I know it says "long rifle" but it also gets shot out of pistols. 223 Remington can be used in non-Remingtons, and 7.62x51 NATO can be fired in guns chambered for commercial .308.

id consider it a pistol round since its mostly straight walled and doesnt have a point at which is tapers aggressively like .223 or .308 or whatever but it's actually used in rifles almost exclusively with the sole exceptions of competition shooters and fallout new vegas autists so it's best to compare it to other rifle rounds of similar size/usage

sorta like how 5.7 is basically a rifle round, owing to its overall shape, rather than being a pistol round by grace of being used exclusively in a pistol and submachinegun
