Be it actual military manuals, or books witten by high-rankings of the army.
Read strategy. It's far more interesting and you'll get a real appreciation of what's at hand.
Reading about tactics without the structure of training is pointless, it's like reading instruction manuals without having the object in front of you.
I'm not sure about this one, but I did read a good chunk of 33 Strategies of War by Robert Greene. It was a decent read.

Sorry, came just here to take a look at the blondie.
The art of war, FM 7-8, any military nonfiction

sun tzu its a quick read,
read as much mil history as possible, especially from the losers perspective.
ceaser's letters are boring i've heard, but contain very good information.
basically look up any general after Thucydides whose works survived and it wont be a complete waste of time.
I liked Militant Tricks by Poole. He has done a few great books on asymmetric warfare tactics (more specifically, how to avoid the enemy using them on you)
>>34784855
On War by Clausewitz
>>34784855
As in "muh survival tactics"? Light infantry tactics. Ranger handbooks. Sniper & counter-sniper. Fieldcraft, Engineering. Check the FMs.
Disregard what >>34784865 said. There exists a reading list for the Australian Army on military strategy, it contains a good historical view on war and strategies. There's also academic papers collected into books that serve for the education of US officers and deal with all kinds of related incidents, such as urban warfare, etc.

Decent book, movie overemphasized the cuck aspect, and both could have done without the moralistic ending

Decent, but Machavelli was better
I recommend the Hagakure. After that you don't need to read anything else, but Infantry Attacks is a nice read.

It's not "how to tactics", but it's a relevant curated list.

And a non-curated list full of incredibly useful works from the same source:

Strategy / BH Liddell Hart
Influence of Sea Power / Mahan
Art of War / Sun Tzu
On War / Clausewitz
Infantry Attacks / Rommel
Devil of a Whipping / Babits
Last one is really, really good. If you want to see an individual engagement broken down one piece at a time, Babits does it beautifully. Also Cowpens is a ridiculous American victory so it's fun to read about.
I remember The Road to Guilford Courthouse being good as a campaign analysis, but its been forever since I read it (college). The Revolutionary War's southern theater is neat for the intersection of strategy and tactics in general.
Basically anything in-depth on Napoleon. Little fucker was amazing.
Not unit tactics or grand strategy per se but I just finished Sniping in France by Hesketh-Prichard and it's a wonderful little book. He skips nuts and bolts stuff occasionally (I wish he'd laid out lesson plans at First Army's school, etc) but he sets out to describe how he reversed a capability overmatch from an administrative perspective and accomplishes that without any ego at all, plus he is super easy to read on top of it. You'd never know he was an elite cricketer who just happened to also singlehandedly set the tempo for Allied sniper instruction during WWI. Killer read and fairly short.

>Art of War
Is there anything in there that isn't obvious when it's not dressed up in spooky language? Take the enemy by surprise. Attack him when he's tired and you're not. Know the capabilities of your own forces, as well as the enemy's. Fight if you're certain you're gonna win. Don't fight if you don't have to. Etc.
>>34788444
>ender's game
I was getting at the fact that EG is on the mandated reading list for the USMC.
And when you think about it, it's a manual on how to mindfuck people into being good officers.
>>34794009
>>Ender's Game
>Typical YA shit
wew, lad. So edgy. Ender's game is a book about creating the perfect officer, it has nothing to do with the YA bullshit that is prominent of late. Even with the movie and people calling it Harry Potter in space. Yeah, it's "Harry Potter and the Strategic Genocide". Let's sum up:
>main character was bred for just the right amount of intelligence, and aggression
>his ticket to the school was stomping a kid's brains out to put the fear of god into his buddies and not have to deal with future challenges
>the plot is about having him come up with his own solutions, and never once rely on someone higher up to bail him out.
>the bugs (aka commies/mudslimes/etc) are physically incapable of communicating with the civilised world, so the solution is to kill them all, to prevent any future wars
>the kid is tricked into thinking it's all a game, so his decisions are not weighed down by concience, just pure win-lose calculation.
Yep, YA shit as usual. (asside from all the naked 6 year olds, and hillarious jabs at Jews, and the Warsaw Pact/Soviet Union).
I think not.

Why didn't you just read these books before commenting about them?
Roger Trinquier's book on modern warfare, and JFC Fuller's Conduct of War (among others) spring to mind. Both should be available online, either libgen or archive.org

Excessive violence, cynicism and overall edginess are not alien thing to YA. You just not accustomed with dark part of its scene. Like Hunger Games or Mortal Engines.
