you mean our clone of it, the AR-18? Because by that point the military waned a .223 round not a .308 caliber round

Because it doesn't fit well with US military doctrine that utilizes squad machine guns providing suppressive fire while riflemen maneuver and utilize aimed semi auto fire to eliminate the enemy.
AR family of weapons: Precisely made, accurate, utilized modern materials and manufacturing techniques, generally utilized as a semi auto rifle for aimed fire, secondary function as a full auto for suppressing fire, hence the safety selector goes from semi then to auto or burst.

AK family of weapons: Robust stamped steel and wood construction, loose tolerances make for reliable weapons but accuracy suffers, cheap and easy to manufacture with minimal machine work involved. Designed as an assault weapon first, secondary function as a semi auto rifle for aimed fire, hence the safety selector goes from safe to full, then to semi auto.
