Does anyone here still use 30-30?

I own a Savage 340, a bolt action rifle chambered in 30-30. Whenever I slide to the nearest Walmart/Bass Pro/Dick's, there's always a whole bunch of 30-30 on the shelves. Only other gun I've seen use this round other than mine are a few lever actions. Does nobody use this round anymore? Is it clearly inferior to .270 Win or .30-06?

I have a marlin 336 and a Winchester 94 in 30-30 as well as a Marlin 336 converted to 30-30 Ackley Improved.

.32WS is where it's at dawg.
>>
>>34788085
best cartridge ever made for durr hunting
>>
>>34788085
its a good round. pretty cheep to reload too
>>
>>34788085

Not a .30-30 owner, but I'm guessing it's because people use it for hunting, not target shooting, so they gather all they need for hunting season instead of buying it by the truckload for plinking (like with .223 .22LR, and 9x19mm).
>>
>>34788085
>always a whole bunch of 30-30 on the shelves
>Does nobody use this round anymore?

Backwards anon. All those types would not be on the shelves if nobody was buying. Rare cartridges are conspicuous by their absence.

I think it boils down to heritage (Grandad passed it to Dad who passed it to me). It's been surpassed over its 100+ year tenure but if the largest thing you're going after is whitetail it'll do you. I'm surprised it is as popular as it is but that's a good thing as far as I can tell.
>>
>>34788085
I have one, fun and fairly inexpensive full sized rifle cartridge. About the largest thing I would want to casually spend a few hours shooting into the dirt.
>>
Lets say hypothetically I was barely guns and a 30 30 marlin is my home defense weapon and also theres bears what kind of bullet is the most killy?
>>
>>34788171
A soft point hunting load.

It's a rifle bullet, it kills things dead.
>>
the 30/30 projectile has a rounded nose to keep a point off of the primer of the next round when loaded in a tube magazine like most lever guns use.
If you are not using a tube magazine, you don't need the 30/30 round
>>
I use it out of my Winchester 94

IDK I like it, does what it's supposed to.
>>
>>34788192
lets say the bears have ballistic shields and theres a lot of heavy cover around my property and magneto will affect the bullets trajectory if they don't move fast enough and the bears regenerate if the wound cavity isn't large enough.
>>
>>34788171
>.30-30
>bears
If it's black bears then just go with a bonded deer hunting soft point like Federal Fusion

.308 Federal Fusion is rebranded as Speer Gold Dot Rifle for police snipers so the .30-30 will do the trick for home defense.
>>
>Worse ballistics than two-fuddy-three

Why use it?
>>
>>34788085
Super common for level actions. God knows how many Winchester 1894's in 30-30 are out there.

Also if anyone is reading this thinking "hey, a 30-30 Winchester could be fun", they're not really. Super over-rated, terrible factory sights and awful triggers.
>>
>>34788085
A lot of guys in my neck of the woods still use them, either in semi-automatic or lever-action. Not really my thing, but different strokes for different folks.
>>
>>34788085

I own one but haven't shot it in probably 10 years. Most people use it for deer. A box of 20 rounds will last them a decade because they're not the type to shoot recreationally.

I got a 45-70 instead, way more fun to shoot.
>>
>>34788085
It's a popular hunting cartridge, but /k/ isn't full of hunters (as opposed to mall ninjas prepping for the RAHOWA, of which there is an endless supply around here).

It's fine for home defense. Pic related.
>>
>>34788085
very popular in lever guns
>>
>>34788085
>Does nobody use this round anymore?
If I'm hunting in thick brush where I know my furthest shot is 50 I grab my 336. It's a handy rifle.
>>
>>34788085
Modern fudds don't use it much anymore because even though most of them hunt at under 75 yards, they think they will need a cartridge like .270 just in case they see a deer 300 yards away, even though most of them can't hit accurately at that range. Also, many fudds seem to think that .30-30 isn't accurate past 50 yards.

I really like it because my first gun was a 94 and it's the gun I shoot best with. Also, ammo is nice and cheap.
>>
>>34788244
In that case you should go ask reddit
>>
>>34788422
Semi auto 30-30? Do they actually make those?
>>
>>34788085
I don't use it, but I have one.

It has about 1/3 less energy than .270 or .30-06, and the shouldered rimmed design limits it mostly to leverguns. The SP rounds destabilize after about 200 yards, but the newer Hornady polymer tip rounds help for longer distances. It's fine for killing deer or pigs or 2 liter bottles.
>>
>>34788821
A Remington Model 8 or 81 in .30 Remington is ballistically a twin to .30-30
>>
>>34788085
I own two. One a winchester 94 I bought when I was 18 and just became a hasguns. The other is my grandpa's old marlin. He polished the action on that and it is basically butter to run on the range. I personally use them as ranch rifles when my boss is around as he is a major fudd and hates AR patterned rifles.

>>34788824
>muh 200 yard shot
biggest hunting meme in history. 90% of hunting takes place sub-200 yards and is irrelevant when choosing caliber and gun.
>>
Yeah I use 30 WCF. Shits fun, love my Winchester 94's
>>
>>34788085
No because I'm not a fudd
>>
>>34788249
Also Hardcast

>>
>>34788842
Fair point, but finding .30 Remington is a bit of a pain. Rather have one in .35.
>>
>>34788962
if your state has more than 500 people in it, you probably cant hunt bambi with a rifle anyway.
>>
>>34788121
No man .35 Remington is the best!
>>
>>34788121
My uncle is sitting on one that he won't give to go huntin with because he became a vegetarian. He probably doesn't know where it is desu.

Anyway, I have a big boy job now and decided to just get a Henry Long Ranger in 308 (w/sights). Better cartridge, same cost at all my local retailers.
>>
>>34788171
Lever-action carbines are probably one of the better HD rifle options. AR-15 would technically be better, but the key things are short over-all length and a fast action which a lever carbine has.
>>
>>34788739
What do you have to gain by just making shit up
>>
>>34788085
No because 270 Winchester is a thing.
>>
>>34790093

>>
>>34788085
its very popular for lever actions but not much anymore outside that part of the gun market. most the kids here are poorfags w/ milsurp garbage or tacticool LARPers so i'm not surprised people here don't know about 30-30

Who the fuck died and left you in charge of wants and needs?
>>
>>34788085

only levergun I ever used was a 30-30

fun stuff
>>
>>34788244
Shoot the ground at their feet. They fall in the hole and lose their shields. Shoot them in the nose.
>>
>>34788962

My first deer was taken at well over 200m.

Eastern hardwood forest isn't the only habitat you can chase deer in you know.
