You should totally learn how to field strip guns at the range with their rentals, that way if you fuck up really bad you can just drop the parts on the counter and leave.

There are these magical books of knowledge called "Manuals". When you read them either as a book, or as words on a screen, they grant you the mystical knowledge of how your firearms works. The only downside is that you have to be literate (or at least understand pictures), and have about 15 minutes free.
