Western weapons were designed around the concept of bludgeoning, since heavy steel and mail armor were widely utilized, and as such, weapons including swords needed to be heavy enough to inflict damage. Katanas were different, since samurai armor was mainly bamboo and leather crafted in a scale pattern, and as such, the idea of slicing and stabbing was more widely incorporated into the style of sword, thus making it significantly more fragile as a bludgeoning weapon.
