Are side saddles a "you get what you pay for" thing or is it a normal thing to cheap out on? They seem oddly expensive for what they are.

most of the time yes. there are some cheap as shit ones that crap out after normal use. i tend to like the velcro and elastic ones.

I have one of those TacStar and it's worked fine. Not fancy, but it wasn't $80 like the Mesa ones are.
I do like the Mesa ones being lower profile however.

I have a 7-round velcro side saddle for my Benelli M2 made by Esstac. Very nice for $15.

I'd recommend to go with a soft side saddle. I use SOE shotgun cards

Those tac stars are fine for 870's. They fit well, but you should lock tight the screws anyway. Mine has held up just fine.
