objective, anyway. I know that all Marines are supposed to maintain a level of combat readiness, regardless of MOS, but I also don't want to spend my time just waiting for action and not doing anything to improve my skillset.

As for what I want to do after, I previously posted that here:
>>34823380
>>
>>34831048

Pft. I consider Recon to be on par with SEAL, and I'm comfortable doing the DA/SR thing for a while until I'm squared away enough to comfortable go for MARSOC.
>>
>>34831080
>I consider Recon to be on par with SEAL
Buddy youre 100% wrong. Look up their training pipelines. They arent even close. Not to mention as a SEAL youll advance and get payed more so much quicker you have no idea. PLus massive bonuses. IM telling you look it up buddy youll be so much happier going SEAL over the marine route for so many reasons.
>>
>>34831107

I've looked. The pipelines are roughly the same length unless you get flagged to do medical training, but in every SOF that extends the pipeline by about six months.
>>
>>34831144

>>
>>34831207
>The Navy's Mass Communication rate is apparently extremely difficult to get
Is is because its so small size wise because its basically unnecessary. IM telling you you need to branch out and try something different. This is your chance to find something else you love.
>>34831190
Avoid the marines interily for a bunch for reasons.
Seals are
Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School (8 weeks)
Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Training (24 weeks)
Parachute Jump School (3 weeks)
SEAL Qualification Training (SQT) (26 weeks)
SEAL Troop (TRP) Training
Then after you get to a team you can go to individual schools.
>>
>>34831243
Oh, that's what you were referring to. I'll definitely do that, then. Thank you very much!
>>
>>34831176

What I'm seeing on Recon is:

>Basic
>SOI
>MART or whatever they're calling that variation of selection now
>BRC
>Airborne
>Dive training

Total time averages about 11 months according to what I'm reading, but that doesn't include things like SERE school or Scout Sniper, whatever your unit wants to send you out to do from there.

What I'm seeing on SEALs is that it's just over a year but that's inclusive of SERE school.

It's the pattern that I see: Rangers, SEALs, Recon, and TACP have variations of the same sort of stuff just done a bit differently with different specializations. SF, CSO, CCT, PJ etc have other stuff on top of that basic set. That's why I'd rather do Recon to set myself up to transition to MARSOC.

If I weren't doing MARSOC it'd be CCT.
>>
>>34831080
There is zero reason to go MARSOC if you aren't already a marine. Save yourself 4 years of bullshit and get an 18x contract.
>>
>>34831313
this 100%
>>34831306
What you arent getting is a lot of recon training from what I can see is simsply out sourcing to other branches schools. Its not actually a selection pipeline so to speak.
Can you post the link you are reading this from?
And you keep talking about MARSOC meanwhile why?
You could just as easily go for team 6 or delta in the army but you are so focused on MARSOC.
>>
>>34831372

Right, but that's the case with pretty much everything. Every basic pipeline is more or less a copy of the other basic pipelines.

>link

I've had to track every scrap down from a million links mate. Do you know how long it took me to even find the acronym MART?

>MARSOC meanwhile why

Because I'm keen on FID with a HUMINT leaning towards it, and that is being flashed as a MARSOC specialty.

>CAG or Delta

That's more of a SEAL or Ranger thing since it's DA with a CT bent to it. I don't lean that way, I want to do some of that but get into HUMINT and FID on the way.
>>
>>34831432
Buddy your making the biggest mistake that all people liek you make.
Youre acting like you know what you want. The fact is you have no fucking clue what you want. How the hell do you know you like FID and HUMINT? You have no clue cause youve never even been close to doing it. Youre planning way to far ahead and assuming everything will work out just peachy for you.
If your mind is made up so be it but youre way better off not betting all your chips on this shit working out in the marines. Theres simply to many moving pieces and to many opportunities for something to go wrong.
>>
>>34831506

That's just fucking life in or out of the military mate. I could get hit by a drunk driver walking outside to pick up my mail, does that mean that I should start cooking dinner instead?

>you have no fucking clue what you want

Oh, that's cool dude. So I should, like, totes go Navy SEALs because I have no clue what I want even though it has the same DA/SR mission as Recon but provides no ability to funnel into something like HUMINT and FID. Because I have no clue what I want and having the option to transition is totally, like, a mistake when you don't know what you want.

Thats not what i meant and youre proving my point.
You arent in the military so you dont know how it works. You dont know how the politics work. You gotta realize the best time to ever get something is from day 1 and have it in your contract. Because after that its completely out of your hands. Lets say you want to go recon but its not in your contract, well guess what they are full so fuck you now you cant go or your unit is undermanned and needs you so fuck you you cant go or the lazy retard handling your paper work loses it so fuck you you cant go or maybe he just doesnt like you so fuck you he lsoes it on purpose and you cant go or maybe your LT. hates you and he denies you so fuck you you cant go. the amount of petty politics and difficulty you will go through just to file a damn leave chit is insane so good fucking luck trying to make a huge move like recon and marsoc once youre in.
>but provides no ability to funnel into something like HUMINT and FID
You dont know that at all.
>HUMINT and FID
Again you dont even know youd like that.

Mainly re-read what I wrote above. You truly cant appreciate how very easily you can get completely fucked over while in for no reason whatsoever. Paperwork gets """misplaced""" constantly and people get screwed. If you want to gamble and assume the stars will perfectly align for you be my guest but im the one whose actually been in and seen first hand how easily someone who has everything going for them can get boned over something so little as an officer doesnt like you so he denies your request for a school or anything similar along those lines.
