Muzzle flash is clearly coming out of the magazine. In the next issue, there are two muzzle flashes coming out of the barrel and magazine of a SPAS 12.

It is pretty common way to show recoil on single static image. Note top right and bottom right frame, and to lesser extent bottom left one.
