Are these fuckers worth the extra 100-200 dollars? Trying to take my rifle home for Christmas so that my nogunz family can shoot it and I need something that won't get broken by the retards working at TSA. Every Plano or other generic brand I've looked up always has this comment:
>Well it's an alright case but it's not as durable as MUH PELICAN

Anyone that has flown with their firearms want to give an opinion?

General case/holster thread as well.

Is your rifle worth several thousand dollars? Yes.
Otherwise plano is absolutely fine.
>>
>>34768540
Sig Sauer P16 Patrol. Mid-grade rifle I guess.
>>
>>34768546
Goddamn I need sleep.
>Sig Sauer 516 Patrol
>>
>>34768546
Don't even worry about it my dude. Plano is fine.
>>
You could just wrap your pelican case in plastic wrap like a lot of people do with their luggage. The TSA isn't allowed to open firearms cases so I imagine it shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>34768562
Meant to say plano
>>
>>34768525
Depends if you fly with your rifle. That's really all.

If you fly with your rifle and you want it to survive, get a pelican.

If not, get a Plano.
>>
>>34768525
Yes.

However, I picked up a 1750 which is a little large for what I need. I would rather get a 1720. Until I can afford to repurchase I will continue to use my Plano Gun Guard cases for trips to the range.

If I was going to fly, I would definitely reach for the Pelican.
>>
>>34768525
A good halfway is a Plano, and getting better foam. I think at least one company makes perfectly sized ones for Plano cases, but it's more expensive that shaping it yourself. The only difference would be how good it looks. I've never done it, but watched a guide on YT, so I'm sure if you aren't retarded you can shape it pretty well.
>>
>>34768677
I would happily buy another foam set for my Plano case except the bastards glued the egg carton foam to the top and bottom of the case
>>
>>34768956
I'm sure you could rip it out easy enough, I don't think it will matter if it looks kinda shitty since you'll cover it up with new foam.
>>
I have a pelican, however it's an iM3300 hardigg storm, so it was produced by hardigg before they were bought out by pelican.
The plastic is much more rigid and thicker than plano, but it's also much heavier. I guess overall the quality is much better than a plano, but I'm not tossing the case around. My bolt action is only ~$2,400 including the optic and I bought the case for $240, 10% to protect my rifle wasn't a big deal to me.

If you fly a lot, get the pelican, if not, then just whatever plano is TSA approved.
>>
>>34768525
I got the plano all weather tactical case, its just over 100 dollars with pick and pluck foam inside. Locking clamps and it has 2 holes for padlocks on it. Best case I have.
>>
>>34768525
You get what you pay for. Pelican is the gold standard
>>
Getting a lot of mixed reviews here. Has anyone actually flown with a rifle in their checked luggage before?
>>
>>34769527
Patriot nurse has a few decent videos up about flying with firearms.
>>
>>34768525
Make sure you don't leave the glass in there or it will disappear.
>>
>>34769566
Orly?
>>
>>34769527
yeah. I usually carry pistols and put them into a regular carry on

if you don't like flying with a long pelican like pictured you can try putting it into a jumbo large duffel bag or something.

but typically when they're guns they get very particular in making sure it makes it there. I've heard of camera guys putting a small starter pistol in their camera gear pelicans just to make sure they're securely locked, opened only by TSA supervisors if they have to (or likely, not at all), and pretty much watched like a hawk through transit.
>>
>>34768525

The TSA retards will still find a way to break it.

Yeah, because you're going to be able to decontaminate the foam, right?
>>
>>34769566
Explain.
>>
>>34769786
The foam is removable and replaceable.

The foam gets thrown out every time its in containment and needs cleared because the material for one attracts particles and is porous so it absorbs particles.

Us has strick af regs on nuke.

Cheeky germans fucking drink beer at work and kayak in there spent fuel pools.

Us has weird release laws.

Tecnically if you bring a slowcooker on site to make something you run the risk of the materials inside the cooler setting off the release portal.

Interstate theft of a firearm is a serious deal. The airlines move heaven and Earth to find d your gun if it goes missing.
>>
They're not worth the money but neither was the gun you spent $2000 on, and almost nobody else makes really good hard cases for rifles. It's just an ocean of cheap plastic or premium overpriced shit.

>>
>>34769964
The Banana is actually the omni-unit of measurement. Clonal agriculture has made every banana virtually identical.

1 Banana's worth of activity from K-40
1 Banana's mass
1 Banana's volumen
1 Banana's length
1 Banana's energy content

I fly quite a bit with my rifle, I recommend going with the pelican because its way thicker than the Plano options and in my opinion worth the extra money. I found this DPMS branded one for around $115 on eBay and have flown with this specific one 6 times and have had no issues.
>>
>>34768575
Nice
>>
>>34768525

For you guys with quite a few guns, what do you usually carry your shit to the range with? Just soft cases, tight? The only hard cases I own are either factory or the one that came with my meatball. I just think they are overkill, even of $14k FA guns. My trunk is not exactly an adverse environment.

Do you have a $4000+ rifle? Do you fly with said rifle twice a month?

No?

The Plano all-weather is good enough for you. It's beefy enough to survive the trip but probably not robust enough to survive a lifetime. Then again it's like 1/3 the price.

You gotta keep in mind that the fellows working baggage handling aren't very well developed - They've more or less only just now come down from the trees. They WILL be able to ruin everything, including muh Pelicase if it's unwieldy/heavy enough to annoy them.
That said, I know people who have traveled to Africa to hunt, and they've brought their guns in Plano cases without any issues.
That said, I'm with >>34768995 on getting a Pelican if you'll be flying a lot.

>>34769527

It worked well enough, but I brought my scope in my carry-on, just in case.

>>34771187
>>34772463
ya know I was wondering...
I live in a fairly urban area, and so I usually use public transit to go to the range (its free, b/c lol university tickets).
If I took one of those cases and plastered it with music stickers (yamaha, fender, some bands, etc) would that be a sneaky way of carrying a rifle? as in, the nogunz don't freak out?
>>
They're not worth it, considering you sound like you own some shitty rifle like a delton, who cares if it gets stolen.

Leave the pelican to others that actually value their belongings, you already sound like you made up your mind.
>>
>>34768525
TSAfag here. It's not us who usually breaks shit, normally it's the guys who the airlines themselves employ because it's a minimum wage job available to former convicts among others.
>>
>>34771441
My long range gun is too long for the softcases i have or been able to find. But it fits into my 1770 pelican.

Inside the 1770 i can fit my rifle, optic, range finder, spotting scope, cleaning kit and dewey rod, along with 500rds of ammo.

it's sometimes cheaper to ship rifles to yourself instead of paying for oversized luggage.

When shipping rifles/shotguns from yourself to yourself, it has to be USPS with signature conformation. No FFL needed.

Just did this yesterday with three rifles, was 35 bucks in total. And entirely legal
