Brits did well because of years of war with France and whilst maybe not coming out on top every time, had such a vast trade system that money was available to support and defend it. The germans had declared a total blockade of shipments since US and Britain kept smuggling military goods under false flag.

Normally german subs would surface near a vessel, send a price commando over, check the inventory and, if they found something, had the crew leave the ship and and sink it with their cannon. The british then started using Q-ships: Military vessels disguised as civilian ships that would lure a german sub to the surface to ambush it with their hidden weaponry. The germans then started to simply sink every ship with torpedoes.

In case of the lusitania the german ambassy in the USA actually put an advert in the papers that told anyone boarding the Lusitania was risking death.

When the sub hit the Lusitania, the sub's captain expected her to sink slowly, so the passengers could have escaped. However, since the ship was smuggling ammunition, a large secondary explosion ripped the ship apart, causing it to sink far too fast for an evacuation effort.

Our (NZ) contribution was a purely volunteer force, and was the first war in which we did not fight alongside the UK.
