What non-magnified optic should I get for a .556 16 inch barreled AR-15? What's a reasonable price for both iron sights and red dot sights? What brands should I avoid or seek out?

Buy an Aimpoint PRO
/Thread.

Also, should I worry about battery life on a red dot, or is it so long that it isn't an issue?

No you'll be fine with an Aimpoint Pr0
>>
>>34786949
Depends on what optic you buy.
Those shitty chink red dots will use up a battery in a week if you forget to turn it off.

A proper Aimpoint as a battery life somewhere around 5 years with the optic on a medium brightness setting. You can literally leave it on for years on end. Just change out the battery for a good quality battery every 2 years or so and you'll be fine.

Buy a Vortex red dot. Their a good middle ground between cost and quality. Skip irons completely.

What do you guys think about See All sights? They're a middle ground between red dots and irons.

Seriously, you won't regret investing in good optics, they last forever and even if you sell the gun you originally bought them for, you can always found some other gun they'll work well on.

A semi-Decent choice for "combat" shotguns, they're shit for everything else.
