In their cardboard boxes which are then inside modern ammo cans. I thought about buying surplus but figured the new manufacture ones might have an edge.

Semi related but how much ammo do you guys keep on hand (i.e. for shtf)?
>>
>>34790388
I bought a bunch of 50 Cal cans from PSA for $7.50 a piece, including shipping.

Inside those the ammo stays in the boxes it came in.

If you load your cans with a little autism, you can fit 1575 rounds of 5.56 into a 50 cal can

Put a layer of cardboard down one side to take up some slack space, and stack 3 rows of 525 rounds, with thing cardboard or cardstock between each layer.

50cal ammo cans. waterproof, cheap, easy to stack and organize.
the only thing that soothes muh tisms more is when i can arrange the ammo packages just right to take up atleast 98% of the available storage space. 20 round 7.62x39 seems to be the best in this regard
>tfw ammo can is holding almost max capacity

Several thousand rounds in ammo cans that I dont touch. A few thousand (combined) of every caliber I shoot just sitting in a closet that I use for shooting.

they do help. used up a couple of 8 or 9 year old 550 round bricks of federal22lr a month ago. the one that was stored outside had like 6-7 duds the brick that had been in a can only had one. they were next to each other in a closet.

They're cheap, durable, and waterproof. Anything else you have that's similar would also work.
>>
In magazines. Maybe a couple hundred more rounds in an empty protein powder tub.
That's in my range bag, at least. The rest is in the unopened cartons it originally came in, on top of my closet.
>>
>>34790388
I hand load, so typically in pieces. The only component I do anything special with is the primers, which are kept in a spare ammo can with a descant pack. The rest is typically separated and sorted into boxes or other containers. I keep the powder in jugs that it came in.

I typically keep 100 rounds loaded for any bolt action, 50 for any black powder gun and 200-250 loaded for any semi-auto at a time. These are either stored in clips/mags or in plastic ammo boxes for convenient range trips.

Came here to say this, and usually I have a bunch of the ones from federal that they sell that lake city surplus crap in stripper clips

Most of the ones I have wouldn't even be rain-resistant much less waterproof. The military is hard on shit.

Honestly nothing below 151 should be flammable. Feel free to douse yourself in 80 proof and play with matches just to be sure though.
>>
>>34797370
Those are ok, but they are a little bit flimsy when full of ammo.
>>
>>34790452
I tried the desiccant trick and just collected water inside the cans. I did it by making my own desiccant packs by buying a huge bag of it. I stopped putting desiccant in my ammo cans but I use it in my safe in a water catching bowl with desiccant grains above it. It works, I empty it once a month and fill it with new desiccant.
>>
>>34797420
I'm not him, but I believe they're designed to be waterproof for the first use, after that it can be anywhere from completely ruined to totally fine for years to store more surplus ammo
>>
>>34790388
Ammo cans, ordered a chair online the other day and it came with 2 big bags of dessicant, so I packed those into the 2 ammo cans I have. Plan on picking up more soon, but I just got a start so I think I'm doing okay
>>
>stashing ammo next to alcohol

>>
I don't see the need to hermetically seal the ammo as if it were food meant to ride you through the apocalypse. Ammo is a shelf-stable product, you see...
>>
>>34797623
How often did you check on the dessicant?
Where do you live? Sounds like you live in a very humid environment
>>
>>34797420
I bought some from costco and they were rain proof at least. I accidentally forgot them in the bed of my truck for about a week and it rained 4/6 days.

>>34790388
steel ammo cans. cardboard ammo cases tend to smell like an old sock after a year or so due to humidity in the air. Though, I've never actually had the rounds get tarnished or the cardboard boxes inside get ruined yet, so it's more of a cleanliness thing.
>>
>>34790984
That's what the smoke detector's for.
