>swing wings
>high-lift devices so complicated they made the F-14 and A-5 look simple
>a double-jointed nose
>main gear drops down in front of inboard engines, so auxiliary top-mounted intakes need to be implemented

And the most fucky thing is that Boeing dropped the swing wing design a couple years in once it proved unworkable and acted like Lockheed was being unreasonable calling for a re-evaluation of the contract once Boeing started work on the 2707-300.

>>34807545
The aeroelasticity issues on the 2707-100 were far more complicated than those experienced by the XB-70. The 2707-100's long fuselage was the biggest problem, but the wings also had issues from what I've read.
The 2707-300 (pic related) was the closest thing they had to a practical design, and it's what they ended up going with until the contract was cancelled. Boeing even carried it on over to the HSCT program in the '90s. But the HSCT program found that, even if the 2707-300 design was realistic, it wasn't economically feasible.

Something with spanwise flow and high-alpha behavior, probably.
Fences and dogtooth notches prevent spanwise flow (air flowing from root to tip instead of straight back) and improve the lift distribution over the wing, and the dogtooth can create favorable vorticies to improve the performance of the wing at higher angles of attack.
As for why they did both, it was probably
>hey let's put a dogtooth on the wing to do this
>get to testing
>oh shit it's not working as well as we wanted
>add a fence
>problem solved
